My weirdest take from yesterday 16:41 - Feb 2 with 10393 views | BaltachaFanClub | As I walked out of the ground, there was a sort of disagreement going on in front of me. There appeared to be a difference of opinion about who was at fault etc. I get it we are all frustrated, and some times it boils over. However, the weird bit is what the final comment shouted was…. “You can all F off back to Bury st Edmunds or wherever, now we are….” I couldn’t work out the last few words, but I feel this was an Ipswich resident abusing the non Ipswich residents. Is there a general feeling from inside the town that those of us from further afield are not as much of a part of the club? I have lived in suffolk my entire life. My family have been Town fans before me, and I was born in Ipswich Hospital, but growing up in Halesworth, and now living in Beccles, it doesn’t make me any less of a town fan than someone based in IP1. Welcome thoughts on this.

My weirdest take from yesterday on 20:34 - Feb 2 with 1679 views | TractorWood | Interesting. I'm from mid Suffolk, now live towards Cambridge. Never remotely felt treated any differently at any game home or away. I think we are cracking club. Followed England for a few qualifying campaigns and that is a different kettle of fish.

My weirdest take from yesterday on 20:34 - Feb 2 by SuffolkPunchFC | You really are just deliberately antagonistic, aren’t you. Ever since you crawled onto this forum. It seems to be this simple now... by sjg 15 Feb 2023 11:17If we believe in McKenna enough to tolerate this season's failure in the belief that in the long term he is the best man for the job, we keep hold of him.
If we want to get up this season (considering any effects that not getting promoted may have on our squad, losing key players etc.), then he has to go and quickly. |
Hahaha back to 2023 to find evidence of me being deliberately antagonistic, if it’s that bad why did you have to go back that far? Also held my hands up on this not long ago: So on McKenna's third anniversary at the club... by sjg 16 Dec 2024 10:44when did you realise we were onto something special? I'd love to tell you I knew when we played Gillingham a couple of weeks into his reign, but I was calling for his head after the Bristol Rovers draw so I will say my most recent doubts were thrown away when we beat Bolton away

Lol, ‘go back so far’. It’s literally your first ever post, and on the 2nd page. It jumps right out when looking at your posting history.

Okay? I’m not being deliberately antagonistic (and wasn’t there either, for the record) - I answered OPs question

What is weird about it? Generally it's professional teams that people support. In your life time how many fans of local non-professional teams have you ever come across - ones that dont follow a professional team at all?

Fair point, I think it’s weird for me as such a big part of it is that the main element of pride in where I am from is driven by the success of the football team, walking past the stadium every day and appreciating how lucky I am to have been brought up within 2 miles of the ground of arguably the most successful football club from a town as opposed to a city | | | | Login to get fewer ads
My weirdest take from yesterday on 21:24 - Feb 2 with 1369 views | Smoresy | I'm an Ipswich resident and look down on attitudes like sjg's, not those lovely blues who come and support from further afield lol. Would like to think I'm in the majority of town folk here! Pride of Anglia no less.

My weirdest take from yesterday on 20:18 - Feb 2 by sjg | There you go, you’ve defined it as ‘proper’. You’ve ignored Chelmsford, Colchester and gone to the nearest one that was successful at the time, not your local team |
When I was 8 I didn't know Chelmsford and Colchester had football teams.

My weirdest take from yesterday on 16:50 - Feb 2 by sjg | I do a bit, to be honest, but not always consciously. It does grate on me when those from Bury, Cambridge etc sing we support our local team when we play Man United et al I think it also goes the other way, there was a bloke from Cambridge the other week on Twitter (Town fan) slagging off Ipswich as a town |
Not wrong though are they. Ipswich is an awful place to live, the only good thing is the football team

My weirdest take from yesterday on 21:49 - Feb 2 with 1240 views | SomethingBlue | Ipswich is Suffolk’s club, it’s basically Suffolk FC - which is largely why it was such an attractive proposition to buy.

Historic Waterfront Pubs dating back to the 1600s More public parks per 1,000 population than anywhere in the country (try Holywells & Christchurch) Biggest Theatre in the East hosting major talent monthly Sandwiched between two AONB Less than 20 minutes to the beach 1 hour to London The best food scene it's had in years Try the guided Ipswich walks run by the tourism centre, will open your eyes to some hidden gems and lovely architecture. Granted other than the Cornhill, the strip of town centre isn't the best. But you're either dim or have never stepped foot in other towns if you don't rate Ipswich. [Post edited 2 Feb 22:12]

but as you say, compared to most other similar sized ex market towns it's okay. More going for it than against. Relatively. EDIT: I forgot how old I was... :) Point remains... Towen is okay relatively, more good than bad. [Post edited 2 Feb 21:58]

My weirdest take from yesterday on 22:00 - Feb 2 with 1161 views | jaseitfc2015 | I’m originally from Mildenhall , had a season ticket during the Royle era - I’ve always considered Town a county club and I think that’s something unique about us and them lot up the road … Now living in London, I think it’s cool to see it as the county’s club as the success of the last two seasons have sort of put Suffolk back on the map

I relate to this very strongly. It’s not to say who is a ‘better’ supporter, because I’m sure there are plenty of people all over the place who care very very strongly about the club, and in some cases invest a lot of money to getting to games. But when you live in the place, when success comes along there is that extra sense of’My God, this place really NEEDED this.’ There seems to be a spring in the step of everyone you pass in the street, whether they ‘go to the football’ or not.
My weirdest take from yesterday on 22:12 - Feb 2 with 1115 views | SuffolkPunchFC | For those that think the club only belongs to those in Ipswich, or even Suffolk, get ready for a crazy ride. The investors are building a recognisable franchise. They have their initial eyes on the immediate catchment area - which is Suffolk, north Essex, Cambridgeshire, south Norfolk. The pride of Anglia. But then beyond that - Internationally. They are already building the franchise brand in the US. It will take time - probably 5+ years, but expect to be rubbing shoulders with Town supporters from far and wide over the coming years. [Post edited 2 Feb 22:15]

I take your point, - but I wonder if people in Leicestershire (and perhaps even Northants) have the same feeling ? Or do they feel that it’s the cricket team that represents the county.
My weirdest take from yesterday on 22:38 - Feb 2 with 1054 views | hype313 | Unfortunately we have some really dim fans. I couldn't care less if you lived on Alderman Road or Old Kent road, as long as you love the club, geography doesn't play a part. We really do have some numpties kicking about.

Not sure - I think those counties are different to Suffolk & Norfolk in that in the East Midlands you’ve got loads of clubs close together - sure you’ve got Leicester > Leicestershire, Derby > Derbyshire etc but there’s a chance of living in a county there and being closer to another club and having more affinity with that club perhaps ? Side note Derby County is literally the club of the county !
My weirdest take from yesterday on 23:14 - Feb 2 with 961 views | TheBlueGnu | Well, the following all support Ipswich Town, despite their places of birth: Frances De La Tour - Hemel Hempstead Barbara Knox - Oldham Bill Roache - Nottingham Sheila Fern - Leicester Norman Eshley - Bristol Geoffrey Whitehead - Sheffield Dame Judy Dench - York Eileen Derbyshire - Urmston Brian Murphy - Ventnor
