I genuinely think you’re the only person on the planet that can dislike someone like Chappers!
Top presenter,a great guy and a proper footy fan.
Surprising as it is that I agree with Glasgow Blue I can assure you that he is far from the only one who finds the cloying, adenoidal, bland and anodyne Mark Chapman the most useless football presenter that exists. You might as well have the programme presented by a bucket of custard.

That's Sam Matterface, surely. To quote something I once saw on Facebook, "Sam Matterface is so boring, paint watches HIM dry."

This can only have been written by somebody who has never heard of seen Robbie Savage, and can't remember Mark Lawrenson.
Bearing in mind that you can't please all the people, all the time, this seems like a very good choice by the BBC, and Kelly Cates to take over MotD2 is also a solid option.
Gonna be really difficult for the 60+ gammons to argue that Terry Yorath's and Kenny Dalglish's daughters don't know anything about football!
(Or anyone who has ever seen them broadcast, when they patently do!)
Anyone who is not happy with this decision, just needs to take a second and remember that Tim Lovejoy's agent was almost certainly placing phone calls into the wee hours!

Think you've got this one wrong. Very knowledgeable, genuine fan who can mix it up from asking difficult questions to messing around taking the proverbial, often aimed at Sutton. Has worked his way up from doing the token 30 second sport slot on Radio 1 to main sport Anchor on Radio 5 plus all his TV work. Has had a hellish ride in his off air life too.

To be serious for a moment, there are a number of reasons why Lineker was a success.
Firstly, as a player who played at the highest levels you had a feeling that his insight was well grounded.
Secondly, his style of presentation was easy going but contrasted the hard edged opinions with whimsical moments of self deprecation.
Thirdly, he was a supporter as well as a player. Whatever we think of Leicester (and there are supporters of other clubs who probably harbour similar thoughts about Ipswich) we can have empathy with the follower of a provincial team through thick and thin.
Finally, his 'moment of truth' when he was outspoken on the Goebbels like media tactics of The Daily Mail was perhaps surprising (unless you have heard his perceptive thoughts on Maradonna etc. on podcasts) but telling and he held firm and came through that.
I have been far too personal in my dismissal of Chapman in this thread, and I don't begrudge him his success, but as a presenter I find him deflating and cannot see him as a successor to Lineker. To such an extent that watching him on Match of the Day 2 I long for the halcyon days of Colin Murray...

agree with all that. chapman's fairly bland, but is a decent choice as the diversity pick to placate the anti-woke pearl-clutchers!

The best MOTD presenters has all been ex players IMHO. Bob Wilson, Jimmy Hill and Lineker. David Coleman was the best of the non players.
