So much to look forward to already:

Stay up and we will be much stronger with all the fun that brings.

Go down and we will be a real power in the Championship with the fun that brings.

The biggest disappointment is that people in the wider world who have no real interest in/ knowledge about us will just think we are rubbish.

One thing I’m looking forward to is not hearing - from fans of all clubs - how the premier league is corrupt because a refereeing decision goes against them. No VAR nonsense, either.

Confidence is huge. Right now, we have very little.
I’m not hugely confident next season will be what some seem to think it will be.

And... remember where we've come from.

It will be fun again tho nice to celebrate some wins again.

....we are rubbish though, that's why we are getting relegated, to deny that is just silly.

We've also had more than our fair share of OTT plaudits over the last couple of seasons. Seasons in which, whilst we got promoted, we weren't the best team in the league on either occasion.

It's best not to worry too much about what other people think and just draw your own conclusions.

This season I’ve rarely bothered with highlights or Town in 5. It’s not a lot of fun.

I remember getting relegated with Burley and thinking we’d walk the league. Deckchairs and all that.

It is disturbing how much of an effect this season had.

I've gone from watching town in 5. Videos of training. Ashton talk etc. To just wanting the season to hurry up and finish so I can get back to enjoying football again.

Precisely. For every club that goes straight back up (Newcastle, Villa, Fulham, Sheff Utd etc) there are also many that are stuck in Championship mediocrity (WBA, Hull, Cardiff, Boro etc) and in the worst case scenario, go straight down again (Luton - possibly, Sunderland, Charlton etc). Back-to-back promotions exist, but so do back-to-back relegations!

The “optimism” of many regarding our impending relegation smacks of the same optimistic delusion many had when we were relegated to League One. For all the confidence of pissing League One and going down for a “League One tour” remind me how many seasons we were there for?

Moral of the story: there is no guarantee in football

Same. And it’s not just the losing it’s the fact it’s almost impossible for promoted sides to compete. We could have spent 500m and still be way off what’s required. The pyramid is an illusion now. The top is sealed off.

I don’t know really, had we made better signings I think we have a fighting chance of staying up

That’s a fair point; signing a decent keeper in the summer instead of getting mugged off on the Muric deal would have helped. (Side note: not enough is made of the fact we signed Muric on the advice of goalkeeper.com analysts - and then signed into a longterm agreement with them - and their head analyst bloke only professional experience was working at Tesco. This is all facts, and available on LinkedIn. Red flag anyone?)

Only thing I’m not looking forward if we go back down is the blasted 12:30 Saturday kick offs which I’m sure we will have loads of.

I think we’re going to end up with egg on our faces. The better players will be sold, the players from before will be older, some improved some a touch too old, and the players we’ve brought in didn’t manage promotion with their respective clubs last season. The idea we are going straight back up at present is simply self soothing over the fact we haven’t had a good season and are going down with sub 30 points.

I'm not convinced confidence is that low tbh. Maybe among fans. We looked right up for Spurs yesterday and were just undone by better quality, which is the familiar tale. I'd be surprised if the group don't believe in their abilities against Championship opposition.

Luton may provide caution I guess, but how similar has our approach been? They came up through the playoffs with 80 points and then spent a record low on improvements. Our story is so much closer to Burnley's or Sheffield United's, both in how we dominated the Championship and then spent afterwards.

Sheffield United conceded over 100 goals last season and finished on 16 points. We aren't being slaughtered each week like they were, and every Championship side outside the top four would love to be able to field most of our players. Harry Clarke instantly slotted into the starting XI of the second best team in the league. George Edmundson probably has played the most minutes in central defence for Middlesbrough this season. These are players who couldn't make McKenna's bench after additions.

There will never be another's season like last year....it was all the more fun because it was so unexpected and on the whole impossible not to be amazed we in week out!
I won however miss VAR in the slightest.... more than happy to let incompetent refs fully take the flak!

There are no guarantees of course, however I'm reassured by the fact that very recently, our 2nd eleven (most of whom will still be here next season if we are relegated) comfortably defeated Coventry away.

That's if we are relegated of course, and there's no guarantee of that.

We've not been rubbish. Southampton have been rubbish. Leicester recently. Not good enough ultimately, granted. We've been the wrong side of fine margins and only needed a couple of those to go our way for our season to take on a different complexion.

We've also deserved the plaudits, certainly for last season. What we achieved in amongst those big hitters from the Premier League who to all intents and purposes would've just strolled back to the Premier League was extraordinary.

Don’t for gods sake look forward to going down , we had a good team last time we went down to the championship with a good manager and we just disappeared in to league 1.

My OP said, in my view, whether we stay up or not I feel we have a lot to look forward to. Either outcome is possible at the moment.

We're a very different beast now, top to bottom.

Not saying we'll walk the league, but i'm confident we'll win more than we lose....and I'm happy to go watch that!

Expectation will be greater next season, and patience lower, should we go down. Let alone Luton, I think the fans will start to turn if we're fighting in the play offs rather than comfortably being in the top two at this stage. And, in fairness, the defence this season has always (rightly) been financial. Considering the amount we have spent on this squad, and investment we should be able to make in the summer due to sales, we should dominate the league next year, particularly if Burnley, Leeds and Sheffield United go up.

Whether we will is another matter altogether.
