Well, it looks like most of you lot won’t be visiting America any time soon.

https://news.sky.com/story/scientist-denied-entry-to-us-after-messages-critical-

I should be ok though having never uttered a word against the odious, deranged, orange shtgibbon. Hail Trump!!

It’s the hypocrisy of people who (rightly) criticise trump for pushing back on free speech when we know full well given the chance they’d support doing the exact same thing only to different people.

Which of your three replies will this get?

You are being a touch disingenuous.

Any of us who are middle aged have grown up with the USA as the "leader of the Free World", staunchly proud of it's Constitutional Right to Free Speech, and emphasis on Democracy.

In addition, it's Iconography supporting this includes the Statue of Liberty, which implores the world to "give me your poor", and the last line of the song they love singing at every opportunity is "In the land of the free, and the hole of the brave."

We have consumed as much US media output as UK for decades, and our stories as nations have intertwined for the whole of our lives.

So when that all gets thrown in the air by a President, it is more worthy of note to a British audience than Aung in Myanmar/Burma going from being a darling of freedom to repressive as soon as she gained power, for example.

When I visit the US, which I really enjoy, I go there for other reasons than politics! I'm not in the slightest concerned about who is President but I have always respected whoever it might be, & that wouldn't be any different now!

I would actually be worried about going there now. Their entry visa thing now asks you to lists online handles, and they seem to be locking people up for weeks without trial in shackles for not being American.

Meanwhile, Musk is suggesting that its Europe that has an issue with free speech. The story you quote is plainly unconstitutional. But none of the mechanisms of state appear to be dealing with it.

All that stuff was in place during Bidens time, its not new, and yep opinions have consequences, a life lesson worth learning.

Absolutely we should criticise trump for disregarding free speech. Even more so since as you say it goes against the US’s mythology and claims to champion such things. But my point about hypocrisy still stands - some people will criticise trump but only really differ in terms of free speech as to who they would choose to silence.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

It asked that when I got my ESTA for a trip to NY back in August but it’s an optional field. I have no idea why anyone would fill it out.

Going back there in 2 weeks to Tennessee this time. Not remotely looking forward to it anymore but can’t get a refund so just going to go and get it over with.

I live in California and don’t see anything changed here. Nothing to be concerned about for now traveling to any USA city. The best cities to visit are Palm Springs/Joshua Tree, New Orleans, Monterey/Carmel and Washington DC in my opinion. Manhattan has a vibe that everyone should catch once in their life but a visit is not essential.

New travel rules are being administered by many countries including UK and world travel will change over next 6 months. To enter UK now you need prior permission and you have to pay an entry tax.

Some more on free speech...
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/21/oil-protest-activism-greenpeace-

“If companies can sue critics, advocates and protesters into oblivion for their speech and the unlawful acts of third parties, then no one will feel safe protesting corporate malfeasance,” Hauss said.
Amnesty International said the “devastating verdict sets an array of deeply damaging precedents on the rights to freedom of speech, association and peaceful protest and puts the very future of Greenpeace at risk”.

You mean like most normal people would do?

Imagine the wife saying she’d love to go to place X and you’re reply is ‘honey I just can’t the politics in the country are too much for me to comprehend’

Or being on your death bed ‘a place I wanted to visit was the US, but I didn’t, you know… Trump’

😂 ridiculous

hopefully it goes to appeal - it reads as if they have strong grounds for appeal. as reported it certainly sounds chilling to free speech and reprehensible - but the article and the previous one which is linked isn't really explicit about what the company's claim involved or what the facts of the case were. having a jury drawn from the oil industry seems to guarantee the outcome however.

Yer need to fit a gun rack to the back of the pick up to really finish off the look. Perhaps weld up the doors so yer have to chamber through the window like a Duke boy

Maybe add a CB radio like they had in Convoy. Obviously you’ll need a handle like Rubber Duck or Pigpen. One for you to ponder

It always amazes me when you watch the news and those foreign chaps all have Japanese Pickup trucks, then they mount a big old gun in the back!

I mean how you supposed to get your gardening gear in with that in the way !?

As there's no football today, would be nice if Benters/Rubber Duck could lead a Convoy of gapped tooth pick up drivers and truckers through the back roads of North Essex. Preferably with a few smokies on his tail in order to replicate the greatest movie ever made.

They clearly haven't thought it through. In the rush to pack the big gun theve barely got room for a few shovels etc. Gonna end up making 2 trips..

Smokies headed up by Dirty Lyle of course!

Loved every minute of it; brilliant film! As for the CW McCall song I’ll be humming it in my head all day now:

By the time we got into Tulsa Town
We had eighty-five trucks in all
But they's a road block up on the clover leaf
And them bears was wall to wall
Yeah, them smokies was thick as bugs on a bumper
They even had a bear in the air
I says, callin' all trucks
This here's the Duck
We about to go a huntin' bear

Poetry at its finest!

Is an absolute classic. Yer that theme song is going nowhere today. Just around and around in our heads. I'm off to a mates house at the top of a semi mountain in a short while. Gonna play Convoy all the way up there. Seems fitting.
That's the kinda poetry the likes of that gobsh1te Shakespeare could only dream of.

Sadly, for many the footballification of political discussion has taken a complete hold, and it's about supporting the team not the principle. Happens on all sides, but the inability to hold a logically consistent position on these issues really weakens debate.

Corbyn egged Vs Farage's milkshake is another example. So many people celebrated one, called for serious action on the other. The only consistent position is to either think both are okay or both are wrong - but as soon as you take a nuanced view in the middle both sides criticise you for defending the other.
