We’ve used this and strengthened well under Ashton but how on earth would we be able to do this again this season? There really don’t appear to be any weak links in the squad. Perhaps re visit the Uruguay CB?

My other thought is that we will target younger players to develop.

Are we missing a defensive midfielder cover? If Matusiwa gets injured not sure we have anyone else who can do that.

We have a few of the old guard to move on, Walton is in the last year of his contract. Only Leif really in the team. H Clarke, Burns to move on post injury? Others out on loan to go.

Upgrades still required where others can go Taylor? AAH. Also any injuries that occur. A few changes in Jan and a few more in the summer

Can see us going for Caceres again, and then hopefully a new number 1, plus centre mid cover for Matusiwa.

It will depend a lot on

Whether BJ or H Clarke is getting game time
Whether Burns is fit and getting game time
Whether Humphries Baggott are getting game time

Which injuries we are covering

Whether we are scoring enough
Whether we are conceding to many

Which players are available!

I like the idea of further investments in younger players for PL2.

Having changed - and spent - a lot over the summer and assuming the team is functioning smoothly, with success, there is no absolute need to hire any new players at all in January. It could be a source of distuption (as they integrate), rather than a boost. Would also neccessitate more departures to fit the 25-man squad, unless they were both permanent signings and young enough.

That having been said, the suggestions so far are logical and sensible.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

A keeper
Matusiwa backup
Possibly someone to replace Taylor

Wouldn't say any of these are that urgent though

I’d say a Matu backup effectively replaces Taylor as we’ve already got Nunez in to literally replace him. Taylor’s making up the numbers now (no disrespect to him). That would give us 4 senior pros for those 2 places plus Humphreys.

If we get those three we can swap out Baggot, Button and one other (not Humphreys as he’s needed so we can gave 9 subs rather than 8).

It would be either Harry Clarke, Ben Johnson or Wes.

I’d keep Wes as he is quicker than McAteer which makes him a different prospect on the right

Hopefully he remains quicker after the injury

I think, for the first time, we're going into the season proper in a very strong position and with no screaming weaknesses needing to be addressed.

Too many factors to consider between now and January, but will predominantly be about injuries.

This is my concern. No cover for Matusiwa. Can't see Nunes, Cajuste or Taylor doing the dirty work to the same level as him. Same with Humphreys.

The window has only just closed so a lot can happen in the next few months - but that's where I would be looking for cover.

Has been said that Johnson has played there before. Might be a more physical option than the others. Or maybe Cajuste and Nunes can cope OK together.

Agree with this....Town often go back in for players they identify, and can see us trying again. Maybe even Hackney too grounding in where we are in the league and Boro.

I think the key is if we pick up any long term injuries. We have a lot of options in our squad now. Still a bit away from Saturday/Tuesday/Saturday football. We should really take off when that starts happening next month.

New keeper

New central defensive midfielder

Harry Clarke and Burns to leave on loan

Someone could get injured and have to be replaced.

Think we are strong across the pitch. Maybe a 9 and maybe go back in for hackney but unless there are injuries think he’ll work with a settled squad and not look too get many in to spend time integrating.
Nothing wrong with Palmer in goal

Defensive midfield cover - maybe we can do a deal similar to the Travis one.
Left back cover if we can move one or even 2 of our gaggle of right backs out.
Those are the priorities.

Depending on how our centre forwards are performing maybe there will be a move to be made to fire us over the line.

Next summer if we are promoted will be the time to look at goalkeepers again - I can see not benefit in changing midseason unless there is a really big problem.

That's the beauty of the Jan window, isn't isn't it?

Unlikely that we'd see gaps in our squad now and think 'we'll leave that until January,' but we've got another window to make things right if a) some of our new players (or old players!) are failing to cut the mustard, or b) we have long term injuries leaving us short.

Definitely a new GK.

To my mind, the GK and the 5 are the most integral parts of the way in which KMc tries to play football.

Palmer hasn't convinced me that he is particularly adept at our style of play, and I certainly don't think he is a PL keeper.

With the importance of the GK/5 partnership, it's important to get it settled and working sooner rather than later, as opposed to replacing Palmer with a PL-level keeper only once we've been promoted.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I'm still a bit nervous about striker, LB and Matusiwa cover – fairly inconceivable that at some point we won't have an issue in at least one of these areas. But by January the picture should be somewhat clearer.

It would be a joy to take Sargent from Norwich. Not going to happen, mind.

It will be a case of seeing what's gelled, and what hasn't, what injuries we then have, and who maybe hasn't been performing. We'll know a lot more in a couple of months.

I think January is easy to write:

outgoing (predictions)
H.Clarke (loan)
Baggot (loan)
Humphries (loan)
Johnson (perm) - doubt he will want to be playing 2nd/3rd choice to Young and Furlong

Incoming
A new LB (leaving Young and Furlong for RB)
A new CB (more experienced than baggot)
A new CDM (cover for Azor)
4th signing - dependent on injuries (bit of a wildcard)

I don't see the point in loaning Clarke. He's not going to play for us again barring a horrific list of injuries. He is 4th choice RB now and not PL standard.

I've assumed Young is only here for 1 season, so if Furlong continues his impressive start, Young is plenty of cover on the RB and LB with Johnson staying too. Means we don't need a LB cover too.

With Clarke, I agree, may as well sell him but we would need a club to be willing to pay a fee for him and I can imagine we would want at least what we paid for him so I just think a loan it’s the most likely outcome all things considered.

Johnson - by the sounds of it, it was getting alluded to by EADT that Johnson may of been on his way so it just wouldn’t surprise me if he was to leave in January especially if Furlong stays ahead of him. I very much doubt he sees himself as a 2nd choice RB.
