Do you ever look at your surroundings and the people in it and wonder when.... 21:07 - Mar 5 with 2982 viewsBanksterDebtSlave

.....it and they all became so relentlessly miserable looking. Of hundreds of people I observed on a trip to the shops this evening I think I saw one smile....she was looking at her phone!

Where has the joy gone? Maybe it's just me!

I don't mean to be that guy but life is miserable as it ever has been right now.

People are struggling in general, no wage growth, no investment in towns and cities that benefit people, COL, mental health crisis, it's winter (early spring) and in general people are more unfriendly. The lack of hope I guess.

I am unfortunately one of those miserable c units mopping around so don't judge me!

I know. I'm forever smiling and saying hello to people I don't know to increase the sum of human happiness (or frighten people). It's radically different out of town and when folk aren't glued to those awful life-sucking phone thingies though.

Just because someone doesn’t have a smile etched on their faces doesn’t mean that they aren’t happy. Maybe they are just too busy thinking about what to have for tea or other things to smile for the cameras. Or maybe they are just too tired after being at work and simply want to go home.

Lol, so yeah that's me too, the annoying person chatting to total strangers. Thing is I'm mostly in the sticks too and the misery is definitely spreading. It's almost like society doesn't really care about people now just so long as we're greasing the cogs of big business.

I'm a taxi driver and the amount of people who just sit in the back glued to their phones is phenomenal. 15 years ago the vast majority would sit in the front, Covid obviously had an affect but it seems to be accelerating. That said more people are using cash than they were a couple of years ago

It's getting to laid-back me now.
I was in the supermarket and I'd taken advantage of an offer and when I looked at the receipt I saw I hadn't got it.
The woman at customer services was saying there wasn't an offer and No, she wasn't going to check the aisle.
Usually I would say "Can I speak to your supervisor" but I did the veiled insult thing of saying "Can I speak to an adult". Fireworks and expletives.
I know, I shouldn't have but I wanted my £1.30something discount.
I did see the supervisor and she refunded the money but the other woman was standing there giving me black looks.
I didn't apologize 'cos my attitude was f*** 'em.
I'm not usually like this.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Although I do live in a village that has grown considerably these last ten years, most people are still happy and most speak.

Some of the newbies look at like you are bonkers when you say ‘mornin’ or ‘good morning’,but on the whole people are happy. But over time people do come round.

I do try to keep out of Colchester as like many towns it’s crap now,and that’s pretty miserable 😩.

How different it is in a French village, a real sense of community, daily greetings, endless Bonjour & smiles, groups chatting,  genuine interest in what you are up to. Communes and mayors invest in lots of social, cultural happenings.

As an OAP now I've had to come to terms with being less agile. My experiences in supermarkets are increasingly ones of "get out of my way old timer". The lack of politeness and indeed simple kindness has diminished. One of the few stores left with some manners both in staff and shoppers seems to have Partners. The trouble is can I afford to shop there?

Whenever I venture into London it always amuses me just how miserable commuters appear to be with their lot.

Does kind of beg the question why do it if it makes you so flipping miserable!

But as someone else has said, just because they aren't smiling doesn't mean they're miserable. It would be more odd if people were just randomly smiling on their way to work. Bare in mind most of them do that exact route every day for years, it's hardly going to evoke surprise or joy.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

No it’s no just you. Mrs C and I were discussing exactly the same thing when we were out last week.

Is it just a perception of age or was it always like that? I don’t know. I am not the cheeriest looking soul myself and once working in London people buried their heads in Evening Standards before mobiles.

What I do notice is how scruffy everything looks, how people are staring at their little phones all the time. My mate does it in the pub but has stopped doing it because he knows it annoys me. I have adopted the routine that if I’m with someone and they start messaging or hissing around with their toy I stop talking. Over time they get the message.

Anyway, yes, I think some are obsessed with their own lives and don’t truly look. The news is relentlessly negative, sensationalist and distorted.. The country has faced 14 years of tory assault in the fabric of society followed by months of doom and gloom from Starmer’s mob. It’s the end of winter which has been a cold one.

In other words a combination of things. To counterpoint this, it is only a year and a bit since my father died. The kindness shown during his illness and after was humbling. Same with Mrs Cs illness last year. Amongst the vileness of plenty including the Trumps of this world, there is kindness, laughter and smiles even in the toughest of times.

Just remember - ‘you’re never fully dressed without a smile’ 🙂

I was thinking the same only yesterday.

It was a glorious sunny day but the people out shopping looked so dowdy, grey and miserable.

Admittedly, they were mainly in their 50s and older so maybe it's an age thing. After all, there's a reason for the expression "grumpy old men", or old codgers as I like to call them.

And before I get accused of ageism, I'm 65 myself.

Thing is, the older you get the more things sag - including your face. So unless you're actually smiling most old people look grumpy anyway, even if they're not.

That's a good point about still seeing the best in people when the chips are down.
Also sorry to be the harbinger of doom but as of next week it's going to be a cold Spring too.

I’m going back around 25 years, but when I was 16-18 I worked at a supermarket as a weekend job. Found it quite amusing the number of times people (mainly people in their 50s plus) got so angry over small things.

When I first started I was amazed at how long staff there held on to grudges with certain customers- was quite amusing though.

So yesterday gave the back lawn a strim and raked out a fair bit...

Thinking of going all in and hiring a stacifier this year - proper deal with the moss / dead grass etc.

Best time to do it?

Similar here in Spain, we actually had friends over this weekend from Sheerness who actually commented how the way of life here seems more relaxed and everyone seems happier and more friendly( my wife and I both still work full time) so it's not just an easier retired life in the sun!

In Hertfordshire it's noticeable how towns vary. In one or two towns virtually everyone looks miserable and does everything possible not to catch anyone else's eye. It has nothing to do with how wealthy the town is. Harpenden town centre is miserable; however in the big park there some folk actually speak.

My wife's cousin from Chingford is always amazed how many folk speak and smile when she visits St Albans. Many smiles and hi's from folk of Afro-Caribbean family origin among others.

Yeah. I really noticed the other day how young people interact with instagram obsessively. It was in Germany and they were enjoying themselves but in a train ride it’s not an exaggeration to say one lad took 50 to 100 photos of his girlfriend. Then they were scrolling through their friends uploads. Technology is out of hand. It’s too central to how people want to project themselves and it’s not healthy.

I’m ill in bed and watched endless you tube stuff on trump yesterday which left me lower than a snakes belly.
