IBC's outrageous plans to hike car parking fees in car parks around PR 18:43 - Sep 3 with 15499 viewsArnieM

Just to warn people who travel in to was Town from afar. The IBC have a reported, predicted, £22m + shortfall in funding and are planning a raft of cuts to save money.

But one of their planned items to claw in money that caught my eye is their plans to raise car parking fees in the the car parks around Portman Rd on match days, from the reported £6 to a whopping £15!!!!!

How the hell can they justify that? I don't think ITFC will be very impressed.

This is what happens when people vote Tory.

Parking is one area they can make money and with the massive attendances the club is ripe for it. Would you rather they added the revenue into tax payers?

I'm not here to defend IBC, and that proposed parking increase is a p1ss take, but pretty much every council in the country is facing a financial disaster in the coming years if they don't take really difficult decisions now.

Years of austerity under the tories have left councils fooked, with council tax freezes for a number of years, reduced grant funding from central government, and the cost of certain services (especially people based services) sky rocketing as demand increases.

Should sell all that land to the club, let’s face it that swimming pool will never get built if they can’t even tidy up a bit of the town centre.

Very true re councils shortfalls. But what really angers me is the IBC are targeting a specific group. It's a kind of profiteering, and definitely inequitable in it's application across car owners- why just football fans?

It's a minor point but IBC don't have responsibility for pot holes that would be Suffolk County Council.

Who funds councils? https://ifs.org.uk/publications/what-outlook-english-councils-funding

As I asked Arnie would they rather councils just kept taxing people instead to make up these shortfalls?

Irrespective it's some fairly blatant price gouging and for a party that loves to go on about the moral high ground is a really bad look.

It's over a 100% price increase for a match day.

Is it a party decision or a fiscal one? Do they take from those using something or from the people they serve?

I think the population are struggling to wake up to the damage the Tories have done to almost everything in this country.

Just when you thought the council were thinking let’s showcase Ipswich and get people spending their cash in local establishments which can pay the council tax etc etc. and keeping things open.

Are there, perhaps, two angles to this?

1) Trying to boost revenue
2) Trying to discourage driving to the ground on matchdays, and the gridlock in town after matches

It will be interesting to see if 2) is successful of if it just pushes cars out on surrounding roads, other parking.

I have a 2 hour drive to home games and public transport isn't really a viable option so have no choice but to park. I currently park about a mile away and walk in and I think within that range there are plenty of spots. Think some people will stump up the extra money while others will just park elsewhere.

So it’s not only the private sector engaged in price gouging.

There was a time when the working class could afford to go to football, now councils putting the boot in. Train prices are more than flying abroad so that’s not an options for many (when they are even running). The Park and ride is the worst I’ve used in the whole of England, and not fit for purpose.

The best option seems the various parking apps, and hopefully most will be able to avoid this opportunism.
