Rice or Pasta 11:54 - Nov 19 with 2229 viewsChurchman

Now everyone knows the potato is the king of such carbohydrates. Premier League Champions from the day Sir Francis Raleigh decided to eat them rather than build houses with them (see Blackadder) and gave up his bicycle making business.

However, challenging for Europe is Pasta and Rice. I like both a lot but on that desert island with a choice between the two, I’d choose rice.

Which do you prefer and what is your favourite rice and pasta dish?

For rice it has to be a tandoori chicken biryani and for pasta, sorry, it has to be a really good meat laden spaghetti bolognaise with a good lasagne a close second.

Rice is marginally best, but isn't it unsafe to eat too much? Could be wrong...

Millions of Chinese people seem to do alright on it though I guess too much of anything (other than Walkers Smokey bacon crisps) is a bad thing.

It really depends. If you go the route of pasta with meat sauce lumped on top, then rice every time. However, if you get the pasta cooed del monte and then finish it in the sauce - you have a battle on. Also... No pasta is the same, and rice either.

WKJ's Top Pasta/Rice List
1. Orzo - This is a grain shaped pasta that you can cook in Risotto like dishes, but it is easier than risotto

2. Jasmin rice - Curry from any continent works well with Jasmine and the tiniest bit of sesame oil stirred through it

3. Orecchiette - this is like shell pasta but a little thicker with pronounced patterns on it. It really goes well with a saucy dish as the patterns carry the sauce. The thickness is nice too as it doesn't have that odd shine to it that some pasta does

4. Long grain white - Left over long grain white rice to make a stir fry dish, or fried rice. Perfect with leftovers. Like in this image where I used leftover pork and peas from a roast and made a fried rice. 10/10 for the perfect poached egg too

5. Linguine - Can go with lots of things, stroganoff, carbonara, sausage and spinach - this is the superior pasta over spaghetti for those quick dinners with a little class about them.

Both are pretty boring without flavourings added.
But I'd say I have rice slightly more than pasta. Even a sticky rice with nothing added is nice enough but I can't think of any pasta that would be nice on its own. And in terms of choosing world cuisine when eating out, the last I'd choose would be Italian (and even then, I'd probably have pizza).

Never quite understood the point of all the different shapes of pasta either to be honest. Lady Dollers insists on having the right type for the right dish but I reckon you could swap them around without it making too much difference. I appreciate I might be being an ignorant twonk here though.

I do a decent spag bol or spag and meatballs, but they're all about the sauce/meat really, the pasta's little more use than the plate it's sat on.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Completely agree with Italian food ranking low in world cuisine. Its the most overrated food ever.

Italian food is something I will never go out for (If im paying). To me, it is very nice and fresh comfort food which I can make at home just as well. Obviously Italy has some high class fancy food too, but to me it pales in comparison to most Asian dishes.

I’ll be in the minority but I’d place rice above potatoes. It’s the staple in the majority of my god tier dishes such as:

- Nasi Goreng (my choice if I could only have one meal for the rest of my life)
- Bibimbap (Korean dish that’s getting more exposure with the rise in popularity of Korean fried chicken)
- Biryani
- Risotto
- Paella
- Jambalaya

And that’s before we consider how great sushi rolls and Rice Pudding are.

Potatoes are great and pasta hugely overrated (but not as overrated as pizza).

Agree completely. My partner is Spanish and is a big fan of Italian/Mediterranean food. I don't really dislike it I just find it a tad boring. It's an entire cuisine based on flour water and tomato sauce.
I will eat almost anything but I'm not a big fan of fish or pasta. I nearly died of starvation in Sardinia a few years back..

'pasta cooed del monte' ? Is that the man from Al Dente saying 'yes'?

As far as the OP goes, if the only other thing you have in the cupboard is cheese then it has to be pasta, if it is currants then it has to be rice.

And all the posters on this thread saying they would never go out for an Italian, or that Italian restaurants are not that good are just going to the wrong Italian restaurants.

you can sometimes get food poisoning if you re-heat cooked rice that hasn't been chilled quickly enough then stored cold enough, but not usually an issue if you re-heat it hot enough

Bread is the King of carbs.

You are arguing over who is in second position, with potatoes propping up the bottom of the table.

I'm with you there, how places like Prezzo survive is beyond me. We have so much access to so many world ingredients I don't understand why you would go out and pay £17 for a bowl of Spag Bol.

And Pizza is the dullest food known to mankind, such a boring food choice.

' In France and Italy, it's common to fry an egg and drop it onto a pizza. You could fry it partially and finish it in the oven, or fry it first and add it just before serving. There’s even a pizza in Italy called the Bismarck that features a sunny-side-up egg atop marinara, mozzarella, and prosciutto'
