We got Liverpool and then Man City

Tbf our match at home vs Everton was somewhat early in the season as well (October), and we played nowhere as well as Leeds today. It was a terrible performance by us.

My main take from that was how poor Everton looked. I mean they were embarrassingly bad and it wasn't that Leeds made them look poor, they did it all by themselves. Hoof hoof hoof and Dewsbury-Hall still can't stay upright for more than 5 minutes.

Also Leeds are a big, strong, fast, powerful team which is something we really lacked last season..

Why? Good for them. Who cares, they’re not my club.

In any case, it’s first game and if you want to feel less jealous, have a look at how Burnley did at Spurs - a club we beat.

It just shows show $hite our recruitment last season was. Signing lightweight English U21s may have been good for resale but Delap aside they were unfit for life in the PL. Loaning players that were unfit coming into the season didn't help either.

Hopefully GC and KM have learnt their lesson.

Yeh I thought Everton were worryingly lively in that game

I don't think they have quite got themselves together in the same way this time around though, it was good timing for Leeds

Leeds incidentally look about the most likely side to stay up in the last couple of years of the promoted teams imho

They got themselves together long after we played them. IIRC they were a point above us after a handful of games, looked absolutely dismal until January and we never laid a glove on them.

They reminded me a bit of us last season until they got the penalty , and there is what will give them a more of a chance than we had - more chance of refs giving them penalties than we us

Lol why the downvotes?

Truth hurts isn’t it?

Last season I posted the same questions re our squad and Leeds and was likewise downvoted. If we played our 24/25 squad against the present Leeds squad we would most probably lost 9 out of 10 times as well.

Take off the blue tinted specs, our recruitment and performance (especially in the second half of the season) was terrible. I watched plenty of games on TV with neutrals and fans of other clubs and they are shocked at how $hite we were on most weekends. Had a Watford fan telling me we were even worse than they were in the PL.

The back-to-back promotion was impressive, but that doesn’t give GC, MA and KM de facto immunity from criticism. Sunderland had 2 promotions in 5 seasons (just one season more than us) - do you see their fans both online and in person praising Louis-Dreyfus and Le Bris to the heavens? They were more than often routinely criticised even last season and throughout the summer. Complacency and apathy breeds mediocrity.

We gave up a bit as well. I still think that the squad we put together was horribly unbalanced. I bet Hutchinson and Delap won't start too often for their new clubs. Wonder why we're often seen as an unattractive club to better players when, let's face it, you couldn't wish for a better area to live in, London apart.

"somewhat early in the season" is not remotely comparable to first game back after promotion.

Maybe because everything you post is relentlessly negative.

Leeds had been in the Prem more recently than us. They've had more time (and money) to get set for it. We got promoted ahead of schedule and it was too big a gap to breach coming up through the divisions that quickly.

I'd rather wear blue specs than black, along with that little black cloud above your head.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

And we had Jack Clarke ballooning our chance to get us going in that game with an opportunity I’d have scored. Unlucky with the penalty that day too, whereas the crowd clearly helped Leeds get theirs last night.

OR…

We got promoted sooner than expected with very much a Champ/League One squad.

We could have spent large on Xhaka type wages, but the likely relegation that followed would have seen those type of players leave with little re-sale value and no progression at all as a club.

We bought the England U’21 type of player, primarily for their potential development, but also with more than one eye on FFP if they needed to be sold.

8 of our starting 11 on Sunday were purchased to play at a higher level. They (plus Cajuste and Akpom, and a couple more before the window shuts in all likelihood) are good enough to get us up and will then form the backbone of a very good squad with only 5 or 6 additions needed rather than 15 or 16 if we do go up.

Last year was not much fun as a fan, but has hopefully provided a really solid foundation for many years to come.

We played both Everton and West Ham when they were in relegation form and their respective mangers were on the verge of the sack. We were out coached, out fought and out classed in both games.

So far Leeds and Sunderland have shown far more attacking endeavour than we did. Their striker isn’t isolated and they weren’t playing square balls around the midfield before running out of ideas and passing back to their defenders.

You're missing the point made by many. If we'd played one of Everton or West Ham on the opening day - full of the beans of promotion and back in the top flight after 20 years, with a vociferous and hopeful crowd behind us - we'd have stood a much better chance of winning like Leeds and Sunderland have.

Especially given that we matched Liverpool for an hour, with the aforementioned beans probably being a large factor in that. Unfortunately, they were Livepool.

"So far Leeds and Sunderland have shown far more attacking endeavour than we did." FFS, it's ONE game. And their 'full of beans back in the Prem' game.

You're not comparing like with like.

Have to agree with this Dollers.

People are losing their minds a bit based on one game. It's 100% the case that the second half of last season was dismal from us, but we actually put in some very decent home performances in the first half of the season, without managing to get the win over the line.

Let's judge the promoted teams in a couple of months and see how they are looking.
