Don’t think any of us were expecting this much squad turnover, but honestly, it sounds like we’ve just been pretty unlucky.
Broady – Been pushing for a move to his boyhood club since pre-season kicked off
Morsy – Got a life-changing offer from the Middle East
Burgess – World Cup year, so of course he wanted guaranteed starts
Tuanzebe – Wanted to move home and play in the Prem
Delap & Hutch – Always likely they’d move on
Not sure there’s much we could’ve done to stop any of that without throwing out ridiculous contracts.
The only thing I think we might’ve handled better is getting into the market earlier and getting deals done faster. Even then, we tried for Hackney, Azon’s clearly been on the radar for ages, and Cajuste went off to explore other options.
Maybe I’m giving the club too much leeway, but it feels like the cards have just fallen awkwardly and left us in a tough spot.

I do truly wonder if we could have kept Morsy on for his final year as club captain with a financial incentive and maybe healthy promotion bonus. He may not have been team captain and not a starter, but I'd still like him here. He could still play a part on the field. |
But he’s literally been offered north of £10m (largely tax free presumably) to play somewhere else for a couple of years. Nothing we could offer would compete with that. | | | |

Just had a feeling that would be the case. I never once thought Burgess or Tuanzebe would sign new deals, we all knew Luongo was going before the season finished, as we did with Delap. Had a feeling Broadhead would go given the past 12 months, plus I then expected another 1 from Hutchinson, O’Shea and Davis to go. We was always going to see Slicker and Muric go as well.
The only left field departure was Morsy for me, which is a massive shame. I still think we could see another 4-5 go as well, so given we’re at 6 signings, we could end up on 10-12 again.

You think another 4-5 will go? Do you mean fringe players like Al Hamadi, etc including on loan? Or do you mean first team players being sold? I would be very surprised if we sold more than 2 more first team players and I would hope it wouldn't be any more at all. |  |

We could easily have held on to Morsy, but I reckon McKenna felt that at 35 next month we'd do well to get another good season out of him & he certainly wouldn't be much use if we got promoted again. I guess the aim is to build a new & better Town (very hard when in the Championship) & we need a younger player than Morsy as a big part of that. Not getting Hackney is a disappointment & we'll have to see if Matisuwa can adjust to the pace of English football. |

I’m not sure this level of turnover was planned exactly given the few we really wanted to keep but became necessary once trading became possible. I assume the club made a reasonable attempt to keep a few despite saying they wanted all:

Everything else is about replacing and powering up for the level we are now at. You can’t direcy replace Delap, Morsy, OH as they were phenomena in their moments. | |

I’m very surprised he’s still here. Agreed on both points - he’d be a huge loss and we’d struggle to replace. Townsend would be a good replacement so his injury could end up being more significant. |
Which is why I am pretty sure Davis will stay.
The big question for me is the extent to which our squad is stronger than 2 years ago, when we last started a season in the Championship. My view is that we are far stronger, almost everywhere. CM is perhaps the exception, but time will tell. It'll be interesting to see what we now do in the market - LB, CM & RW? | | | |
