It’s fairly irrelevant what they paid, it’s what is his market value. If Everton are prepared to pay that much then we either have to match / beat it or we don’t get him.

Hopefully some/all of the difference between what we offered in the summer and this is made up of additional long term add-ons that help Villa paint this as a win for them but that don't hit us unless he absolutely hits a different level.

January is a sellers market. Villa have done good business financially from their perspective and we obviously wanted him badly enough to pay the premium.

He’s a England under 21 player with 3 goals in 7 games, with champions league experience this year and basically costs the same as Delap and Hutchinson

20m is a bargain on ffp if say over 5 years ;)
