Very sad news, one of my favourite players. Remember his debut century very well.

yeah fond memories of him being one of the few to stand up to Australia on a fairly consistent basis.

He wasn't treated particularly well by England selectors in the early years either if i recall correctly.

Very sad indeed. He was a cracking batsman, very eloquent and a staple of the England and Wales team for years. Used to love watching him bat as you know he would give it his all. One of the best batsmen of his era

55 out. RIP.

Thorpe was bizarrely dropped by new England "supremo" Ray Illingworth in 1994 as part of wholesale changes, despite an impressive start to his Test career. His replacement was Yorkshire all-rounder Craig White!

That's a shock this morning, so sad to go so young. His century in Colombo was one that sticks in the mind.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

A lovely cricketer.

A mention for Warney on that clip too. It's been a tough couple of years with a few players going early. Symmonds is another one. Rodney Marsh also passed in 2002. And of course Frank Duckworth had his targets ultimately reset earlier in the summer.

RIP.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Terribly sad news. What a terrifically good batsmen he was during the 90s and early 2000s, one of the few bright sparks of that England era. It’s news like this that makes you realise life is precious and also short. RIP Thorpey.

Blessed with some absolute great lefties during those years but Thorpe was always one of my favs.

Gone too soon but rest well my friend.

Great player, and very tough. RIP.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I joined Surrey CCC as a member in 1988, the year Chalky made his debut.

It was quite evident from very early on that we were witnessing the emergence of a special talent.

I have lost count of the number of crucial, significant and hugely entertaining innings he played, both for County and Country, in the days when England internationals played a full season for their county.

Met him several times as in those days the Surrey players would join supporters after games in the much missed Surrey Tavern, very approachable and likeable man.

As a long standing Surrey Supporter, this is my saddest day since the tragic loss of Tom Maynard and before that Ben Hollioake.

Sad day, gone much too soon. RIP Chalky and thanks for the memories.

I used to love watching him and Hussain getting a good partnership going for England, always fun to watch his style, very calm, and composed.

I didn't realise he finished up the summer we won the 2005 Ashes after losing his spot in THAT team,I am not sure who he lost his place to without checking.
Always was a fan of his and thought he was quite dashing.
Knew he had been ill, didn't know he was so young.

Kevin Pietersen, was a big decision to drop GT for KP ahead of the series. Was one of the big talking points going into the tests.

Cheers,I was living ouside the country in the buildup to that series and experienced 3 days of huge things ..London getting the olympics on the 6th,7-7 and married on the 8th and was still outside the country for the 1st test so missed a lot of the narrative leading up....oddly I do remember the Aussies being done by the Bangladeshis in a one dayer whilst not back at home still

Sorry Phil didn't see you'd posted this when I posted mine, great, great player. Have is autograph on my wall at home.

Cool, calm classy. He and Nasser really vital for an otherwise fairly average England team

Pietersen came in for that series but in that line up, Bell should really have made way for Thorpe. He came good later in his career but Bell was a rabbit in the headlights in that Ashes.

Loved watching Thorpe. He was a bit like Root coming in with England in trouble, and 9 times out of 10 would get us out of it.

I was thinking that earlier, but I think Bell was seen as someone for the future and that Thorpe's day had passed.

Also saw a photo of him and Nasser walking off victorious in the dark in Pakistan, which was a brilliant win.

Yes I think it may have been T20 actually Phil.. very early days of international T20 if it was the case …, that Pakistan win was a real special moment… iirc it kind of continued Englands redemption as a good side once again which culminated in the ashes GT was dropped for…. Sport eh .. a cruel mistress

Class player in a series of otherwise pretty rubbish England teams. Saw him play many times. RIP Thorpey

I remember that well, I was there...
Well, to be honest I was there in Perth on Day four to see Greg Blewett get a century and then watch McGrath and McDermott skittle the top order to be 5 down at the end of play with less than 30 on the board and Thorpe out first ball after having reached his century the day before.
It remains the only Ashes match I've been to.
RIP Graham.

Terrific player. Anyone who plays 100 Tests and averages 44 is no mug. He could play attacking or defensively depending on the situation. Alec Stewart described him as a fluent player and so he was.

I was lucky enough to see him play on a couple of occasions. RIP Mr Thorpe
