How on earth is that a pen!? 18:52 - Jan 4 with 3580 viewsHciwspi

Looks like Pedro headed the Arsenal players head!

And the reaction is a bit pathetic as well!

Bizarre penalty awarded there, that makes a mockery of the one they didn't give against Leicester

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

The fact that was given on the pitch then again off it after looking at it several times is utterly ridiculous.

If anything I'd have booked the Brighton bloke for his pathetic reaction. Some footballers absolutely fack me off.

Such a poor decision, amazing how they find these week after week.

He was headbutted, i can't see how that was debatable tbh.

It was a late challenge, which connected with the player rather than the ball.

A bit of a collector's item, but still as much of a foul if it had been a tackle.

He was head butted, there really isn’t a debate for whether it is or isn’t a penalty. Would be a free kick elsewhere on the field.

That is clearly incorrect and if the referee or VAR had decided that, he would have seen red.

The only angle I have seen on it appears to show Saliba heading the ball and then pulling his head away before there was contact. That would suggest the contact is initiated by the attacker. However, I am told the alternate angle looks more like a pen.

EDIT: to be clear. It was never a headbutt. It is a clash of heads and because Pedro heads the ball before Saliba heads the side of Pedro's head, it is a penalty. Correct decision but not a headbutt which is a deliberate act and a red card offence. And agree with the OP that from one angle it appears as if Pedro initiates the contact. However, the combination of angles makes it clear it was a foul by Saliba.

Agree it was a headbutt, the argument would be it was a 50/50 but the player was nowhere near the ball.

Surely if it was deemed a headbutt then it's violent conduct and a red?

Chuckling at the polarity in responses here. Thought it was an obvious pen. Forget it's their heads for a second - Pedro gets the ball first, Saliba's late, and catches him. Pen all day long.

I think a late challenge rather than a headbutt.

Same as the difference between a poor tackle and deliberately kicking an opponent.

A very uncommon way to get a penalty but a absolute stonewaller

If you kick someone and get no where near the ball - it’s a pen. It’s the same if you try and throw your head at it

Agree after seeing it again. He is late in the challenge and has headed Pedro's head after Pedro headed the ball.

For me, contact doesn't instantly mean it's a penalty and in this case, there's minimal contact which leads to the Brighton player throwing himself to the floor

It is very very soft and a very unusual decision you have to say

I don't really care about either team frankly, you have to say this Arsenal side is very ordinary going forward. Arteta has a very pragmatic approach.

I thought it was an unusual but relatively clear penalty.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Reaction pathetic, but obviously a penalty even if unusual.

Not a penalty the defender heads the ball before there is contact with the Brighton player.

Having now seen it, that is right. I can only assume the ref and VAR failed to notice contact with the ball.

In real time it's a penalty, but the it is significant that the defender heads the ball, so it shouldn't have been a penalty and should have been overturned by VAR.

Numerous penalties this year where the defender wins the ball 1st - but his actions after - mean a penalty is given

I personally think it’s a stone Walled penalty. Deffo red in rugby aswell :)
