Southgate to carry on after Euro 24? 22:49 - Jul 10 with 3621 viewsVic

A couple of weeks ago no one gave him any chance of being in post for long after the tournament. But what now? However you cut it he's been successful in terms of tournament achievement - head and shoulders above any other England manager.

His football might not be the best, but he does what he's employed to do - go deep into tournaments. Going to be a tough decision I think - and if he stays I don't think he's got much credit in the bank going forward.

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

Depends.

If he beats Spain then yes

But otherwise for me he's just been incredibly lucky with the sides we've faced.

I'm rooting for us Sunday. But can see Spain winning by 3 or 4 goals tbh.

If England win the Euros then he should go out on a high.

If England lose the Euros the he should go as failed to win a tournament again.

Can anyone honestly go through another tournament in two years watching England play with Southgate's tactics?

I think he probably leaves, and will do so with his head held high. He was close to going after the World Cup so I would’ve thought he would call it a day next week.

Big boots to fill though, he’s certainly delivered results if not always the best football.

Do I think he should be sacked? No

Do I think he should bow out, even if we win? Yes

Do I think he deserves more time? Also probably yes

The thing is, next tournament and we're going to be having the same conversations if he stays.

As Ipswich fans, we should know all about this. BCWYWF and all that

He will leave after the Euro's irrelevant if we win or lose. Like all managers he has a use by date.

But getting to the final of a tournament on foreign soil should be celebrated, no other England mgr has had the ability to get England to that position

I think we have to stick with him for a while longer. With lots of quality younger players coming into the fold at the same time it could be a disaster if we go back to a string of poor coaches.

Also, there is the question of who...

I suspect Howe is one. I don't rate Dyche as a success bringer, he's more of a survival specialist. Klopp would be a good pick but I doubt he'd take on the role.

I don't get his appeal at all... he's really not done anything but is a name that keeps floating up to the top

I'd be quite happy with him

Establishing Brighton in the premier league and a 9th place finish is definitely an achievement. Even if it doesn't come with a trophy

I definitely don't think England would be as dull to watch under him

Possibly, but he's not really shown a taste for longevity at those clubs. I certainly wouldn't think he's an upgrade on Southgate. Even if Southgate is scaping by, he's delivering the best progress of any England manager since before I was born

The big question is who would play Southgate in a Carry On film ?

I can see Jim Dale as Harry Kane, Kenneth Connor as Trippier and Sid James as Pickford, but who would have the quietly pissed off but carrying on qualities for Southgate ? Bernard Bresslaw ?

He’s one game left. Thank God.
However the door will be left open for a return, once he’s won all their is too win at Real Madrid….

It's just that the bar is so low when compared to Sirs Bobby and Alf. Lucky manager with the talent at his disposal and the various weaker teams in qualifying and tournament draws.

In his club management he is a huge upgrade on Southgate. However managing a nation and a club are so different.

We won’t know wether he over or under performed until the next guy is in post.

The only Muff in Town.

Noooooooooo!
He should leave if we win and certainly leave if we lose.
Give himself, supporters, and players a break from his poor team selections, poor coaching, negativity, relying
on individual moments of brilliance from players often substitutes to get him out of a hole of his own making. Any half decent manager in charge for the last 8 years could have been on the brink of winning a 4th title in style. The PL is the best in the world we should be on the front foot and have a winning mentality not riding our luck and wetting ourselves because we reach a QF
SF or final. England are not Norwich who reminisce about reaching a SF! Although who knows GS may end up at Norwich his true level? I hope we beat Spain but it will be in spite of GS let's hope he doesn't dig a hole too deep for the players to recover from on Sunday.

I think Howe's already ruled himself out.

100% leaving. He's been quite upset by it all I think and needs a break.

Quite frankly I think his management this tournament has been poor at times. Coaching and tactics and his inability to be proactive or quick to make changes hasn't been good. However what he has been consistently superb with is making us mentality monsters. Team unity and mental strength has been first class. That and the natural ability he has in the squad has got us to two finals and a semi.

For the above he deserves credit and we made our own luck and have grown. He goes down as a very successful manager for England with lots of thanks from me. But I don't think he is a brilliant manager. He's a very good man and a leader of people.

Tournament football is just about getting through each game. Southgate gets this. The only thing that matters is getting through, which he has done. Think he goes after the final, but it will be his choice and I thank him for all that he has given and the pride we have back in our national side. Bring it home Gareth.

If we somehow beat this Spain team on Sunday he probably has the right to call it himself. That said, a world cup in 2 years!

I know that was then, but it could be again..

100% time to go. Leave on a high etc

I can’t watch another tournament with having average lads like Tripps playing every game at left back. Not playing Palmer more, or Gordon hardly at all.

Cracking record, but time to move on.
