Your top five Ipswich goalkeepers 07:45 - Jul 4 with 5580 viewsChurchman

This is purely on a ‘playground pick’ basis in order, not on stats, divisions etc.

1. Richard Wright
2. Kelvin Davis
3. Bartosz Bialkowski
4. Paul Cooper
5. Craig Forrest (he was kind to my mum too - in Sainsburys getting a box of cornflakes down from the top shelf!)

Need to mention Mike Pollitt surely?

Ok, only one game played but still...

One game is plenty! (especially given what game it was...)

Pat Jennings has more international caps than any other Everton player, despite never having played a single game for Everton! (they signed him as cover for the '86 cup final when big Nev was injured. Mimms played. Liverpool won).

Ken Hancock was a very good keeper for Town in the 60s IMO.

Was he consistent for a whole 90 mins, or the sort that would just have a good half hour in him?

We all agree:
...Hancock is better than Yashin

But who was better than E-U-S-E-B-I-O, and we all know who were "in for a thrashing"

And David Best for Number One

ALB has about the best stats ever for a Town keeper so not sure why so many seem to have a downer on him!

I didn't rate him highly and was pleased when we brought in David Best. A big upgrade IMO.

Roy Bailey and David Best have to be in the top five.

As regards the other end Jim Thorburn was worse than Andy Marshall but only just.

Strange how football evolves - great in the 70s and 80s but probably wouldn’t be a professional keeper nowadays as too short.

It's especially strange given how (1) modern football relies on the footballing abilities of a keeper (which has no correlation with size, or if anything, a negative correlation), (2) modern football is said to have moved on from hoofing great big crosses into the box (where of course size would have assisted a keeper), and (3) attacking players would have got away with a lot more rough and tumble back in the old days, again giving a big strong keeper a potential advantage.

1. Should be no doubt Paul Cooper. Despite size extremely athletic and a very solid all round keeper. Would do ok nowadays playing out from the back as was tidy with feet.
2. Richard Wright
3. Kelvin Davis
4. Bart
5. Craig Forrest

just outside
Best, Sivell, Walton, Fulop, Alexander (though we only had him briefly, was brilliant during that time)

If we're talking loan keepers, there's also David Stockdale. Just released by York City this year.

That's kind of where I'm at on it.

I also really rated Alexander, as thought we'd just got the keeper position sorted with a safe pair of hands when next thing we knew he was off up to Rangers.

Did you know Yashin came to Ipswich? Was part of the Dynamo Moscow party which came over for Beat's testimonial.

When the BBC did an interview with him he had an Ipswich pennant up but wasn't sure where it was from

I liked Jon Hallworth. I had to give up playing outfield because of my asthma and I wrote to him as a 9 year old and he sent me a really nice hand-written few page letter giving me tips and training advice.

He's one of the great forgotten Town players who nobody ever mentions or talks about.
