BBC writer predicts PL placings and we are... 09:49 - Aug 14 with 6214 viewsBlue_badge

Phil McNulty writes on the BBC web page and places us 20th!
He does admit that transfers could change things and that he gets it wrong - predicted Leicester to be relegated when they went on to win the league.

I think the problem is partly that we are a very unknown quantity. There is nothing upon which to base an assessment of how ITFC will do in the Prmier League.

So they fall back on received wisdom about the necessity of having Prem-experienced players in our squad and a short-term memory of all promoted sides having gone down last season (whereas they all stayed up the one before).

Also worth remembering that most Prem pundits (particularly on YouTube) only have the most casual knowlege of what goes on outside that division. You can tell this by the very superficial analysis of our squad and playing style (everyone's heard of Leif Davis, knows we score lots of goals, beyond that, not much), let alone signings or the stylistic changes we've seen in preseason.

Even those who acknowlege our strengths soon default to the position that unless you hire an entirely new squad, you're going to go down. I've seen people praise us highly, then just say "it won't be enough" and stick us in the bottom three anyway.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

To be fair, we are newly promoted, haven’t added to the squad as well as some, so you can see where he’s coming from.

I predict 15th.

RIP Sir Bobby

He's playing it safe, very little deviation from last year's placings.

He’s a terrible football journo tbf - very limited knowledge, and utterly obsessed with Man Utd (even though they aren’t that relevant these days).

There’s always an assumption that anyone operating under the BBC brand must be top of their game, that’s patently not the case (they even employ Chris Sutton ffs!).

Transfers will change things massively. If there are no changes to the squad over the next couple of weeks then we're down - no doubt, no question. But there will be changes.

How can you be sure of that? I'm not confident. We have hit our ceiling I'm afraid.

I find this popular take a strange one. We are currently looking at 2 players from one of the worse Prem sides in ever. On the other hand do people not remember the likes of Venus, McGreal, Clapham and Scowcroft. Our players have no less potential than those players had at the start of our first season last time and not only did we survive but finish 5th. We then went down after signing ‘better’ players. Does this not show team cohesion and spirit and all of that stuff is more important than talent alone.

Do you honestly think McKenna would have signed a new contract (and not one for more established PL side) it that was the feeling?

Well if you look at how last season's three promoted sides did, its not an unreasonable prediction. let's hope we can buck the trend!

Why do I think we'd go down if, at the end of the August, this is our squad? Because we have no depth. Injuries and suspensions would kill any chance we have of staying up. Ladapo didn't perform in League One last year, suddenly he's our second choice striker. Harness missed out on the squad for swathes of last year, now he's one of the first go to options. First XI wise we're stronger than last season. Go further than that and we're actually weaker.

The previous season all three stayed up. In seven out of the last ten seasons, one of the promoted sides has finished mid table or better.

One thing I'm very, very confident about is that the whole will be greater than the sum of the parts when it comes to us this season. It's what McKenna does, I've got absolutely no doubt that we'll see it again this season and we'll be well organised, well drilled, incredibly fit, determined, together, spirited, and with a never say die attitude.

The question mark for me is whether the assumed gap between the current sum of the parts and the necessary whole to compete at this level is bridgeable, or whether it remains a bit too stark and we struggle despite McKenna. It certainly wont be because of him. Time will tell on that, we'll certainly need a few more players in over the next couple of weeks to help, and getting Hirst back to fitness is also going to be important.

Well he does seem increasingly frustrated in recent weeks when the reality is starting to kick in.

Ladapo isn't really our second choice striker. Hirst will only miss about three or four Prem games, if the eight-week schedule is accurate. We have Delap, we have al-Hamadi. We score from all over the pitch anyway.

Harness has been a particularly bright spark in the preseason games. Who's to say he can't continue that into the League season?

Our defence, the weakest part of the team last season, has been considerably strengthened. We have options at CB.

CM is probably the area we have least cover, but even there we have Taylor.

Edit: I'd be really surprised if we made no more signings between now and the window closing, anyway.

On your edit, I agree. We'll bring others in. I don't think the squad is strong enough, in terms of depth, as it stands. But there will be ins and outs before the end of the month.

Ladapo will be 4th choice when hirst and al-hamadi are back fit in a few weeks. Harness will be back on the bench when broadhead is fit.

You're not including the players that are already injured. But you should because they are part of our squad.

After our early business when we brought in Omari and Johnson, plus the Philogene and Greaves rumours I thought we would be spending around £110 million and would comfortably finish between 12th to 15th. Now I'm just hopeful we will survive so we become a more attractive proposition to players next summer.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Isn't he an Everton fan?

I've not ever picked up on a Utd obsession and even this year he's only tipping them for 5th.

He seems to think Everton will finish 11th, which is more laughable

Hard to disagree at this moment in time with this prediction.

3 days until we face Liverpool and Jackson Moore Sarmiento Ball Travis out & only Delap in is perhaps not what I was expecting this summer for our midfield & attacking options. (Omari is of course a superb signing but was with us last season)

Maybe it’s the lack of sleep in this heat causing a slight worry to my usual cheery self but the clock is ticking on getting the signings we need.

On the flip side after over 20 years part of me doesn’t care too much and I am just going to enjoy the ride and enjoy the under dog tag.

I remember Joe Royle was no fan of his at all! Think he covered Everton when Joe was boss there.
