Szmodics - Alan Nixon 09:10 - Aug 11 with 18083 views | SitfcB | Ipswich are haggling over a deal for Blackburn Rovers striker Sammie Szmodics - and are bizarrely just £500,000 apart. The clubs have been debating the guaranteed sum starting point and Ipswich are at £8.5 million but won't budge to the £9 million demanded. The package for Szmodics includes extras for goals bonuses, a survival bonus and even a promotion bonus if Ipswich go down and then come back up in 2025-26. However the negotiators cannot sort out the first sum to the frustration of all parties and the player.

Szmodics - Alan Nixon on 09:25 - Aug 11 by Zx1988 | It feels as if it could be a point of principle. If BR previously demanded £8.5m, which Town are now offering, and have now revised their demanded price, I feel as if Town are absolutely in the right not to go higher. If £8.5m becomes £9m once the demand is met, what's to say that £9m won't become £10m? |
Too right, leave the original offer or move on altogether if this is what's happened. No reason to believe they would deal on the extra £500K even if we conceded to it.

Szmodics - Alan Nixon on 12:18 - Aug 11 by ITFCBlues | Conversely, what if we wait 3 weeks thinking they'll wilt and then decide to keep him? |
I don’t understand? They’ve already moved the goalposts once, which we then upped our offer to £8.5m. Once we done that, they then moved them again to £9m? The issue isn’t us, it’s Blackburn ffs. It’s not about waiting 3 weeks for him, it’s about Blackburn to stop d!cking around in the negotiations.

I agree, but think Szmodics is worth it. He's at the top of his game, top scorer, would suit us perfectly. We'd not have to wait 6 months for him to get up to speed. Age isn't an issue if he keeps us up. But all this might not be true. We've no idea but i have no doubt he would improve us greatly and the clock is ticking.

Then we offer £8.65m as a final offer, then move on. We absolutely cannot go to £9m when BBurn indicated they would accept at £8.5m

But they've named their price again. Do we wait 3 weeks in the hope they lower it again? If we do, we could miss out and then overpay for the next on the list as clubs sense we're getting desperate.

Szmodics - Alan Nixon on 12:51 - Aug 11 with 3169 views | Jimmy86 | So, I get the fact we have made a bid that we deem suitable and that we don't want to be bullied.. but, if we really want Szmodics then why don't we just pay the 500k and get the deal done?! All this posturing makes us look stupid... We could posture all we like if we'd brought in other targets at the same time, but we haven't..

Okay, but they’ve done that twice already? Which we’ve obliged to and they’ve named it again. That’s a Blackburn problem, not us. I’d simply walk away from the deal now, but I know it’s not as simple as that.

Thing is, Szmodics is clearly a top target, otherwise we'd have already walked away... If we'd have been bringing in other targets in the mean time, we could posture all we like regarding this fee for Szmodics couldn't we.. but, we clearly want him... Maybe pay the deposit extra 500k and then IF they change the deal we then walk away | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Szmodics - Alan Nixon on 13:04 - Aug 11 with 3036 views | runaround | If and I appreciate it’s a big if, Blackburn will accept £9m then we should offer it and then move on if they don’t accept it. McKenna obviously wants him and in terms of some of the fees rumoured £9m is not too bad. If we refuse to budge then to buy a similar replacement could well cost us more than £9m Of course it might be that there are other things at play but it does seem that it would be the wrong choice to miss out on Szmodics just because we weren’t prepared to bid a little more
Szmodics - Alan Nixon on 13:15 - Aug 11 with 2949 views | mellowblue | This reminds of the failed transfer of Kevin Philllips from Watford back in 1997. The difference between what Watford wanted and what we were prepared to pay was really small and while we were prevaricating over it, the matter was going to be handed over to a tribunal to sort; but as we already had a tribunal decision pending with another player (cannot remember who) , the door opened for Sunderland to snatch him. We went with David Johnson later that year and he was obviously good, but I think we would have been promoted earlier had we secured Phillips.

God it should be a doddle for him with all this expertise to help him. As someone who has negotiated contracts of £330M, I could see a way through this, but Mark Ashton is a very shrewd negotiator and I wouldn't deign to offer advice to him. Rovers only have one Szmodics to sell. We have a plethora of no 10s that we could bid for. Nuff said.

Szmodics - Alan Nixon on 10:02 - Aug 11 by Guthrum | The question, for me, is from whence did Nixon get his information and what does that suggest about it's intention. Was it a Town source trying to make Blackburn look petty and dishonest? Was it a Blackburn source trying to do the reverse? Was it the player's agent trying to up the price a bit without compromising the chances of it actually happening? Or is it not def info at all, but an educated guess from an experienced journalist's reading of the situation? |
He’s definitely been fed this by the club to benefit both of them. It’s part of why he maintains such a good relationship with them. All a bit shady

Blackburn trying to make szmodics think twice about town until they receive a bid from Leeds. After all.. how desperate can a club be for your services I'd they are unwilling to pay 500k for you... However leeds are desperate for you....

Why would Szmodics accept any offer from Leeds, though? Turn them down and Blackburn are stuck with him as an unhappy player or have to sell to Town. He knows he has a chance to play in the Premier League on Premier League wages. Why take the gamble on Leeds instead unless he is told by Town we are no longer interested? As for the original point, we don't know if Nixon is right but, if he is £500k would still be more than 6% increase on the fee. OK quibble over whether to add a clause on international call-up or European qualification, etc, but just throwing another £500K at it isn't necessarily wise. Perhaps we have already thrown an extra £1M or so at the deal anyway. We will have a clear idea of where we value him and we are not going to be driven well beyond it.

Potential for more upfront from Leeds than town perhaps. I'm not entirely sure but there seems to be a lot of noise across social media about Leeds in all this. End of day. If blackburn reject town bid but accept a Leeds on. Szmodics would then have a choice of stay at Blackburn or earn more money and get promoted. ( obv anything can happen with Leeds but you'd imagine they will be up this year)

My point is that Szmodics has far more power in this than he is being credit for. He knows Town are interested and what we would offer. Can Leeds really match that unless they get promoted? Szmodics saw how they failed on that front last season and there is no guarantee they will do it this. If he has learned anything from signing a new contract without a sensible release clause, surely it must be don't jump at the first offer he is made because Blackburn have played hard ball.

Szmodics - Alan Nixon on 12:15 - Aug 11 by Kieran_Knows | What if we bid £9m, then they ask another £500k? |
You can contractually right up a deal beforehand, that if Town were to bid £9m between a set date that it would be automatically accepted, almost an emergency release clause - specific for us. Sounds extreme, but when you’re dealing with clubs like this, extreme measures are required.

Listen, can’t pay over the odds…. It will bite us on PSR. Do we actually know for certain the clubs are just 500k apart - this just may be media talk? Nobody apart from Blackburn and Ashton know the full details.

Nobodies doubting he’s a top target, but what more else can we do when Blackburn keep upping how much they want? They wanted £8m, rising to £10m. We bid that. They wanted £8.5m rising to £11m, we bid that. They now want £9m rising to £12m. We could well bid that and then they want more again. Quite rightly, Town are now considering their options as it’s an absolute pain in the backside dealing with them.
