Coventry have offer rejected for Woolfenden… 18:58 - Aug 19 with 5265 viewsKieran_Knows

… Town have no intention of selling.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

Woolfy and Cameron Humphreys count as club developed players, and my understanding of the rules is that without a club developed player in the match day squad, the club is only able to name 8 (and not 9) subs.

McKenna has indicated that Humphreys will be in the squad this season, so presumably if Woolfy goes, Humphreys will feature in most match day squads because it is better to have 9 rather than 8 subs.

Barbrook is also a club developed player, and I believe would not count towards the 25 man squad limit because of his age but I don't think McKenna has said he plans to have him in the squad.

My heart says love Woolfy and would more than like him to remain.

Head says this is good for all parties. As much as we love Woolfy it not right for a player with his ability to be a regular on the Bench. Again head speaking we have better and I know it's a hugely unpopular opinion but I just don't see him as a Prem player if/when we go up. I think he is 4th choice now and We've been linked with absolute quality as well.

It's just the right thing for all parties. He's a proper Ipswich lad. My other question mark is hand on heart does he have top level mentality. He's very very laid back. Day to day I do wonder if that's not quite for McKenna.

An absolute local hero and legend forever.

Poll: Who do we think McKenna (not you) will partner Greaves with ?

I keep seeing this ‘good for all parties’

How is us not having a top CB in our squad good for us?

Chances are we end up trying to loan someone from a PL team who will ultimately turn us down. We are at risk of losing some real identity and character from what has made us ‘us’ over the last couple of years

I suppose it comes from the fact we’ve got to £15m+ centre halves currently playing and seemingly first choice (whether they should be is another discussion), plus signed another on loan with obligation to purchase should we go up and have been linked with another 2 centre backs in the space of a week.

I can’t imagine we’d look to carry 5 senior centre halves and from Woolfies perspective and PSR terms, he’ll be pure profit whatever we was to sell for.

FWIW, I hope we keep him, but can understand if he wanted to go.

What if he wants to leave though and who could blame him

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Didnt an "In the knower" claim that Wolfie was desperate to leave and had told KM that.

Or am I dreaming it ?

Not dreaming. Desperate is a bit of a stretch, but it’s fairly well known around the club that he’d be very open to a move. Club (rightly) of the belief that it’ll cost more to replace him with someone of his quality, than we would receive for wolfie as a fee. Been brewing for quite a while now.

Why would any quality centre half sign for us?

They will clearly only ever be a back-up and only play if there are injuries. Ideally O’Shea and Greaves play every match.

Very tricky position to bring players in for.

Am I going mad, but what CB have we signed on loan with a view to buy if we go up?

Well we paid £18M for Greaves, so I’d say £10M for Woolfie would bag someone a bargain.

Exactly - if a player with a handful of games in a weak Danish league is ‘worth’ EUR 20m then GBP 10m for a defender who’s played in the PL and two promotions under his belt is a bargain.

We had no interest in selling Broadhead either….

Indeed. And I seem to recall reporting we're interested in a Uruguayan international centre-half...

If he wants to leave, and the numbers work, wouldn’t really have an issue with Woolfe moving on, as much as I am a big fan of his, and always special seeing a homegrown player with the group.

However, I would also understand the desire to go and play, and really can’t see him dislodging Dara.

Would of course mean we’d need a replacement lined up, hence the recent links with Caceres and Asante.

Cov honing in on their Bobby Thomas replacement. Would hope for all of that sale money to be sent our way for a talent like Woolf, and would leave another gap that must be replaced this window. But Woolf must play footy again at some point!

No, I don't. I think it had gone a little further than us just casting an eye but whether it's going to progress, I don't know. Will probably depend on a departure given we're not really in need of another centre-half unless someone, presumably Woolfy, moves on.

Agreed. We shouldn't be accepting less than they get for Bobby Thomas.

I think people are being a bit sentimental about Woolfy. I'd love him to stick around as a back up centre back too but I am sure he wants to play and it makes financial sense for us to sell. If we got say £8m for him, that is pure profit for FFP purposes. Even if we went out and spent all of that on a replacement, we are going to be in profit as you would spread that fee over the length of the contract. This is the player trading Ashton talked about.

If we're signing someone like Cáceres, he isn't coming to sit on our bench, surely? He's coming in as serious competition for Greaves/DOS?

The issue is keeping him happy. I think the point was made on page one that we're unwilling to sell as we won't be able to sign someone of his calibre to be back up.

I can only presume he signed the new contract because he was happy to be a squad player in the Premier League and thought O'Shea would move on upon relegation, maybe with a promise from the club he would be a starter again if so. As it is, O'Shea has stayed and his career has been left in purgatory because of it. I wonder how long it will be before he picks up a sore throat.

Posturing aside in order to get the best fee, I'd be amazed if we weren't willing to sell personally. I am sure MA (in conjuction with McKenna) is regularly looking at the market valuation of every player vs the value the player is held at on our balance sheet. If we can realise a good profit and the player isn't deemed 'key' then we are going to sell if we are sensible.

I think it's might be down to not wanting to forage through the centre back market when we're still chasing central midfielders and strikers. There are only so many hours in a day. We have seemingly asked by Caceres and there was that rumour about the second guy who's name escapes me but it may not be seen as a priority. I imagine he'll be another Broadhead - McKenna will claim he didn't want to lose him as he's excellent at sitting on his backside but, for the right price, he'll go.

As with other players, the club are (relatively) in control as Woolfenden only signed a new contract is January.

If he was desperate to leave, why would he do that, or at least not have some sort of clause in it....!

Obviously something like £10m is a decent amount, but only if we can get someone better in, which seems unlikely if they're going to have to play 2nd fiddle to O'Shea.
