£500,000 apart.
The clubs have been debating the guaranteed sum
starting point and Ipswich are at £8.5 million but won't

The package for Szmodics includes extras for goals
bonuses, a survival bonus and even a promotion bonus
if Ipswich go down and then come back up in 2025-26.
However the negotiators cannot sort out the first sum

It feels as if it could be a point of principle.
If BR previously demanded £8.5m, which Town are now offering, and have now revised their demanded price, I feel as if Town are absolutely in the right not to go higher.
If £8.5m becomes £9m once the demand is met, what's to say that £9m won't become £10m? |
Too right, leave the original offer or move on altogether if this is what's happened. No reason to believe they would deal on the extra £500K even if we conceded to it. |  | | |

I'm astounded by the number of posters who seemingly are happy for us to pay over the odds for various players or are happy for us to be held to ransom by other teams. |
I agree, but think Szmodics is worth it. He's at the top of his game, top scorer, would suit us perfectly. We'd not have to wait 6 months for him to get up to speed. Age isn't an issue if he keeps us up.
But all this might not be true. We've no idea but i have no doubt he would improve us greatly and the clock is ticking. |  |

If and I appreciate it’s a big if, Blackburn will accept £9m then we should offer it and then move on if they don’t accept it. McKenna obviously wants him and in terms of some of the fees rumoured £9m is not too bad.
If we refuse to budge then to buy a similar replacement could well cost us more than £9m
Of course it might be that there are other things at play but it does seem that it would be the wrong choice to miss out on Szmodics just because we weren’t prepared to bid a little more |  | | |

The difference between what Watford wanted and what we were prepared to pay was really small and while we were prevaricating over it, the matter was going to be handed over to a tribunal to sort; but as we already had a tribunal decision pending with another player (cannot remember who) , the door opened for Sunderland to snatch him. The question, for me, is from whence did Nixon get his information and what does that suggest about it's intention.
Was it a Town source trying to make Blackburn look petty and dishonest?
Was it a Blackburn source trying to do the reverse?
Was it the player's agent trying to up the price a bit without compromising the chances of it actually happening?
Or is it not def info at all, but an educated guess from an experienced journalist's reading of the situation? |

He knows he has a chance to play in the Premier League on Premier League wages. Why take the gamble on Leeds instead unless he is told by Town we are no longer interested?
As for the original point, we don't know if Nixon is right but, if he is £500k would still be more than 6% increase on the fee. OK quibble over whether to add a clause on international call-up or European qualification, etc, but just throwing another £500K at it isn't necessarily wise. Perhaps we have already thrown an extra £1M or so at the deal anyway. We will have a clear idea of where we value him and we are not going to be driven well beyond it. |  |

My point is that Szmodics has far more power in this than he is being credit for. He knows Town are interested and what we would offer. Can Leeds really match that unless they get promoted? Szmodics saw how they failed on that front last season and there is no guarantee they will do it this. If he has learned anything from signing a new contract without a sensible release clause, surely it must be don't jump at the first offer he is made because Blackburn have played hard ball. | |

You can contractually right up a deal beforehand, that if Town were to bid £9m between a set date that it would be automatically accepted, almost an emergency release clause - specific for us.
