Trump to re-open Alcatraz on 08:52 - May 5 with 1879 views | Churchman | I’ve visited it. Fascinating place. They reckon that there was nobody they couldn’t break in Alcatraz. It starts with a big sign ‘this is not a place of correction’ . They ever used it for executions, though I’m sure the Donald would want to change that. As it goes, I very much doubt it’s anything more than Trump dribbling on with his latest stupid idea. It cost way more than any other prison to maintain for obvious reasons and the sea air was literally eating away the integrity of the building. You’d have to rebuild it from scratch. They’d be better off using it as a tourist attraction and using the money raised to build a cage somewhere else more sensible. How about Mar a Lago?

I visited back in the 90's. Am I right in reading they had nice warm showers so inmates didn't acclimatize to cold water which the island is surrounded by?

The bloke showing us round didn’t mention that. I did volunteer to be shut in a solitary confinement/bad boy cell. Wasn’t nice. There was nothing in it bar a hole in the floor. No bed, light or anything else. It was all about sensory deprivation. The inmate was stripped and bunged in. Food went in and out through a cat flap and every so often the guard would poke a hose through and blast the bloke with cold water. As far as the bay is concerned, yes the water is pretty cold but we were told the real killer was the currents. Your chances of surviving them were practically zero and tbf, when you are standing on Alcatraz, SF looks a heck of a long way away. Despite the film, escapees and myth, I seriously doubt anyone survived trying to swim it.

Just because you were passing it? Doubt that was your fault, to be fair.

Were they disease carrying? Wasn't there something connecting an increasing fly nuisance with the (protected) cormorant rookeries established some time after the prison's closure? What would I know? The closest I ever got to Alcatraz was Fisherman's Wharf (oh and the film Point Blank).

You volunteered for that! I guess there are people who even pay for such experiences. Did you have a safe word or a set period time before they let you out again? I can understand why you switched to describing your experience to the third person. It must have been quite traumatic.

I was only shut in I’d guess for a minute or so. No, no safe word or time limit. Didn’t really think about it but was glad to get out. It was 1992 and all very casual. After the tour you could roam about the place at will until your time came up to hop back on the ferry. I can’t imagine how awful it must have been to be slammed in there for days on end utterly in control of other people. The normal cells reminded me of a battery hen farm. In rows, one side faced the other. They were tiny barred and exposed. The guards were at the end of the rows behind wire and armed with guns. An overriding memory was being told that just about everything was a privilege, including visiting, books, you name it. The prison yard was as you see in the movies. If you got to the top step and jumped up and down, you could see the SF sky line. The whole place was designed for max misery.

Symbolism of the worst kind too. Like removing a memorial under pressure of the NRA

100% It’s crackers that some people want to replicate Trump’s approach over here. You could write a thesis on why that would be bad for us all individually and for the country as a whole.
