Mates tried to get in a pub called the Yew Tree after someone on twitter suggested it, weren’t allowed in even though it was empty inside, Villa fans on Twitter suggest it’s down to the police. Know some managed to get in one called the Barton Arms but that was a 30 min walk from where we parked and then 30mins back to the ground, not worth it for one pint

Never liked the city of Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Always had an uncomfortable aura. And much of it looks like it’s well overdue some regeneration, with grimy relics of years gone by just sitting there decaying. Awful place. I don’t usually like the chant “xxxx is a shhthole, I want to go home”, but sometimes it’s very apt.

Yep, get what you mean, never the best vibe around there and as you said it’s always dull and grey whenever we go to the midlands, grim up North innit.

In fairness, the centre of Birmingham has had quite the face-lift in recent years.

Glad I’m not alone with those thoughts about the West Midlands. For anyone arriving by rail the grim platforms of Birmingham New Street sum up the place.

When did you last go to Birmingham New Street? It's had a huge redevelopment. Birmingham is a great city to live in, with very friendly locals. Aston Villa's ground is in one of the most deprived areas. Birmingham City's ground is also in a deprived area, but with the added disadvantage of being in a post-industrial wasteland in a deprived area. City centre for pubs, then train out to the ground would have been the best bet. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

St. Andrews is a dump, by far the worst out of the lot, half empty, terrible atmosphere and food + the persistent fog there makes the atmosphere even worse
What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 22:56 - Feb 15 with 4529 views | Churchman | Not been to the Birmingham grounds in many years. Back in the70s/80s/90s Villa was a terrific ground, Wolves (90s. Cup game) was good though the area truly desperate and the police awful, Hawthorns nice, St Andrews scary and thoroughly unpleasant. Regardless I’ve been to Birmingham a good few times over the years and the centre has improved beyond recognition. It’s fine. Edgebaston is a wonderful cricket ground too.

We tried to get in there and they turned us away. We then ordered an Uber to go to the tennis court pub which was ok to be fair. Whilst waiting for the Uber some villa fans went past and some 60 year old said “tell You what. Mick mills is still a c**t and walked off”. Weird bloke, only thing he said to us. And then the yew tree stewards came over and said we could now go in. Too late we said. Looked a dump as well. As you say a very poor welcome compared to what they get at ipswich

What did Mick Mills ever do to annoy them? Talk about holding a grudge haha.

Birmingham city centre is great for pubs, bars and restaurants...and shops but don’t tell the wife. Stayed there last week for Coventry game too. Aston / Witton is a craphole. Tried to get in 3 pubs near the ground all of which required a minimum of £3 to actually get through the front door. Can’t recall ever coming across such blatant opportunism at any other away game. So I thought I’d leave it and have one at the ground instead….er yeah think again. No booze in the away end and no room behind the stand in what was little more than a corridor so narrow it would be impossible to get out quickly in the event of an emergency. I’m sure when I went to Villa years ago we were behind the goal facing the Holte End. Definitely best to drink in Brum before the game and get the last possible train you can to the game. Fantastic result but terrible overall match day experience
What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 23:20 - Feb 15 with 4346 views | sjg | Managed to get into the Witton Arms outside the ground. Not that any of us said a word until we found a spot in the corner where no one could hear our accents. I think the right amount of hostility is good to be honest, the lack of pub near the ground is annoying but infinitely preferable to an atmosphere like Fulham’s

Mick Mills was Birmingham City manager for a while, and is pretty straight talking. It was a long time ago, though, but the hardcore Villa v Bluenose hate is incredibly strong. The age of the person who said that to you puts him makes old enough to associate Mick Mills primarily with Ipswich, before he became Brum manager.

These pubs are only welcoming to villa fans on a Saturday. Good luck in most of them during the week. I speak as someone who lived there for a year as a student. Terrifying pubs.

Went to The Wellington as suggested on here... 17 real ales, chatted with a Villa fan and a brief chat with Chesterfield fan who obviously mentioned Paul Cook.... for the record my beer of choice was Pig on the Wall. Had a good day

A far superior chant is ‘you have to live here, we get to go home.’
| They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 01:26 - Feb 16 with 3845 views | The_Romford_Blue | Probably told this story at the time on one of my Rommy reports. Villa away was the only place after a game (until Sheff wed away last year when they starting lamping town fans) I’ve felt genuinely uncomfortable and under threat. Me and two of my uni mates did a lot of away games in the year we went down. Villa being one of them. At least 15 that year we did I’d say. Both were Arsenal fans (one sadly died since). Anyway after the game we had an hour and a half til our train and popped in a pub seeing as it was freezing cold. We’d just lost comfortably (think Tammy Abraham scored a couple for them from memory). We walked in the boozer and it went eerily quiet. All Villa fans in there. One of them turns to me across the bar and goes ‘didn’t I see you in the away end fella’. He was obviously saying that as I was stood there in an Ipswich coat. As he said that, two more of them walked across as if to square up to us while another opened the doors to say ‘get the f**k out of this pub now’. Was genuinely uncomfortable. My Arsenal mates thought it be ironic that they’d never had any trouble with Arsenal despite one of them doing multiple games across Europe in the champions league and spurs away 5 times, and yet the place we nearly got punched was an Ipswich game away at Aston Villa of all places. Bunch of Brummy c**ts. | |

Yes, the away end used to be the lower tier behind the goal opposite the Holte End.

What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 07:35 - Feb 16 with 3428 views | ITFC_Forever | Just remembered another incident at Villa from 1994 when we won 1-0 with a Gavin Johnson goal. Got the train at Witton to back to New Street and a Villa fan starts threatening us. Thankfully the train turned up at the right time and we lost him in the scrum to get on. Thought we’d shaken him off and bumped into him again at New Street. Managed to edge ourselves away and made sure we kept a good distance from him with some policemen between us and him for good measure.
