Imagine spending £120m and being a worse team than last year. on 17:28 - Feb 1 by NedPlimpton | Who from last year's side has been genuinely great in the prem?? |
None. But besides Delap aside and Cajuste / Szmodics (at times) the rest are just as sh*t. So why waste the £££?

Imagine spending £120m and being a worse team than last year. on 17:33 - Feb 1 by Illinoisblue | Take a look at the form table. Or consider we just lost at home to the second-worst team in prem history. And didn’t create a meaningful chance in the second half. |
OK but we didn't spend 120m to go backwards from the point you are citing. We spent 20m and had a hard run. I'm going to chalk this up to being upset post match because otherwise it's not making much sense. I can fully understand being upset. SB

Erm, to give ourselves the best possible chance?? Today was a massive blow but if Wolves lose we're still 1 point away from safety, which I personally would have taken at this stage of the season Al-Hamadi scored in the championship today, but look how completely out of depth he is in the premier league. That shows the size of the challenge our championship players face, so clearly we needed upgrading across the whole pitch! I honestly don't understand why people think that last season's squad would be performing better than we currently are

“so clearly we needed upgrading across the whole pitch!” This is the point. We have not done this, we’ve just thrown huge sums of money around replacing rather than upgrading. If we’re all so certain that players from a promotion winning Championship side wouldn’t be good enough why can we not grasp that players from mid table Championship teams wouldn’t be either.

I think we have upgraded but not to the level required, permanently, aside from Delap. Today was a Championship standard game and we seemed toothless up top and vulnerable at the back, which isn't encouraging.

Imagine spending £120m and being a worse team than last year. on 17:35 - Feb 1 by Sarge | Yes. Replaced quality like-for-like and lost all team cohesion and spirit along the way. Delap and Cajuste are the only two who have objectively improved us. |
It's simply not true that we've replaced quality like-for-like. It's a narrative which is spun but it's not the reality of the situation. SB

Please explain why you believe it isn’t true. In the main we have replaced players from a Championship team that finished second with players from Championship teams that finished mid table. With the exception of Delap and Cajuste who came from Serie A, none of them have displayed any discernible increase in quality than the players who were already here.
Imagine spending £120m and being a worse team than last year. on 18:49 - Feb 1 with 1165 views | itfc_statman | The recruitment has been poor and I see people blaming McKenna but ultimately we have Ashton and a recruitment department. It's all very well recruiting top championship talent but if you don't take into account context and how they fit into a system you may as well not bother. Most of our signings, particularly upon relegation, will have devalued. We will have limited scope to work in the window in the summer for a Championship season - saving grace might be the lack of quality likely to be in the Champs next season.

Imagine spending £120m and being a worse team than last year. on 17:15 - Feb 1 by ITFCSG | Saints spent far less than us this season and managed to beat us, something they failed to do last season. MA and McK has to answer for that. I want to see what cock and bull story McK comes up with today, Man City and Liverpool we expected results, but today was simply pathetic |
What a very simplistic view. Southampton were awful today. They don’t beat us because they are a better team.
Imagine spending £120m and being a worse team than last year. on 19:04 - Feb 1 with 1089 views | Smoresy | Like Luton did? That would have made for a fun 25/26. We haven't spent it well enough for this league but I'm confident our 'rating' has improved a good deal. My worry is if finances will allow us to use this squad at the much inferior level next season, or if we'll be stripped of all the best bits.

Realistically there's 6 changes from our best side last year to the one that started today Hladky for Muric Woolf and Burgess for O'Shea and Greaves Luongo for Cajuste Chaplin for Enciso Hirst for Delap Other than Hladky I think I'm ok with the changes made

Last season at home against Saints we were 2-1 down at HT, and its all guns blazing in the second half to push for the win. We went at the Saints goal wave after wave. AAH hit the post and Broadhead equalise. Today at HT it was 1-1 and yet we showed no sense of urgency to attack. If Saints were 2 or 3 down they'd capitulate. Instead it was more of the backwards and sideways passing once again like v City and Liverpool. It was almost as if the team had forgotten how to attack.

Would rather Hdlacky in goal then Muric To be honest would rather have kayden jackson and marcus Harness coming off the bench than Clarke and philonge both so lightweight...there is £60million saved....as others have said so many changes have upset the cohesion and may well have done the team spirit from the last 3 seasons... I know its different circumstances but reminiscent in some ways to 2001-2002 season...those that have done such good work to get us where we are quickly swept aside ....a clown keeper and the team spirit and cohesive teamwork ebbing away

I don't get the adoration of O'Shea. Decent but not worth the money we paid for him. Have a feeling if he was a player who came through the academy he wouldn't be getting the same credit.
