£500,000 apart.
The clubs have been debating the guaranteed sum
starting point and Ipswich are at £8.5 million but won't
budge to the £9 million demanded.
The package for Szmodics includes extras for goals
bonuses, a survival bonus and even a promotion bonus
if Ipswich go down and then come back up in 2025-26.
However the negotiators cannot sort out the first sum

If you were taking this deal in complete isolation and we didn't have to make any future signings you might have a point. But Ashton has to conduct business in every single window and the minute you show weakness and the propensity to keep upping an offer (particularly after and agreed amount) you will quickly find every club taking you for mugs in the window.
We need to bring 2-3 more in but we aren't desperate to overpay for players. This is just fans impatience not the clubs.

This is ridiculous, there's no way that every team is suddenly going to know we paid an extra 500k for Szmodics. If they do, what impact does that really have? There are no principles in a football transfer market are there ? You try and buy for as little as possible and you try and sell for as high as possible. We could agree a deal in principle with Blackburn for 9m next week and if Leeds bid 10m they're within their rights to pull out and sell him to Leeds.
Ultimately, we want the player, holding back 500k as a matter of principle could be far more costly in the long term. Especially when we don't currently have any options for the LAM role which he could comfortably play. |  | | |

Then you caveat it. Say, okay we're prepared to bend to 9m on this occasion but if you move the goalposts again the entire move is off. You'd soon find things get finalised. Town hierarchy have been burnt by Blackburn too much before so are trying to give them a taste of their medicine, to our detriment IMO. |

I think we've already done that though. Initially it was £8m + £2m and we went to £8.5m after the goal posts moved. And now they've been moved again by the looks of it. They are just a terrible club to deal with, this is exactly what happened with Gallagher last January as well. |
