My weirdest take from yesterday 16:41 - Feb 2 with 10073 viewsBaltachaFanClub

As I walked out of the ground, there was a sort of disagreement going on in front of me.
There appeared to be a difference of opinion about who was at fault etc.

I get it we are all frustrated, and some times it boils over.

However, the weird bit is what the final comment shouted was….

“You can all F off back to Bury st Edmunds or wherever, now we are….” I couldn’t work out the last few words, but I feel this was an Ipswich resident abusing the non Ipswich residents.

Is there a general feeling from inside the town that those of us from further afield are not as much of a part of the club?

I have lived in suffolk my entire life. My family have been Town fans before me, and I was born in Ipswich Hospital, but growing up in Halesworth, and now living in Beccles, it doesn’t make me any less of a town fan than someone based in IP1.

Welcome thoughts on this.

For those that think the club only belongs to those in Ipswich, or even Suffolk, get ready for a crazy ride. The investors are building a recognisable franchise. They have their initial eyes on the immediate catchment area - which is Suffolk, north Essex, Cambridgeshire, south Norfolk. The pride of Anglia. But then beyond that - Internationally. They are already building the franchise brand in the US.

It will take time - probably 5+ years, but expect to be rubbing shoulders with Town supporters from far and wide over the coming years.

When you consider our club shop etc and retail matchday turnover you'd think it was going well until you visit Anfield last week and see the mountains of stuff the "tourist fans " are gobbling up..... and as mentioned in the programme worldwide they are building superstores worldwide... thats what we are competing with so i can't help being proud of our Suffolk Club just achieving what we have inthe last 3 years.....But you can be sure Gamechanger are looking far beyond the borders of Suffolk and the surrounding counties as a catchment area... its why the Ed Sheeran connection has become so important.

Not wrong though are they. Ipswich is an awful place to live, the only good thing is the football team

I live in Ipswich and I think it's a brilliant town just sadly overlooked and talked down by people who prefer to go to Woodbridge and Bury.

As another poster has said, it's got a lot going for it.

I love walking past the ground each day I'm out.

Well, the following all support Ipswich Town, despite their places of birth:

Frances De La Tour - Hemel Hempstead
Barbara Knox - Oldham
Bill Roache - Nottingham
Sheila Fern - Leicester
Norman Eshley - Bristol
Geoffrey Whitehead - Sheffield
Dame Judy Dench - York
Eileen Derbyshire - Urmston
Brian Murphy - Ventnor

I always remember being in my local when a new couple moved to the village from Islington, they are both Arsenal fans.

The look on his wife’s face when the husband said ‘there are a lot of Town fans around this village and North Essex’. She just said ‘Ipswich’ in a surprising tone.

Another time a Colu fan in the pub telling me I should support them as it was closer, they were playing at Layer Road back then.I threw the old ‘well actually here in Benters we are closer to the Suffolk border than Layer Road’ and I have family in Suffolk and Dedham where you can P from one riverbank to the other, from one county to the next so to speak.

When I was an 8 year old, the nearest proper football teams were Ipswich to the north and West Ham to the south. I chose Ipswich. Almost 45 years ago. Hope that's ok with you.

Historic Waterfront
Pubs dating back to the 1600s
More public parks per 1,000 population than anywhere in the country (try Holywells & Christchurch)
Biggest Theatre in the East hosting major talent monthly
Sandwiched between two AONB
Less than 20 minutes to the beach
1 hour to London
The best food scene it's had in years
Try the guided Ipswich walks run by the tourism centre, will open your eyes to some hidden gems and lovely architecture.

Granted other than the Cornhill, the strip of town centre isn't the best. But you're either dim or have never stepped foot in other towns if you don't rate Ipswich.

A thriving and growing local music scene too, thanks to Brighten the Corners, with the smokehouse, St Stephen’s Church and the Baths all hosting a wide range of bands.
6 Music interviewed Joe Bailey last week during independent venue week, as an example of a town that is moving forwards.

Judy Dench (whoever she is) may well support Ipswich, but Dame Judi Dench is well known to be an Everton supporter.

I can hear the crowd at Old Trafford from my abode, was born in Cambridgeshire, but I only support one team. I follow a few others. But am a True Blue - since 1973.

Never lived in Ipswich, only Suffolk.

Some excellent kibbutz round Back Hamlet, Chico, very similar to allotments at first glance.

Er no, that is not the case at all.

The town has always had very strong supporters branches in both Bury (used to take a double decker to all away games), Halesworth (had their own coach to aways), Saxmundham, Clacton-On-Sea, Sudbury. In fact in the good old days when the North stand was indeed the North stand, people used to be very vocal about what specific part of Suffolk they came from.

Was a bus from Haverhill as well.
Though shoulda been supporting West Spam or Cambridge I guess

Was that specifically people heading to the football from there, or just taking any bus they could to get out of Haverhill?

Was the Saturday Burtons Coaches mystery tour. Would slowly tour the more culturally deprived areas of Suffolk, like Clare, Melford and Sudbury before finely arriving at Portman Road in time for a burger

In the 70's and early 80s Lowestoft branch had two coaches travel to home games.... one mainly for terrace fans and a later one for seated supporter's.

Like others living in Lowestoft, I have been a regular at Portman Road since the mid 60's. I would argue (but not seriously) that us travelling supporters are MORE dedicated than Ipswich based fans.

But scanning this thread, what I'm most proud about is that the word "fanbase" has not been used once. OOOps!

My take is that some Ipswich residents get fed up with the flak the town gets from people who live literally just outside. You hear comments from people living in BSE , Woodbridge even Kesgrave that they never bother going to Ipswich because it is a dump. However they obviously do 'risk' it for the football.

I would imagine it's a reaction to that. "Ipswich is a dump but we're all Ipswich when the footie is going well".
[Post edited 2 Feb 17:01]

The 'Ipswich is a dump' type comment has always seemed odd to me. With respect to the pretty rural areas of Suffolk or say York, yes it is not the prettiest town and has areas badly in need of development. I had a friend who makes such comment and lives near Derby...

But in many ways it is like most other average UK towns in the past couple decades, suffering from cuts to funding, increase in violent crime (cant quote stats mind) and other socio economics changes evident in rest of the the country.

Get the impression people who always say that have only ever lived in very affluent or rural areas...

My Haverhill bus experience would have been from same period of time. Just the 1 coach though. Seated supporters at the front of the bus, terrace fans at back.
Was like a Haverhill supporters bus apartheid

Sadly doesn't surprise me at all.

I documented my daughters experience on here after the Leicester game when her northern accent was picked up and was challenged as to her entitlement for tickets. She has been a Town follower with me for over 20 years. She has only known the bad times.

Even at the train station after wards we had some right idiots goading ageing Leicester fans.

In truth we are not a comfortable supporter base at all in my experience.
