When can we start burning tyres to keep warm? 22:13 - Apr 8 with 1896 views | BanksterDebtSlave | Trump signs four executive orders to boost US coal mining and production Donald Trump has signed four executive orders on coal. The first directs all departments and agencies to “end all discriminatory policies against the coal industry” including by ending the leasing moratorium on coal on federal land and accelerate all permitted funding for coal projects. The second imposes a moratorium on the “unscientific and unrealistic policies enacted by the Biden administration” to protect coal power plants currently operating. The third promotes “grid security and reliability” by ensuring that grid policies are focused on “secure and effective energy production” as opposed to “woke” policies that “discriminate against secure sources of power like coal and other fossil fuels”. And the fourth instructs the justice department to “vigorously pursue and investigate” the “unconstitutional” policies of “radically leftist states” that “discriminate against coal”.

No fan of Trump, or his policies, but by and large what the US does is a drop in the ocean compared to China and India. The difference is, a lot of the US population is comfortably secure and choose to ignore climate change. While a lot of India and some of rural China is mired in food and energy poverty and choose immediate survival over climate change.

You've got to find somebody to buy your coal as well. No point in paying to dig it out of the ground otherwise. Coal technology has been getting decommissioned for the last 40 years at an ever more rapid rate.

But they are still bringing more coal power stations online, over 1,000 and counting. I assume what’s driving this Trumpist policy is that the Chinese state also heavily subsidise the coal-fired power. Chinese companies therefore buying below cost energy (effectively a way of offering govt subsidies to lower the cost of production and undercut other economies). Certainly not a defence of it, coal has no place in this age, just thought I’d add some context.

U.S. produces more CO2 than India, both in total and per capita. Given the size of India's population, its actual emissions are not that bad. It's going the wrong way which isn't great but they really aren't the worst offenders. Russia, U.S. and China are all not great. China is starting to come back down but I would have thought Russia and the U.S. will start going up again soon which is depressing.

"We don’t really have much choice unless you don’t consume anything…" We do have a choice. It might be either very expensive or very minimalistic but saying "Yeah but China" while demanding 'cheap' stuff from them, seems a little hypocritical. You're right though, there needs to be an affordable and green alternative if the people are to take it seriously.

Is consuming less and demanding products that are built to last an option too? It is but probably wouldn't be great for your investments under the current economic model!

It is difficult to be sure about Trump's motives but I am not sure his policy in relation to coal is driven by anything China is up to. Instead, it seems to me to be driven by his dislike of what the executive order calls woke policies that discriminate against fossil fuels, as well as his desire to appeal to his base (as demonstrated by the fact that he made the announcement surrounded by coal miners). There may also be an element (given the US's self-sufficiency) of wanting other countries to import US energy (although not necessarily coal), as evidenced by the following. https://www.politico.eu/article/donald-trump-says-eu-must-buy-350b-of-us-energy- As it is, whether it will lead to much in the way of additional production or jobs is another matter, given coal production fell by 20% under Trump's first presidency (and actually picked up a little under Biden). Putting it another way, much of what Trump does is performative when it comes to his base. [Post edited 9 Apr 8:35]

Preaching to the converted mate, I try to avoid ‘fast fashion’ and certainly not under the illusion buying 3 tonne EV shipped from 1,000’s miles away is going to save the planet. I’ve even cut down to 4 ski trips this year…

The largest source of pollution from cars and damage to the roads is now caused by those 3 tonne EVs. Or rather, they’re no better than petrol/diesel now that we’ve the technology to clean up engines/exhaust gases and are often worse because they’re heavier. There was quite an interesting discussion about taxation yesterday on R5 which focused mostly on vehicle weight and the bad state of UK roads. Do you ever feel like governments struggle to see the whole picture? Not that I’m against phasing out fossil fuels, but it seems that we solve one problem by creating another one.
