TEAM on 19:21 - Aug 12 by TrumptonBlue | Sure, but what would be the point of not putting him on the bench if there's a spare spot and he's available? |
To counter that, what *is* the point? I would argue it's a form of communication to the team above McKenna, rather than of any footballing value.

TEAM on 19:17 - Aug 12 by The_Flashing_Smile | Not sure I buy this "putting two keepers on the bench to send a message to Ashton". Ashton knows we need players. And McKenna could tell him if he didn't! It would be rather childish to make a point this way, and I have McKenna down as much more sensible than that. Seems much more likely to me that players have been ruled out late and Button's stepped in. |
Yeah. Take that Ashton. I'll show you! Or something.

Hope they don’t infect the other players

TEAM on 18:50 - Aug 12 by pointofblue | So no Cajuste, Hutchinson or Akpom. Hmm. Would have thought today would be a good time to give them a run out, even if only for 30 minutes or so. Out of interest, their league line up on Saturday was: Smith, Sowunmi, Cameron, Webster, Ifill, Charles, Pinnock, Thompson, Cheek, Whitely, Hondermarck I make that seven changes on quick count for them. |
I imagine Sowunmi was very keen to be involved in this one.

You have no idea if we're "indulging" him at all. It could just as easily be a Club / McKenna decision.

You're right. I have no idea. That's why I am asking a question. Just seems like like lots of players who have had bids are still playing for the team who pay their wages whilst Hutchinson hasn't kicked a ball since Charlton a few weeks back, [Post edited 12 Aug 19:46]

McKenna's comment after Auxerre was clear - Omari decided he wasn't able to play. Not the club's decision. Not a joint one. Omari's. For him to say it outright suggested at the time annoyance at Hutchinson's approach. Maybe they have sorted it out, and Hutchinson has a legitimate sore throat now. But that remark set McKenns's stall out

Indeed, could be Southampton don't plan on selling, or simply have a different strategy. We could well be just protecting an asset that is going to be sold.

I reckon Ashton is more concerned about getting the new walk way installed at PR so he can access his seat from his box, without having to go a slightly longer route…

Do you genuinely think we'd rather protect an asset for sale over being able to utilise his talents... surely it's in the clubs interest to keep hold of hutch rather then selling him.

Could easily be both, we couldn't say no to 35million+ and the player wants to return to the Prem.

Yes. Do you think we need Omari tonight more than we could do with £40m?

We don’t want to do a Dane Scarlett and play him before a loan deal - because if that doesn’t work out or we want to move him to a higher league etc. then we can’t if he’s played for us.

TEAM on 19:18 - Aug 12 by urbanpenguin | How is it stepping in? It would be very, very unlikely to need three keepers in a game, to the point where there's little point? |
I'm not sure I understand your first question. Players get injured late, the only other available player is a keeper, so they pop him in. Not really that difficult to understand. There probably isn't much point, but there's no point leaving him out either if he's there. I find it very unlikely Ashton doesn't know we need players. And I find it very unlikely McKenna would have a strop about it and just put a keeper on the bench to make a point that didn't need making.
