….what do you think his punishment should have been?

I was expecting more.

What I don't understand is that he said the player had given consent yet the report says "He described the kiss as an "act of affection", adding that in the moment it was "something completely spontaneous"."

If it was completely spontaneous how did she give consent?

I'm quite unclear how something can be both a spontaneous act, AND something that you can be sure someone has given their consent for (assuming you've never done it to them before).

I suppose with his level of arrogance he probably thinks everyone is stupid.

Losing his job is probably a more severe blow to him than the fine, and one would like to think that his career will not exactly be the same again. But yes, he will almost certainly be celebrating. In an inappropriate manner, doubtless.

I’d have thought there is an argument for prison given the fact it’s a sexual offence, but as I said £10k seems light. Especially to a man as high up as him.

Would have expected a much heavier fine and some sort of community order equivalent.

I think you're right.

The guilty verdict is what people seemed to have wanted, and losing his job and presumably a significant proportion of future earnings will have hit him hard financially.

His name has been permanently tarnished too.

FWIW, I think it probably was a spontaneous act, but incredibly stupid on his part.

It’s undoubtedly light, I wonder if the judge/s were m or f.

At least global public shame and opprobrium followed from his offence.

I honestly think it is mad that this has ended up as a trial covered all over the world.

What he did was offensive and stupid, but if he'd held his hand up and properly apologised at the time, rather than doubling down and trying to bring the weight if the Spanish FA behind him, then that would probably have been that.

Instead, it became much bigger than the incident itself, and here we are.

He hasn't helped himself with the whole consent thing, he should have just said I was celebrating with her, I kissed her, i shouldn't have done, i've apologised and resigned and hope she can forgive me for getting caught up in the emotions.

To be fair, if it was in the midst of jubilant celebrations I would be happy with the outcome that has been given, for the reasons I stated earlier in the thread.

He was sacked, found guilty, had his life turned upside down etc etc. I wouldn't expect prison.

He wasn't responsible for the social media 'death threats'.

He has clearly lied and coerced following sexual aggression and the punishment doesn't even amount to a slap on the wrist.

Not particularly surprising given previous behaviour from Spanish courts but I expect there will be some serious fallout this time.

He was acquitted of the coercion charge, so the punishment wouldn't take that into account.

If you can’t see why the prosecution wanted it, especially in light of afterwards then it’s no surprise you’re surprised.

As I said I can see the argument for it, particularly in the setting precedent element of the case. The spotlight on abuse of power/sex in a world after #metoo changes things significantly from when we grew up.

Had he shown immediate remorse and regret I think the whole thing would have been very different. The fact he’s been fined so little almost vindicates the biggest critics of the whole affair.

Happy to agree to differ.

I think a heavier fine would have been appropriate, but certainly not prison.

That wouldn't be a good precedent to set in my view.

Its OK to disagree.

You seem to be trying to convince yourself there. I mean having clearly misread my first post and not realising I wasn’t advocating he go to prison.

We seem to be on the same page then. 😊

"If it was completely spontaneous how did she give consent?" Honest answer - if it's genuinely reciprocal. Didn't seem to be in this case
