The chap must be doing something right, if the likes of Musk are determined to try and make sure he doesn't see out a full term.

Musk should be more careful if he really wants Starmer out, he's in danger of pushing public opinion the other way. KS was already doing an effective job of losing popularity without the intervention.

I'm a little baffled as to why someone in his (Musks) position cares enough about us to devote this much attention, I thought the UK was the insignificant and unimportant half of this 'special' relationship?!

Unless it really is solely about driving up engagement on X...

I could only understand it from context.

But essentially, you're right. What he's done is paid someone else to play the game for him so he has all the best stuff. He's also done this is another game that is very similar.

Then he plays it on a stream for other people who notice he doesn't know what he's talking about or doing.

Cannot really see how this ends well, we're heading in a very dangerous direction indeed and there isn't really enough will to actively reverse it.

Stanley Johnson was a former European Commissioner, MEP and Parliamentary candidate, so more understandable than giving Musk's old man any airtime.

All of you are missing the bigger picture here... Musk may be a d1ck but he's a powerful d1ck and has the ear of Donald Trump. You know, the guy who is about to become US president? If he's got a beef with our govt, it certainly isn't going to be good for UK-US relations particularly in terms of much needed new trade deals. Our economy is already struggling and being EU outcasts means we rely much more on the US for favourable trade deals. I imagine Sir Knifealot Mayor of London will get involved in more spats with Trump also to further fan the flames. At least Trump like Boris. He certainly isn't going to see Kier Starmer in the same light. I dont see good relations with the US during the next Trump administration.

What does the article say?

You should be able to access it via most paywall-avoidance methods.

However, some selected quotes:

"Musk, the world’s richest man and key confidant of US president-elect Donald Trump, is probing how he and his rightwing allies can destabilise the UK Labour government beyond the aggressive posts he has issued on his social media platform X, the people said."

"Musk has sought information about whether it might be possible to build support for alternative British political movements — notably the rightwing populist Reform UK party — to force a change of prime minister before the next election, according to associates."

"Matt Goodwin, a rightwing political commentator, said Musk — and other Americans — had become “fascinated” by the grooming gangs scandal in the UK over the past week in part because “it’s so horrific”.
But he said he also believed it was because Musk has “an instinctive distrust of the Labour government and Keir Starmer”."

"Musk has been examining possible candidates to replace Farage as leader of the party, including Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe, and has probed what mechanisms there are to replace him, according to people briefed on his thinking."

For me, the real no-no when it comes to Musk is his support for the AfD, a far right organisation with neo-Nazi links.

To take just a few examples.

In 2017, ten AfD Bundestag members were found to have participated in a closed Facebook group named "the Patriots" in which, among other things, antisemitic, racist, pro-Nazi and conspiratorial posts were widespread.

A study commissioned by the American Jewish Committee in 2021 came to the conclusion that antisemitism belongs to the "programmatic core" of the AfD. According to the study, the party conducts "targeted campaigns" against Jewish celebrities. The study's author, Professor Lars Renmann, stated that "despite some lip service to the contrary, hostility towards Israel, Holocaust relativization, antisemitic conspiracy thinking and anti-Jewish images occupy a prominent place" in the AfD.

In January 2024, it was revealed that senior members of the party, including Roland Hartwig, then advisor to party co-leader Alice Weidel, attended a meeting alongside neo-Nazi influencers, where plans for the deportation of millions of "asylum seekers", "non-assimilated people", and those with "non-German backgrounds" were discussed, including those with German citizenship and residency rights.

People such as Musk are also happy with the closing down of social media rivals.

I think all US presidents, tend to do what’s best for the US, first and foremost.

I don’t think any US president would do a deal that on balance helps the U.K., but has a negative impact on a section of US voters.

Trump would do a deal with anyone, as long as it is favourable to him.

Musk really needs a primer on how the British constitution works.

The only way to oust Starmer between elections is if his own MPs and party demands it.

Labour leader election rules make this difficult most of the time.

Even if they do, whoever replaces him is going to be another Labour MP.

There is the route of forcing a vote of no confidence in the government which could lead to an election, but still this would rely on Labour MPs voting for it in numbers.

Aside from using his money and platform to influence support for his chosen alternative among the voters when an election does finally come, I don't see how he expects this to play out.

My feeling, and it's a scary concept, is that he might try and incite some sort of grass-roots insurrection to try and force change from the ground up?

You'd be well advised to consider the finer details of any such agreement.

I would imagine he will solve it in the same way he sorted out the Taliban in Afghanistan.

America aren’t spending money on the military in Afghanistan now, so a win for Trump.
