Yes, they’re always odd but they’re not always crap. Danny Boyle’s London 2012 was a masterpiece. There were a couple of things I didn’t really get but overall it was amazing - especially the Industrial Revolution section. We were given tickets for the final dress rehearsal and I went along fearing the worst. I wasn’t sure what was going on at first and then that drumming started. Tv cannot convey how powerful it was. You could feel it through your feet and seat. Sensory hit factor 10. Then the rings were formed and that was the iconic moment. One of the rings in practice didn’t go off quite right but it was corrected by the Friday. The practice that went into it all and the detail was extraordinary - tv was never going to capture it all. It was a privilege to witness it. Some bits were cut for the dress rehearsal - the helicopter came over but there was no indication of the James Bond element or that Rowan Atkinson was playing Mr Bean to the Chariots of Fire music. Ed Sheeran did the warm up before the dress rehearsal started. I thought ‘dunno who the ginger bloke is, but he’s quite good if you like that sort of thing‘’can’t see him doing much in the music business’ thought I. That went well.

Hmm. Maybe in certain points. I found it overly self-indulgent and unnecessarily long. The French are probably loving theirs, much as a lot of Brits seemed to enjoy ours. The main criticism with the French one tonight seems to be people didn’t understand it, which isn’t surprising. You probably need to be French to enjoy it. Ours would have looked really weird and quirky to non-Brits.

The Olympics opening ceremony is weird and proper sh!te!!!! on 19:34 - Jul 26 by ArnoldMoorhen | I hope the producers of Assassin's Creed are getting royalties for this blatant rip off. Mind you, after what happened with Notre Dame, you'd think they would shy away from having someone running around with a naked flame on the rooves of their most historic buildings! And as for having a "mysterious masked figure" carrying the flame, so that they can do a "Wow! What a twist! It was Brigitte Bardot all along!" Scooby Doo reveal at the end... |
Parents everywhere probably tearing their hair out at all their “don’t get into any vehicle with a stranger” training going down the swanee. Thought the whole thing very derivative of 2012 but a poor imitation - bitty, lacked focus, and too drawn out. Even the music was mostly dull. Best bit was the Notre Dame original music and dance. Should maybe have centred it around the Eiffel Tower, spectacular focal point for the last section. The flame was great though - just a shame it took them 4 hours to get there.

The Olympics opening ceremony is weird and proper sh!te!!!! on 23:15 - Jul 26 with 2737 views | WicklowBlue | I agree the boat thing wasn't great at all, while the mechanical horse and rider looked cool for a minute or two after that I was waiting for a dragon. However that light show on the Eiffel tower was amazing and I had to ask my better half who was singing...Celine Dion???? Agree there was some naff bits but equally some great stuff too. I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering can they keep that balloon flying over the next 2 weeks plus.
The Olympics opening ceremony is weird and proper sh!te!!!! on 08:39 - Jul 27 with 2513 views | wischip | There was a great early section where they were forging the medals and the music was very reminiscent of Underworld's at London 2012. Exactly. I remember during the closing ceremony of 2012 that the rest of the world would be wondering why on earth Batman and Robin have emerged from a yellow three wheeled van. Although Only Fools and Horses was huge here, it was never known worldwide like say, Doctor Who is.

That was in the Notre Dame section I referred to; I also thought that section the best. The music was an original composition based on the actual sounds of the tools of the tradespeople as they worked on the restoration. [Post edited 27 Jul 2024 9:58]

Yes that's the section, started with the builders hitting stuff in the Notre Dame scaffolding. It went under the title "Synchronicity". It reminded me an awful lot of the Danny Boyle/Underworld part in London when they were forging the rings, but this time forging the medals. I was convinced it was Underworld again but after a long search it seems to be music by Victor Le Masne.

The Olympics opening ceremony is weird and proper sh!te!!!! on 12:50 - Jul 29 with 1986 views | DJR | I'm a bit late to this but I imagine the French were just as non-plussed about our opening ceremony, which concerned British culture and history, as British people were about a ceremony concerning French culture and history. Of course, it is possible to have an opening ceremony which is devoid of cultural references, and instead goes for the spectacular, but I for one liked the ambition and difference of the French ceremony. And it seemed to go down well with the French. [Post edited 29 Jul 2024 12:50]

i only saw it from the horse on the river bit, but thought it was very slow paced and dull. What I saw also suffered from a lack the energy of 80,000 people in a stadium. The caldron was good, but again ponderous. Celine up the Eiffel was alrightish. 4/10

Irrespective of the cultural/historical elements, it was still very bitty, unfocussed and boring, with (mostly, not all) exceptionally dull music that sounded like generic background film music; and dancing that looked under-rehearsed. Even the can-can lacked impact - regularly see better on 'Strictly'.
