Demonising who? She has decided that the council does not require these positions and is acting accordingly. If she goes along and does this it’s hardly a sound bite but action described by her,
Has it been said the council is firing black, brown or LGBT people?

Clearly demonising DEI as a function

This sort of stuff is honestly so childish. An adult would take a look at council spending, see where the priorities are, see where savings can be made etc. Not just go in and say "we're cutting all these jobs that don't actually exist"

Is this really what we want from people in power? It's pathetic

What? The roles arent there. The only reasons for saying this are (1) ignorance, and not knowing (despite satnding for election and intending this as a policy) that they dont exist; and/or; (2) because its populist rhetoric which plays well with racists.

Other have explained but if you can't see what they are doing then you're just confirming the points made by many, many posters in this thread.

One of the issues I have with Reform is that they will often say things that provoke an emotional response in people who don't then question what they are being told.

The following today was a case in point.

https://news.sky.com/video/stop-teaching-people-they-should-hate-their-country-s

In it Zia Yusuf says, "what we are talking about is, stop teaching young people in schools, writ large, that they should hate their country, that they should be ashamed".

My daughter is a primary school supply teacher who has taught a variety of ages in a variety of schools, and I can categorically say that this is not happening.

Of course no teacher is teaching children to hate their country

The issue is probably that they're no longer being taught to blindly love their country's past and are reaching their own conclusions about it, which makes some people feel uncomfortable

Of course there is! It’s all very well for you to spout your left wing drivel from your sanctuary. You need to look outside your bubble, though, at the wider picture. I’m not going to interact with you, as your views are so extreme

Why say it then, if not to provoke an emotional response?

As it is, what you say in the second paragraph is not the experience of my daughter. Indeed, she feels she has to tread carefully, especially with British values forming part of the curriculum.

Well not really is it because whatever these councils do now it will be vilified by posters on here!
I don’t care either way because I’m not there but if they do audits and find roles that are not needed are those people demonised as well ?
The voters ( populists and racists according to one poster) knew what they were getting so they will hold Reform to account on their commitments.

Did you even bother to read the link?

The roles don't even exist, there is no DEI officers in the council. It was a soundbite deliberately made without information to demonise that position and what it stands for.

I took the FOI answer as a literal answer that they didn't have anyone with the title "DEI Officer". Did you interpret it differently?

It’s easy to laugh at Andrea Jenkyns, and she makes it hard not to, but focusing on this nonsense and focusing on a gotcha moment is a distraction. I mean the press generally, not you in isolation.

The real issue is that Reform’s agenda is to rip up the fabric of inclusive and supportive local councils. That includes things like SEND provision, which so many families rely on. That’s what should be setting alarm bells ringing, but so many people don't realise how much of our critical services are undertaken in local government.

Excellent post. I'd usually agree with governments thinking there's no point taking the long term difficult route (which involves short term unpopularity and tough conversations) but it seems Labour have been doing a bit of that (for example the winter fuel payments and farmer's inheritance). These are things that probably are right and better for the long term that many are getting worked up about, which is making Labour and Starmer/Reeves especially unpopular right now.

The Tories were the masters of the crowd-pleasers, especially in the lead up to an election. People fell for it though, time and time again. Now Reform are telling a certain demographic what they want to hear, but they'll never actually do anything about it (even if, God forbid, they got in). It's all just words in a popularity contest.

And then there's the other problem, of course - if you do enact something unpopular for long term gain, there's nothing stopping the next government coming in and repealing it (to much applause and short term popularity), so it was pointless anyway.

The new government are getting all the applause from the public, who just endured the short-term difficulty and now won't get the long term rewards.

I would love to know what you mean by "The new government are getting all the applause from the public, who just endured the short-term difficulty and now won't get the long term rewards."

Are you talking about the popular current Labour government riding the wave of the long-term decisions of the last government? If so, what specific policies are those?

i think it refers to the first para and the hypothetical new government which reversed the (short-term) unpopular policies of the previous hypothetical government?

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Local Education Authority SEND provision was destroyed by Michael Gove in the Cameron led Government era. And then Local Education Authorities followed.

All part of the expansion of the Academisation of schools, which ended LEA budget top-slicing, and therefore the funding which enabled SEN specialists to support schools, and pupils on a "need" basis.
