Should be having licence to roam. To ping balls left. Right. Down the middle. Let them get stuck in but get at the opposition. That's why Southgate loved him

Spot on, Everton's 16 today barely broke a sweat and ran the midfield.

Kalvin Phillips... on 18:39 - Oct 19 with 3741 views | MK1 | I still think an extra body in there would help Phillips. Taylor/Luongo adding a bit of cover for the back 4 and freeing up Phillips to play a bit more as a play maker.

Kalvin Phillips... on 22:37 - Oct 19 with 3236 views | Vaughan8 | From watching a few games on TV, he did seem to have some premier league "nous". But today he made that silly pass to create Everton a chance early on, but also made some silly tackles giving away freekicks in good areas for Everton. Having said that, he does come in with good interceptions/tackles too. [Post edited 19 Oct 2024 22:45]

To address the discussion, I was excited when we signed him. There's a player in there but I worry his hunger has gone. He'll never get another England call up imo. So what's he got his eye on, what's lighting his fire. I hope McKenna can coach him and inspire him.

How can he have a license to roam when his defensive midfield partner is too frightened to put in a tackle because he’s one booking away from a suspension? I’ve said it before, the sooner Morsy gets his booking the better. Then he misses a game and can come back and contribute the way he did for the first six games. [Post edited 19 Oct 2024 23:15]

What do you think Morsy does? He certainly doesn't just sit deep. Phillips doesn't look like he has the legs to do what you've outlined, and he keeps giving away balls in dangerous areas once or twice a game at the moment.

I am starting to think Phillips and Morsy are too similar / I have yet to see them have a good game together and unfortunately Morsy is the better player and our player. Problems with Phillips is not enough urgency to run back and make up for the mistakes. At Leeds he used to be everywhere, if he lost the ball he tried his hardest to get it back, here he loses it and that’s that, same for Clarke, oh for either of them to have they Sarmiento bull terrier mode, oh I have lost it but I’m bloody going to to get it back. Ok he was a red card in waiting but I miss that.

Yes he was. Morsy performed much better than Phillips yesterday in my view (and that of everybody else I went to the match with ). Not sure what you were watching. [Post edited 20 Oct 2024 8:11]

That's my opinion too. Our ex England international, with plenty of big game experience, marquee signing etc, is being shown up every week by a 33yr old wbo has never played at this level. As mentioned elsewhere on this thread, the concern was/is that Phillips hunger has gone? So far,he is looking like the player I was worried we were getting- one who has done nothing for 3 years with a disastrous big money move behind him and an equally disastrous loan move last season.

He can do it still, a couple of times after 60 mins he has come to life. But he needs to do it from the off

In what way was Morsy better? He hasn’t made a tackle in the last two games since he git his 4th yellow against Villa. Phillips hasn’t been great against West Ham and Everton but at least he isn’t frightened of making a tackle of giving away a tactical foul. Morsy has been a shadow of himself over the last two games.

Yes, sadly that is the case. I do believe that Phillips is a better player overall than Morsy but he is not showing it currently. There is still plenty of time for him to turn his form around though and he needs to play through this and keep getting in the minutes. He has missed a lot of football in recent years so we need to be patient with him.

What guff. He isn't pulling up trees yet. But you've definitely overplayed morsys contribution.

Well for a start he used the ball better and didn't play Calvert Lewin clean through on our goal. Also covered more ground in my view and got around the pitch better. I take the point about him being reserved in the tackle though and Morsy certainly wasn't at his best.

Morsy seemed to be playing in cement to me. Too slow, too ponderous.
| Trust the process. Trust Phil. |

They were both miles off the required standard yesterday. Morsy seems to take 2 touches and 5 seconds too long and Philips has no identity. I'm not sure what his brief is and what he's meant to be good at.
