So to be clear do you think fireworks should be banned?

No not at all - it’s the fact that Khan is a total hypocrite. He can damage the environment with his large firework displays ,but tradesmen with vehicles that don’t meet his criteria are penalised.

1- In the scheme of things what is the impact of a single fireworks display as against pollutants in central london?

2- Why do you "hate him" rather than simply disagreeing with a policy. Be specific.

To a certain extent, everyone is a hypocrite when it comes to the environment. In today’s society it’s almost impossible to live a life which is 100% environmentally ethical. But one firework display, probably doesn’t come close to the amount of pollution on London’s roads.

Interestingly it was Boris Johnson who was going to impose the zone but for whatever reasons a lot of people seem to have forgotten this.

IMO The honours system has been in disrepute since at least Blair's time as PM. Sadiq Khan's knighthood is one of the less contentious awards.

I am advised by someone who studies such issues that a 'large scale' firework display can emit several tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

'Hate' or despise him would both be accurate descriptions of my feelings. I have been affected by his ridiculous policies that have affected me financially as have numerous other working people in and around London. He wasted £6.3m to rename certain railway lines in London, but made major cutbacks to other essential services that he governs. Not being a socialist or a sponger and having to work in and around London is the reason I hate/despise him. I didn't and would never vote for him. They are my reasons Red Rick...

Why do you right-wing snowflakes always make stuff up to get angry about? He doesn’t hate farmers but for some reason you lot believe the crap you make up.

Could the reason be things such as this?

And when it comes to other recent misrepresentations of Khan on social media, here are a few other examples.

Several tonnes is correct.

In London we emit several tonnes per capita. We are talking the equivalent of one human in London for the year.

Explain specifically how you have been impacted by a policy.

I like your final sentence. You have changed my forum username a bit to suggest I am some sort of rabid socialist. Excellent work. Albeit hopelessly misguided.

From 2014

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “The world’s first Ultra Low Emission Zone is an essential measure to help improve air quality in our city, protect the health of Londoners, and lengthen our lead as the greatest city on earth.

What was wrong with Boris wanting to reduces air pollution, and protect the lungs of children?

You don’t want cleaner air for adults and children in London?

And the firework displays he put on were no different to Khan's, but no doubt he wasn't called a hypocrite.

There is a persistent racist campaign to encourage people to believe this sort of stuff.

There is a classic Obrien clip on YT with a caller who has been convinced that Khan would back Sharia law.

Absolutely.

And whilst, I can see the necessity of Labour appointing Peers under the current system, wouldn't it be nice if they at least stopped giving out other honours to members of the party?

Labour (sensibly) abolished honours for political service in the 1960s or 1970s. Thatcher restored them, recognising the power of patronage & I doubt even a Labour PM is going to get rid of them (sadly).

The only necessity is self preservation, it’s why I’m so sick of Labour. They’re the Poly Toynbee party, right on opinions at a dinner party but wouldn’t really want anything to change that might disrupt their cushy lifestyles.

A knight hood for a loser, and you think it’s justified🤣

Polite reminder that Shaun Baily, whose only notable achievement was losing to Sadiq Khan in the London Mayoral election, was rewarded with a life peerage with a seat in the HoL, by Boris Johnson.

One thing is for sure the honours system is not fit for purpose, is open to corruption and should either be abolished, or overhauled so that genuinely deserving people get honoured rather than the system being used as a vehicle for political patronage.

Well Khan is hardly popular. He only won with 16% of the vote on a 40% turnout. Think he represents 6% of the population of Greater London! His previous wins have similar figures. Why is the turnout for London elections so poor? I don’t live in London, but why is voter turnout so poor?

I guess Khan was seen as a shoe-in & many people aren't really bothered about who is mayor. 40% turnout for the London mayoral election is average.

And in terms of local elections, which is what it is, 40% is a good turnout.

By contrast, the turnout for Andy Burnham in the last two mayoral elections was around 33%, which is slightly above the 32% average for the 2023 local elections across the country.

Interestingly, the Tories imposed a first-past-the-post for that election because they thought it would help their candidate's chances, no doubt thinking ULEZ and the like might kick in.

In the previous election, Khan got 55% when first and second preference votes were taken into account. That sort of election system is in my view much more appropriate for such an election.

I base it on my experiences as a natural labour voter and former member. The honours system is disgusting, and I bet every Labour MP has said the same, until they got elected. First past the post is massively undemocratic, Labour politicians would agree, until they get elected. Same with the monarchy, House of Lords, tuition fees, child benefit cap, you name it.
