How many more speeches is Kier Starmer on 10:53 - Jan 2 by SuperKieranMcKenna | England is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe, far higher than those listed. It’s also the least forested. One day we’ll rue the loss of food security as we did with our energy crisis. There seems to be little benefit to the relentless growth of our population that I can see other than propping up the state pension Ponzi scheme we’ve created. The endless pointing to economic growth is irrelevant whilst productivity is so poor, per capita GDP has declined, real wages have declined, we are simply fueling a low wage, low skilled economy which is compounding our shortage of skilled workers. The only real beneficiaries are large corporations with an endless supply of cheap labour. Yes the NHS needs workers but this is compounded by the record population growth. Rant over - just frustrated at the ‘more of the same’ we are getting. |
And yet the United Kingdom is still a base for many World class scientific research establishments: The UK has a higher field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) than any other country in the G7 https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a7c256740f0b645ba3c6fae/bis-13-1 The proportion of UK university research that is world-leading grew from 30% in 2014 to 41% in 2021 https://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/universities-uk-international/insights-and-publ Of course it might be that the united kingdom is drifting downwards in terms of education and skills but everywhere else is even worse...

Sure we have some areas of expertise. But in fairness that doesnt really diminish my point regarding us having a largely low skilled workforce. Wages on a per capita and median basis are much lower than the US and much of western and Northern Europe. The declines in GDP per capita are not reflective of creation of good jobs. On a macro scale the economy is grown weakly, on a per capita basis the data suggests there is little tangible economic benefit to the scale of our population growth. Does the success of our science sector you highlighted rely on this?

I do think there is a skills gap to be bridged. We can see that the leviathan which is the United Kingdom will roll on for many years producing both good and bad, will get benefits of renewal and new ideas from migration but will have to contend with capacity problems too. We need an administration that will close with these problems, will look at the low achievement and encourage the downbeat section of our societies and cultures to rise in any way they can (even the Conservatives have their levelling up proponents.) As individuals we must be prepared to facilitate initiatives where we can, even if it means holding our noses and working with people whose views are radically different to ours.

Your comment "What does that really tell you though, how much of that is suitable for development?", which as a broader point suggests there isn't much, which is just not true. I also don't agree with your insinuation that Labour are going to be "tearing up planning rules", which is a rather extreme and negative point against what they're actually doing, which I believe is needed - more (affordable) homes. Isn’t the point that planning rules are not tight enough as it is, can you point me to where Labour are going to be tightening up safeguards against flood prone developments? Given we already have over 100,000 properties in less than a decade built on flood plains theres clearly either an issue of availability of suitable land, or overly lenient planning. With climate change increasing the frequency and severity of floods it’s a serious issue to consider. What’s the point of affordable housing if it’s to be under water the first time a river breaks its banks. The private sector won’t pick up the cost, average home insurance premiums in Florida (if you can get coverage) is $3,000 with flood deductibles commonly over $10,000. If we continue to build on flood prone land then the government will have to tackle the insurability problem. To be honest there are better ways for the government to spend money.

Sensible and obvious changes, such as no further building on flood plains, as observed and wanted by ‘ordinary’ people with lived experience, often seem to be ignored by governments of all kinds except perhaps the LDs (eg their proposals for our care system last July). That’s what disappointments me so far re Labour this term, eg the changes to WFA not being more graduated.

I think the “upset some tourists” comment is regarding his family jumping a queue for a tourist attraction in Spain. Obviously a spiteful story put about by the fascist tories to try to undermine his great start as prime minister. Any one of them would have done the same.

Seems that that claim has been revisited and it wasn't entirely accurate (though not as wildly out as some suggest. Did you really, despite all the information available? It’s always been easy to find demographic info according to sectors. EU nationals worked across them all. They still do, as many got settled status. EU nationals were/are important to the NHS of course, although some reports suggest that a reduction in recruitment from the EU after Brexit has exacerbated staff shortages in certain areas - e.g. https://www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/has-brexit-affected-the-uk-s-medical- Leaving the EU hasn’t made the slightest difference to overall immigration of course (as increasing immigration figures prove), as we need people with certain skill sets. We’re just looking further afield. It would be a long term project to be self-sufficient for our workforce - one that I don’t think any government has the vision or time for. And it’d be a bit weird too. Nothing wrong with calling on expertise from around the world when we need it. Nor even manual labour if we can’t supply enough people at certain times. All Brexit has done is make it harder and more expensive for everyone, but immigration is still going to continue.

“ It would be a long term project to be self-sufficient for our workforce” Absolutely - it’s a direct consequence of penny pinching from both the private sector (much easier to recruit someone whos’s already trained and experienced from abroad), and government (slashing bursaries and grants etc). It’s actually quite immoral that we are taking trained doctors, nurses, engineers etc from countries that i) funded their training/education ii) then end up with their own skills/people shortages. There is no reason in theory we can’t fund the training and education domestically, it just needs a bit of planning beyond the next election cycle. It also feeds into my earlier point that we need to upskill our workforce so that wages can improve, tax take is uplifted and generally improve living standards.

Also doesn't help that we've created conditions in this country (and this is mirrored in many nations) where people don't want children. Meanwhile we've got people living longer and longer and most national pensions schemes take directly from the workforce to fund today's pensioners. Going to be really fun in the next few decades when the age demographics in this and many other countries get too skewed.

Yep. Probably needs a 10-15 year vision with consistency, and that includes funding. It’s no good having nursing bursaries and then not, opening Uni departments and then closing them, etc. You’d also need consistent industrial strategy, etc. I’m convinced it’s beyond us (the UK) in our current state, but it would be doable if we really wanted to do it.

How many more speeches is Kier Starmer on 18:28 - Jan 2 with 930 views | eireblue | You forgot the first part of the quote. Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, commented: “The FMB fully supports the ambitions of the Government in delivering a major increase in the UK’s housebuilding rates.” Brian, didn’t use the word impossible. The phrase was “not viable without…” Now on previous posts, as with this one, you weren’t very accurate with numbers, it is going to be a bit of a hindrance, if you aren’t very good with words as well. Berry continued: “The challenge the UK faces in tackling the housing crisis is immense, and it is particularly pleasing to hear the Prime Minister re-commit to housing targets, alongside pledging support for new major infrastructure projects. His message of support for planning reform will be welcomed by builders across the country. However, this must be delivered in a way which benefits and supports the entire construction industry, including SMEs, if they are going to deliver on their aims. Local builders stand ready to deliver growth and the FMB looks forward to seeing the plans laid out in the Planning and Infrastructure Bill in the coming months.” That isn’t the harshest critique of a Labour policy I have ever read.
