Devastating blow, so gutted to lose Sam (n/t) on 10:27 - Jul 15 by itfcjoe

A really, really risky move - I was already very worried about our CM recruitment and how much we needed to do, and it just got harder.

We still need 2 absolute A grade players in there - not going to be easy to get done.

Whatever Morsy's thoughts, I would have had him play out his contract, it's only another year

It sounds to me that we've done the right thing by him. There's no way we could offer him anything more than this season if we get promoted, unless as a coaching role, and we need to prepare for promotion as a hard target.

Doubt he would have got his lucrative Kuwait contract at the end of this season, so letting him go for free now was the right thing to do and the rest of the players would appreciate that. Keeping him here to play a bit part against his will would have been an awful decision.

A special player/man

Sad to lose him but understand the reasons

Perhaps he could make a guest appearance in a pre-season friendly

Deserves a proper send off

This is the difficult thing for us fans, when a player like this leaves in this way, we don't get the closure of that "final hurrah" playing in the shirt.

Massimo got that and it just doesn't feel right to see him 'just go'.

Absolutely devastated - but he goes with all the best wishes possible. A modern day legend. Will be so so difficult to replace.

It pretty much solidifies the fact that the club is looking to evolve for the next steps in the journey of progression though. It looks as though we are looking to upgrade upon that special L1/Champ team.

Let's hope the club can get it right, because that group was very very special - and the numbers we are now paying for players, you can't really afford to get it wrong.

48 years a Town fan and Morsy is easily in the top 5 captains during that time.
Maybe higher.

You get the impression that team would have crawled over broken glass for him.

Signing Josh Brownhill would soften the blow a little.

Understand why this is happened but this is one hell of a high wire act from us now ahead of a season that will be relentless.

100%.

With Luongo, Tuazebe, Burgess and Morsy leaving, that's a huge amount of experience and leadership lost in a relatively young, remaining squad.

The pressure is firmly back on MA and KMC. You'd seriously hope they have a bullet proof contingency plan in place for this.

I think this has the potential to be a really damaging blow to our promotion hopes this season.

We're obviously confident of signing at least two more quality midfielders.

Two out of Ruiz, Hackney, Morton or Cajuste will do.

I can't see Cajuste happening. If he is going to go out on loan again, it will be to another top flight club somewhere in Europe.

Family security with a longer contract, combined with limited game time here this season you can see why he has asked to have the time to resolve this.

Absolutely gutting, but you can see why the club have taken the stance over any new contract.

I also don't think he is that sort of player to have an impact from the bench we would need.

Any idea if Downes is back in the picture as we are still very light in the CM area.

Feels nothing like it in my opinion. We have replaced a 34 year old legend with an upgrade.

We replaced Scowcroft with a highly decorated Nigerian international and World Cup star...

I felt sure he'd have a role to play this season albeit a lesser one.

If that doesn't work for him then it's right we let him move on.

Yes, always gutting to see such a great servant go. He's been exceptional for us.

That said, he'll be 34 in September and whilst I think he's got a good season of Champ football in him, looking beyond that he won't be in the mix if we do great promoted or what we need if we don't go up.

So, I can't begrudge him a move and nor do I think it's a poor move from Town - sensible all round.

Good luck Sam and thanks for all the fish.

Indeed, Morsy was a good captain but he’s clearly on the decline. I imagine he’d have played a solid rotational role this season, but I also can’t see Sam settling for that- careers winding down, he can take the cash and play regularly at a lesser level- makes sense for him I guess.

People are getting hysterical.

Nobody is being hysterical ffs.

People are rightly pointing out there has been an enormous amount of churn already this summer with on field and off field staff and are reasonably a bit concerned, given history shows us this can sometimes lead to far from optimal outcomes.

If you don't think we'll miss Morsy's qualities and leadership attributes that's fine but I'd gently suggest you've probably not been paying attention for the last three years.

Even McKenna himself said last month Sam would be here this season so he was in our plans and KM clearly wasn't concerned he was on the decline.

Makes sense for him. Probably gets a good payday, can say he played in the Premier League and will get more playing time.

ITFC legend.

The best player in our best team in a generation, very sad news. He's probably not the man for our midfield now and definitely isn't next season (be that top end of Champ or Prem) and so I think we are doing right by him more than anything - glad he is going abroad if that turns out to be the case.

It says in Watson's story ... they couldn't come to an agreement on a new contract.

Who gives a sh1t?!

He's under contract and has done very well financially out of us too - having been plucked from the lower end of the Champ.

Make him play out his last year.

I wonder if we'll look at Travis again? Clearly not at Morsy's level, but has the nous and experience in the Championship and would come cheap given no new contract on the horizon at Blackburn.

This would make sense. Hope you're right.

We really need some EFL experience you feel in there.

It is a huge blow but..

He’d now be second choice in his position, Matusiwa is clearly a leader to - vice captain to Robben at Groningen so often wore the armband as Robben regularly injured. This at the age of 22.

As NThqld said keeping him this season against his wishes could affect his chances of a final lucrative contract. I think the club have been very good at allowing players to move on if they’re not fully on board with their position in the squad.

I think also having been a bit deflated at being unable to complete in the Premier league I feel the need to embrace the changes that will hopefully help if we make the step up next season.

The risk is that there’s no one through the door as back up to Matusiwa or as first choice along side him. I think if we can raise a few tequilas by the end of the week then it’ll feel squad wise a lot less worrying. Well not replace what SM has done for the club over the last few years - thank you Sam Morsy.

Only another year where the decline in his performances would probably have begun to be obvious, where he would be a rotational player, at best, and where he would quite possibly tarnished his reputation at the club. This way he leaves with that intact, with the gratitude of all associated with ITFC and with him being shown proper respect by the Club.

Absolutely spot on. I think people over-egg his ‘decline’, when he was available, he played every single game for us, keeping Kalvin Phillips or Cajuste out of the side. He would have been more than capable to play for us in the Championship.

Never injured for a long period of time, there’s a reason why McKenna very rarely dropped him. The fact McKenna clearly wanted to keep him speaks volumes too.

A very risky move from the club, feels very much like a changing of the guard with the amount of senior players leaving. I guess it has to happen if we want to emulate and become a club like Brighton, Brentford or Bournemouth.
