Hmm only problem is by going to Chelsea instead of the likes of Forest or Newcastle, he's unlikely to be sold to a "bigger club" if he's performing well. Let's hope there's clauses for goals / England caps

I said this in the other thread, but seeing as you've started a new one: As I, and many others, have been saying all along - we had no choice but to accept Delap's release clause and City's sell-on clause, and we DO have our own sell-on clause for the future.

I'd like to think the twits banging on about Ashton having his pants pulled down will STFU now, but I won't hold my breath.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Quite. You would have to be a bit of a halfwit to think we would’ve accepted such a clause anything other than reluctantly. There’s no value in it whatsoever from a clubs perspective and can only have been a red line in the negotiation from Delap & his agents perspective. Ashton wasn’t a stupid man 12 months ago and he isn’t now, and he’s been buying and selling players for a long, long time.

As others have already said, it all seemed pretty obvious to me.

But nah, I’ve no doubt the damp trolleys cadre will enlighten us with a new angle.

I don't doubt that it’s something Delap would have pushed, but it’s not automatically fact that we had no choice but to accept it or not sign him just because Mark Ashton or someone else says it is (6 other clubs offering the same… )

If we’d refused to offer the clause but given him £1bn signing on fee he’d have signed for Ipswich, same if we’d offered £400k per week. Obviously those are ridiculous examples, but the point is that those sort of clauses form part of a negotiating package alongside fees, wages etc and we’ve ultimately accepted them in lieu of increasing terms elsewhere (which is probably a sensible approach and beneficial overall, even if it means we have potentially left £20m on the table in this particular case)

People have called him naive for settling the limit so low - well obviously he didn't set the limit ...and whoever did set it, it's all hindsight to say it was low, nobody knew he'd turn out as good as he has. I bet even Delap and his representatives weren't certain he'd be worth more than £30m by the end of the season, and were probably more concerned with a wage drop clause than the release clause. The fact that the base fee was £15m and they set the release at £30m looks like nobody really knew so they just put it at double.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

The "6 other clubs offering the same" was clearly just a general point rather than specifically about Delap.

You're obviously just playing Devil's Advocate (by even admitting your scenarios are ridiculous and the approach we took was sensible) but actually we have no real reason to doubt Ashton. He's been doing player deals for years, he's not an idiot, he's also not going to deliberately do something that would be worse for the club, so I think it's fair to say he's telling the truth. We were shown both sets of terms and told take it or leave it, there are other interested parties if you leave it.

Nothing more needs to be said on the matter.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Good news if there is a sell on. Give it a couple of years and Pep will hang up his boots, Haaland will sign for Real Madrid, and Maresca will drop £200m to bring his star striker with him when he takes the reins at City. FACT.

Well I think the chartered accountant ought to get a job negotiating the deals. Maybe the club could do interviews with Mr CA and the other know best brigade or take them on as advisors. Yeah, that’d do it.

Appreciate your post is tongue in cheek but being a chartered accountant doesn’t give anyone any knowledge of the intricacies of football contracts, especially when armed with the same limited information as anyone else.

I say this as a chartered accountant myself.

Did you miss the bit about the sell-on? That's about as well protected as we could be in this deal. There was every possibility it was a flat £30m release fee and no sell-on, so Ashton's done well to get one considering our limited bargaining chips.

Devil's in the detail again. Firstly, the percentage of the sell on. Secondly, some sell on's are only activated if the new club are making a profit on the transfer - hopefully this one isn't the case.

The issue was more that people were reading into the (fairly limited) word "protected" some sort of guarantee we could reap maximal profits from a player who had turned out to be surprisingly well-regarded in the Prem. A problem of unwarranted over-interpretation, rather than unfairly raised expectations.

He also said ‘hell yeah’ when asked if players would only leave on our terms.

I’m not really sure why Ashton was so bullish at the time as it didn’t need to be said. That was a mistake in my opinion.

We have no idea of the sell-on percentage, although this is usually between 20-30%. I would be very surprised, and it would be unusual, if this isn't based upon the new club's (likely to be Chelsea) profit, otherwise we would be asking for an additional payment when the new club would be making a loss on the player trade. Put another way, if Chelsea or whoever should ultimately sell him for less than £30 million, then it would make the current price appear to be a very good one.

Yes we did

Time for a few people to eat humble pie - but I suspect they're more likely to double down on their negative rhetoric, and say we should have moved on from Delap.
