Greaves is not better than him

Hope Woolf stays but Greaves IMO is (and will become further) a significant upgrade. Not that relevant anyway as Greaves won't compete directly with Woolf as is in the LCM slot.

Big part of this isn't McKenna not rating Woolf per se. I think it's become clear how McKenna understand in the prem for system he is using he needs pace in CBs. We can play quite aggressive and leave 1v1s and he wants the ability for CBs to come out of the line and engage and recover back, and more generally be able to cover back quickly (e.g. the Leif non red the other day type scenario).

Woolf in a 3 does work IMO with pace either side. McKenna though wants flex in his system. Godfrey is another exactly in mould of what he has been bringing in.

Poll: Who do we think McKenna (not you) will partner Greaves with ?

I don't think McKenna does rate Woolfenden. It was actually McGreal who 'saved' him from leaving before; when Cook was sacked he brought him back into the side prior to McKenna's arrival. Plus it's always felt like we've been searching for another central defender to take his place.

Sheff Utd wouldn't be able to afford him whilst in the championship. So I doubt it will happen.

I do love how you think it's only me that goes by them, it's pretty much how all clubs do it, especially town.

It's also correct

Muric has done exactly what brought him to the club, those stats are still high. Shot save %, saves again expected, winning balls in the air etc etc. He would unfortunate imo that be took the fall from KMs champ style footy, whilst Walton has had the luxury of having 3 cbs in front of him a flat 5 most of the game and going long most of the game too.

I’d be surprised if it was even anywhere near half of that, and that’s one of many reasons that I’d be really sad if he goes. A very good player for us and one who makes our playing out from the back tick, with the obvious bonus of being an Ipswich youth.

In a world where we are probably >60% of the time going to be back in the championship next season it would seem a bad call to ship out a player that we’d love to have again at that level for a fee for which we probably wouldn’t be able to easily replace him for in the summer.

Totally agree with that last para.

If we go down, Axel and Greaves will likely be off, potentially O'Shea too and Godfrey will be gone.

Will leave us looking for 2-3 CBs as well as replacing Morsy and Cajuste in CM and almost certainly looking for a new manager.

Fair play, stats are key and, though can be twisted, are generally unbiased whilst I am biased. But, to date, the only Premier League level upgrades I see via the eye test from last season's team are Cajuste and Delap.

O'Shea and Greaves are decent but have needed someone alongside them to really look assured. And Burgess did well when he came into the line up, as did/has Woolfenden.

You have a point re Muric, but most of his blunders have come from basic decision making. Clarke has flattered to deceive, Phillips is still trying to find is way after disastrous spells at Man City and West Ham, Townsend popped up for a cup game and hasn't been since, Ogbene was unfortunate with injury as he was looking decent at Brentford whilst Szmodics has been played out of position and has looked a shadow of himself because of it.

Stats don’t work for centre backs as so much of their work is off the ball

absolute nonsense!

Look at Gabriel's stats or Van Dijk's and they're far superior

By your logic they'd be towards the bottom though as they shouldn't have to do any defending when most of their work is done off the ball

I'm not sure what point you're trying to prove with this?

I thought you said stats didn't work with defenders?

Also this is from our league 1 season so I don't really get the relevance?

Just because someone has an interest in him does not mean he will be sold.

I would have thought we would want to keep as many of the current squad here as possible and just trim a few ie possibly Clarke, Masso, Hamadi, Ogbene (de registered).

Whats Wolfs value, £4 - 6 million, not sure it would be worth our time selling him as we need extra cover at the back now playing the 3.

Three weeks ago, I think a decent SUFC offer coming in would probably have been accepted. Now, with LW in the side, I'm less sure. Am thinking if anything happens it might be a late window deal or perhaps one which ultimately happens in the summer.

I can't see that it would make much sense for us to let him leave now - if we go down (which there is a decent chance of!) he'd almost certainly be a key player for us next season, and he's shown in recent weeks that he's at the very least a good squad option in this league.

Harry Clarke is the one I see most likely to leave in this window, possibly only on loan, as I struggle to see a role for him over the rest of the season. He's still young though so could easily step up in time.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

But its not nonsense.

No one btw is saying wolfy hasn't done a good job and no one is saying we shouldn't keep him.

But I can see why KM may feel like he still needs better.

Go back through the seasons and wolfys biggest weakness was ground duals. And as the competition got harder he struggled to win the balls in the air.

Looking across defenders of other sides it seems ground duals can be low but they win balls in the air. Or the opposite.

Portman in this thread saying he doesn't see any upgrades on defence still.. it's quite surprising

Oshea has top stats for heading and winning ground duals

Greaves exactly the same

I do agree both looked better with a wolfy or a Burgess. But I think that's more circumstance than partner..

Oshea had just come in. Then greaves got injured.

As the overused joke goes, I had an interest in Dua Lipa. As it happens, I didn't even get as far as making an enquiry and now she's been tied down to a long-term contract.

Doesn't mean anything is going to happen

People are missing the FFP aspect to this which could be the major point.

As has been reported on another thread Swiss Ramble have us with just 2 million headway , Wolfenden as an academy product brings pure profit when sold , the same as Omari did for Chelsea and the players that Newcastle sold in the summer to Forest and Brighton that Eddie Howe openly said he didn’t want to sell but was forced to , just to meet FFP rules.

Therefore if we are close on FFP, then selling Wolfy ( and possibly Cam H or Baggott in years to come) allows the club more flex on incoming players and deals. If we want to strengthen ( which pretty much everyone agrees we need to do) then we also have to play by the finance rules sadly.

It doesn't make a massive difference for them to be academy players as pretty much our entire squad that came up are in the same position (that is they have a really low book value). The difference between selling Woolfenden and Davis would be low hundreds of thousands (if that) from a financial reporting perspective (but would me much higher than Greaves/O'Shea).

As said before the best centre back on the ball I can't comment on Godfrey as not seen enough plus his only here at the moment for 6 months.

It was particularly noticeable on Sunday just how much he offers us on the ball, even though Walton generally hoofed it.

He's really not going to make much of a dent in our FFP headroom. Would be shocked if went for anything more than about 3mil

I think you need to understand how fees are spread over the duration of the contracts offered to players.

We have plenty of wriggle room to spend in this transfer window.

Greaves is not better than him

Sorry but I disagree. But isn't that why we all have opinions. You are entitled to yours I am entitled to mine. Although there does seem to be some who think only their opinion counts. Nothing would or does give me greater pleasure than to see home grown players do well. Unfortunately sentiment can't cloud a managers judgement and whilst KM's position seems pretty secure it is still up to him to try and keep Town in the Premier League. Currently we probably need four player to come in this month. That means I would think Ogbene being de-listed, Ahamadi either going on loan or sold, Clarke possibly on the move so that leaves one other. I have no idea whether it's Woolfenden or not. Rumours seem to suggest he wants a move and bringing in yet another defender suggests that's a possibility. As for value I think talk of 8 or 12 million is pie in the sky. I would think 3-5 million being more realistic.

Why four players?

Apart from a striker, which is critical, what else do we really need?

All other positions seem to be covered, many in multiple ways.
