So, intrigued by this I had a look at Shed Seven's Wikipedia page in the hope of seeing a Chumbawumba like backstory but no luck. However:

'Their latest album, A Matter of Time, was released on 5 January 2024 and became the first number one album in their career. Shed Seven released another album on 27th September of the same year, Liquid Gold, which went straight in at number one on the official UK album charts,..Both Witter and Banks had also previously played together in a band named ENAM, performing to German exchange students in Banks's front room...Despite their third single release, "Speakeasy", entering the UK charts at number 24 and giving them their biggest hit to date, the first negative press reviews began to emerge. Writing for the UK music magazine NME in August 1994, John Mulvey believed that it represented ".four clumsy blokes trying to come over all sensuous, fragile and complex."— On 12 October 2019, Shed Seven played a short pre-match set prior to the 2019 Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford, Manchester'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shed_Seven

So I will probably give the Glarsto coverage this afternoon a miss but if I was at a festival, having seen Yorkshire 'has-been' bands The Mission and Terrorvision and their enthusiastic fans in recent years, I would give Shed Seven a look if there was nothing on at another stage that demanded my attention.

The NME loved to build bands up and then knock them down. I remember that they really had it in for Shed Seven - don’t know why, maybe because they didn’t slag off other bands every five minutes or give their writers free drugs.

A very underrated band in my opinion.

I won’t be able to watch them on iplayer live but hopefully their set will be on iplayer tonight as well.

Cheers LL.

if you were betting on which '90s britpop would have 2 no.1 albums in 2024, then you'd have got long odds on them

they were also-rans from york chiefly known for rhyming slang involving their singer!

I class myself as quite the "muso" and I won't have a bad word said about Rick and the boys.

Saw them late last year at Norwich UEA and they played one hell of a show.

Instant Pleasures album from 2017 is a wonderful album.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

I wonder if the grief they got was in part due to such a terrible name. Fantastic band with some great tunes IMO.

That didn't really hinder Arctic Monkeys though.

I would say the reason they weren't massive was because their music stayed pretty indie rock and didn't move towards anthems in the way other bands, who became big, did.

Going for Gold and Getting Better are anthems aren't they? Chasing Rainbows?

Anyway, A Matter of Time is a surprisingly good album, possibly my favourite by them, which isn't bad more than 30 years after their first.

Kind of indie anthems but not Wonderwall or Common People.

That's not saying they are inferior, just they're not getting to sell many in Woolworths as was.

Saw them at Latitude a couple of years back. They were in the Saturday lunchtime slot on the main stage which was great scheduling as it got the crowd into the arena early - loads of middle aged dads singing along and reliving their youth (myself included)! They actually have a great back catalogue, I thought they were fab :)

I think they had some great songs, and have seen them at a Festival both in the 90s and subsequently, and they put on a show both times.

But one of the reasons they became a punchline to the NME was that they printed a story that Rick Witter was arrested for Criminal Damage.

He had allegedly spray painted "Shed Seven" on a wall at York station, if I recall correctly.

"Real bands have fans to do their graffiti for them" the NME sniffed.

They were never given any respect by them again.

Does anyone else remember this? Because Google is giving me nothing.

I'd say Arctic Monkeys is a slightly better name than Shed 7. Sheds are just so mundane, boring and the realm of dads. Arctics also had more swagger, a more charismatic frontman, and his witty lyrics, and accent to go with them, made them stand-out from the pack.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I think Google is getting increasingly sanitised, and less likely to give an answer unless there is money in it for someone. Tried it and YouTube for a clip from 'The First Team' where a normally placid Italian manager is given the opportunity to say goodbye to the supporters with an on the pitch half time speech and he launches into a vitriolic rant (I was hoping to add to the Van Nistelrooy thread with a comment that could have been aimed at Leicester about an earlier management dismissal.)

How do you know shed is being used as a noun? They might have employed Paul Cook to reduce their unnamed band squad size and used the description of the resultant cull as their moniker.
