I really hope we have got it right with Philogene 03:14 - Apr 6 with 4218 views

Doubling down and paying 22M for a player whose best position appears to be the same as Jack Clarke’s who we have already spent 15M on. We must think the ceiling is very high because when we done the deal there was obviously a very good chance of us playing championship football next season. I’m assuming both will be here for 25/26. We shall see.

I do wonder whether he will be with us next season.

Could it be a deal like Villa did last season when they 'sold' Cameron Archer to Sheff Utd. It was effectively a loan disguised as a permanent transfer.

We seem to get too fixated on certain players.

At this moment one can only assume he was bought for next season to replace Hutch?

That said as you say we have Jack Clarke who I think will be my favourite player next season once he gets a starting place week in, week out.

Ditto the signing of Ben Scumfrey what was that all about?

I really hope they learn we need to buy players to actually fit into and improve the team this summer.

The Godfrey lessons are:-

Never buy a player with a Norwich connection
Never buy a player mid season in the PL who has only played 20 minutes so far in the season as by default they aren't match fit.

Philogene is still the strange purchase for me. Although I think he was bought with both eyes on the Championship. But I will be shocked if all 3 of Hutch, Clarke, and Philogene are still here next season.

I think philogene has been a big mistake unfortunately, it’s no good coming good in a lower league when we are likely to be the team on the front foot and the team that has most possession. I would expect a fairly decent £1 mil player to be good then. We needed some one good in the premier league which philogene and a few others blatantly aren’t. He’s not quick enough, he’s not big enough, gives the ball away a lot and his one trick from the left to cut inside on his right is taken away by not playing him there. Either way deffo not a player anywhere close to the money paid for him im afraid. On the right where McKenna keeps trying to play him, he is no where as good as Hutchinson and doesn’t have the pace of burns or ogbene who I would rather us playing on the right. I wouldn’t mind him on the left but out of game time so far Clarke has looked better the times I have seen him play. I want him to be good but unfortunately he will never live up to the valuation so will always be maligned, same as muric.

Said this pretty much in another post, international players are not going to want to be bench players in the championship even if as many predict we will walk the league.

Godfrey was signed to cover Tuanzebe's injury and instantly became our most experienced PL player in the squad. Regrettably he wasn't at the level required, but I'm not sure we should have known this. He's barely played for Atalanta but they're a top team.

£22m felt extravagant for Philogene at the time, given his struggles at this level in a much better team. I was shocked that Villa had managed to turn a profit on him tbh. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing him kick on with us next season.

we have to remember every time he does something that looks silly or daft or makes a mistake, hes still quite a young player, only just passed 100 senior appearances, with only 21 of those in the Premier League.

we have players on our team with over 500 senior appearances, tons of experience, and they still make mistakes.

so we need to cut him some slack imo, dampen down the expectations that he's going to bang goals in for fun at this level, especially in a team who dont create many chances.

We also have Ogbene to come back, they're all going to be very useful in the Championship

What we need is quality central midfielders and probably two strikers coming in and we will be a serious force to be reckoned with

We have no idea how well Ogbene will recover from what is a very serious injury. He may never be quite the player that he was.

Hear you on the timings. When the transfer was made though, I recall our general thoughts being that the drop-off is too large when Axel isn't available. And Axel's never too far away from an injury, sadly for us all. He's missed a couple of games since his return, ignoring the suspension. And in January we had serious hopes of surviving, so it seemed a sensible position to reinforce.

It was a bad signing because he wasn't close to the level we'd hoped he'd be at, but I don't believe that should have been obvious before his signature. Not being good enough for the 3rd best team in Serie A isn't necessarily a red flag for a side in our predicament.

Worst case we've overpaid slightly but I have zero worries about Philogene. He will be fantastic for us next season and if we go up again it's money well spent.

I think Clarke has shown a lot more in his appearances than Philogene. Of the 2 I expect Clarke to be the most effective next season, I hope we don't cut our losses with him.

Where do they all fit in though? A lot of games and subs will be needed every game but that’s a lot of talent.

I’m not including Harness he’s not good enough to make our bench and will be sold. Of course a few may go, I’m pretty sure Omari does for decent money but I think specifically Clarke and Philogene are left sided wide players. Neither would be happy being on the bench regularly a level down, nor should they at that cost either with their championship records.

Got a nagging feeling we may sell Clarke for similar money we brought him for which would be annoying he’d be great next season and already showing he’s coming on a bit at this level.

For England, he plays left wing in a team that is always on the front foot and the dominant team, for us, he plays right wing back when in a team that’s normally under the cosh and on the back foot, defending.

Yes, I think Premier League experience is a big point that should feature in any discussion of our transfer failings. Unless the club hierarchy admits that our transfer policy was dictated by an assumption that we would come straight back down, that is. Personally I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theories, so I'm going to go with cock-up rather than conspiracy.

We do seem to have over-stocked in that area of the pitch.

I suspect Ogbene may go as well as Hutchinson.

We have missed Burns, Chaplin and Szmodics through injury a lot this season and there will be injuries among that list.

I agree that Harness probably leaves but a lot will depend on who is offering what for which players. McKenna clearly likes to have 2 players for each position and likes to change the front 3 or 4 late in the match. None of those appears to be able to play the striker role and I wonder if Szmodics and Broadhead were considered as possibly doing that.

I think we probably lose 2 of that list (as well as Enciso going back and Harness leaving). If more than 2 go, we probably sign someone else (or keep Harness as a squad player for next season).

That's a point but he looked every bit a Premier League player and the fee was reported as £8M. I could see a Premier club (especially a promoted one) taking a chance on his fitness. We wouldn't sell for less than we paid I am sure but, if he stays fit, £8M is a bargain I would say.
