So Rachael Reeve gets free concert ticket 07:53 - Mar 24 with 7326 viewsonceablue

Subjecting everyone else to hardship but she gets to go to a free concert in a corporate box that I guess would be in the region of £1,000 for 2 people if not more.

And then openly admits she couldn’t pay for them on TV but will declare their value

Her PR person must have to permanently carry a shovel round with them

It’s like declaring their value makes it Ok

There is certain things unfortunately you can’t do when you are in a position like hers. Ask Mike Bassett😂😂😂

Also you wouldn’t need security if you hadn’t upset so many people with your lies

It may be seen, by some, as a perk of the job but I would say it is a responsibility that needs to be discharged wisely.

Big fan of all the Labour Lads on here backing their girl for doing stuff we all know they would be wetting their knickers over if it was Sunak or Hammond not so long ago.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I'd say that the majority of natural Labour supporters who have commented on this thread have been more critical of her on balance than those who I wouldn't have down as Labour supporters.

Indeed, but let's not let reality get in the way of a good old fashioned narrative.

Agreed. There’s nothing wrong about taking gifts if it’s allowed (and properly declared of course). Sometimes a little bit of discretion doesn’t go amiss, especially given her recent announcements of cuts.

It’s a weird thing to go after her for. I’d have thought her mind-numbingly unimaginative approach to macroeconomics would be a better target.

I'm less worried about Rachel Reeves playing the game in the current system and more worried about how our system is set up so that gifts/money buys you influence and/or access to those who govern us.

Indeed, I would be far more concerned about the archaic, inherently corrupt honours system , from peerages downwards.

I must have missed the outrage when the Tories were doing it and fast tracking their mates for CoVid contracts etc but I guess that is just expected with Conservatives?

Not to mention the serious issue of the Tory govt's vested interests in the oil & gas industries, whilst simultaneously promoting highly polluting, environmentally damaging, uneconomic in the UK (due to geography & geology), fracking -

That's been the way since money was invented, and probably before that with bartering!

Absolutely. It’s all about why you are receiving something and what does that person want in return? It maybe a ‘thank you’ or a ‘build a relationship’ thing but it’s your problem if you become beholding to somebody because of Arsenal tickets or whatever. If you’ve been bought and paid for, good luck with that.

The private sector? No problem what people and companies give. There are plusses and minuses to it having experienced it and whatever a companies policy might be, stick to it.

For people working in the public sector, it’s totally different. You should expect nothing and get nothing and if you do it should be declared. I know people do, depending on what they do, but in my time and the nature of my job meant I never saw any ‘perks’ of any kind. I made damn sure that any expenses were receipted and within the rules too.

Regarding tories and Labour I don’t care. There’s a line and if an individual steps over it with one toe, they may as well take everything they can entitled or not. They’re all bent to me. If it’s something that is within the rules like a Taylor Swift ticket and they declare it, fine. No problem. But they cannot complain if they get leant on to make a dodgy Russian a peer or hammered in the media for exercising privilege and accused of one rule for them and a single digit for the plebs.

I’ll never understand why high profile people put themselves in that position. Pure greed, I suppose.

For all his supposed brilliance, this is something that Morgan McSweeney should have put a stop too after the issue dominated the early weeks of the new government.

And nice to hear Matthew Pennycock (a Labour minister) showing some principles in an interview with Nick Ferrari

"I don't personally think it's appropriate - if I want to go to a concert at the O2, I'll pay for it.

EDIT: I also came across this

Heidi Alexander, said she was too busy to take freebies. She said she had “never accepted tickets to any concerts or anything like that” as an MP..

I don’t think ‘well the last lot were worse at the trough’ or ‘it’s convention’ is any excuse. Set the rules. If MPs don’t think it’s fair they can’t take free stuff, bribes, favours, cash for questions, they can always resign and do something else.

Clear rules. Cross the line and it’s see you later. Nice and simple.
