Gut feeling - are we getting a new striker? 19:59 - Jan 15 with 7668 viewsJrm_72

Just what do you feel in your bones, yea or neigh?

To be clear, not wishing to make a wider point nor stir them up, just wondering what people feel seeing as we all know nowt about what goes on inside the club.

I feel no for what its worth...

FFP. Whether our signings have been hit or miss is debatable, but the fact is if Philogene signs we've spent approx. £125M since promotion so probably can't afford anything other than a loan.

The problem is that if there are any decent strikers out there then many of the teams in the Prem would be after them that's why there's so much interest in Delap. To replace him is virtually impossible, so what we need is someone that's a few rungs up on AAH which may be possible but I think more likely a loan than buying unless we have seen someone with real potential either lower League or abroad.

Would you have thought the same after £80m of spending or £100m, though? Crunching the numbers available to us, it isn't clear that £125m is / was always our ceiling.

I've no idea what our spending limit is as it's complicated and depends if we want to take a calculated gamble that player(s) could be sold before 30th June.

But I think it's pretty certain that to buy a PL ready striker would take us over the limit.

Gut feeling? No. But I’m usually wrong so expect Newcastle’s Izak to be on the bench next week!

The market is crazy and so are the prices for players..

I think it really is 50/50 and if we get one it will have to be a compromise. Too many good prem clubs looking for the same. There is absolutely no value out there.

A loan would be very hard to do with us having Delap nailing down the spot.

Providing the overall wage bill is currently below or around £100m, we may have over £50m PSR headroom this season after the Philogene deal concludes. 'Maxing out' may involve another £100m of spending, with 5-year contracts and reasonable wages.

The more we spend, the bigger the risk for future seasons though, no doubt. And too many unknowns for us to usefully speculate.*

*Sorry that was a lazy sentence. It all hinges on the unknown wage bill, as we can be reasonably confident that our max spending allowance for the season is between £165m and £185m, and it's easy for us to work out how transfer fees will affect this season's accounts.

Yep, I'm going Guiu on loan.

To replace Delap after he goes there for £55m

Probably our most expensive signing this season has been Kelvin Phillips with a big loan fee and wages (of course no liability beyond this season)

Also we’re supposed after Doak too so FFP or not it looks like we’re going for it.

In short it looks like a fair bit more money being splurged before the deadline

We will get a striker but it's probably going to be a less fashionable one with some previous PL experience so someone like Iheanacho makes a lot of sense

They'll be better than AAH and he can then be freed up to go on loan, as he was planned in the summer

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Yes, I think we'll go all out for Ferguson on loan.

I know Arsenal and West Ham have been linked, but Brighton will want him to get minutes and my guess is don't want him going to a team that could finish above them in the league.

That’s my gut feeling too. He has been a long term target and in recent days Brighton have suggested that they are more open to a loan move that suits both the club and the player. He also would not be a major financial commitment in relation to profit & sustainability limits. My only concern would be that unfortunately Ferguson seems a bit prone to injuries like Hirst! I think it’s worth the risk though personally.

I think you and I may have posted about this at the same time when the summer window shut. You’ve obviously worded it far better, and nicer than I have though.

For the money we’ve spent/spending and the sound bites that MA comes out with, I just can’t believe they’ll leave it to chance that Delap continues to remain fit, and Hirst doesn’t break down again and can get some important goals.

Why give KM a massive new contract to keep him, and give us the best chance of stay up by having him, then not providing the tools required.

I’m gonna stop now before I cry

Yes, for all the good signings we made in the Summer that one left a jarring gap. We are fortunate Delap has had no more than a couple of minor niggles this season.

I'm quite confident we'll sign a better striker than AAH is at the moment, less so we'll get a better one than Hirst which is clearly the target.

We're also fortunate Delap has had the mother of seasons. We weren't quite expecting the levels he has been operating at.

Ferguson has the advantage of being U21 too, so frees a space in the squad; no idea what his relationship is like with Graham Potter, but if it's good you would think it makes West Ham favourites to sign him (unless Brighton think of them as a rival and block the move on those grounds)

I've mentioned elsewhere that (other than wages), the most straightforward signing of a striker we were linked with during the summer would seem to be Odsonne Édouard; out of favour at Leicester, and parent club Crystal Palace are looking to sell. Decent Prem experience - 30 starts, 7 goals season before last - but fits the profile of the job we ask of our No.9's.

Not sure we can get hold of Odsonne Édouard as im pretty sure he played for Palce before joining Foxes at begining of season.

I might be wrong though and he fits the calibre/profile of deal i imagine we would be looking at.

Ferguson on loan would be great!

We absolutely have to. We can't rely on Hirst staying fit and even if he does, we need that third option.

Also, I worry that Texty would otherwise explode.

If we are lucky, then Delap and Hirst are sufficient, but it would be reckless to plan to be lucky, so I am expecting someone to come in. Probably on loan, or a permanent with the expectation of replacing Delap next season. We can't afford anyone as good or better than Delap, so as long as Delap is here and fit, he will be starting ahead of anyone we bring in on a permanent.

That's actually a decent shout, I was thinking he'd be a great loan option alright; he's got the style of centre forward play we'd want & has come through elite acadamies.
Can't see Delap being let go before the end of this season though, but that wouldn't stop conversations taking place now & an agreement being reached whereby Guiu comes here for the rest of the season & even next season if/when we stay up, and they sign Delap in the Summer.
Guiu is highly rated & very young still; he would only come here on a loan if it was to happen.
All would depend on how badly they want Delap, which there appears to be some truth to.

Also one I was hoping for - Guiu is described as a pressing machine by teammates

I feel like this is an area where we doomed ourselves to the drop this year. Reading back through this forum in the summer and people were disappointed we didn’t get another striker in the summer but we’re hopeful it would be resolved in January. We’re now days away from ending the season with Delap and Hirst as the two forwards at the club.

At least I will get an away ticket and see Hazza Clarke start for us in August

It's weird to think that if (which is quite likely) we go down Harry Clarke and Fridge could well be going up. They may well have the last laugh.
