The poll in question is a few days old but it makes for interesting reading - support for the royal family seems to be declining. I’m not expecting the country to become a republic within the next ten years (actually can’t see it happening within the next fifty years) but once the older generation dies out support for that particular institution might well fall sharply.

I would limit the royal family and tax all of their assets like a non-royal. I would also like to see their finances being accountable to the last penny. But for privacy I would allow a personal allowance of £150k which is theirs. | | | |

Everything else goes back to state control and the profits ploughed back into public service. No need to kill them. Or if they refuse, they can be repatriated to Germany or wherever.

And the huge number of engagements royals take on (nb including the individuals in their 70s, at which age most of us are retired) means that private car transport just wouldn’t be fast enough; might also have just as high a carbon footprint & cost, given that a security detail of several more cars would probably be needed to accompany him. I'd argue about 'huge number of engagements'. Hardly a junior doctor working 60+ hour weeks. Plus the age thing is self protection, if they started to retire at 60 another bit of the mystique would be eroded and they'd seem more like us, therefore pointless.
That's the irony, they need reform, but the more reform they have the more like us they are and it's just a few posh people working less than us, waving and having a lovely life in our castles and palaces with money that could be elsewhere.
The only thing I'll give the royals is the soft power thing, but IMO that doesn't make up for adding to class warfare in this country, and all the other multiple reasons against them. |  | | |

The soft power point is really important and the damage done to the country post brexit vote on the global stage is both intangible but very large and very real. You only need to look at the lack of foreign investment in the country since 2016.
To my mind, we had three sources of soft power that enabled us to play a somewhat outsized role on the global stage post WW2:
1) The Queen
2) Political stability
3) America's eyes and ears inside the EU
All now gone. I think to do away with the Royal family now would be detrimental albeit I'm in favour of a shrunken and more financially transparent structure. | | | |

It’s a little false equivalence though, nipping to Tesco in a 1.1l. He could have a convoy of 35 cars for his security and it would still have a lower carbon footprint than a helicopter. Actions speak louder than words and he hasn’t rescinded the ban on green energy infrastructure on the Royal property portfolio…
I do agree the soft power to an extent. BUT you have to bear in mind the toxic receptions the Royals have received in some of their former colonies, so it’s mixed at best. I do realise that they are still widely popular and my view is probably a minority one so I don’t think the Royals need worry yet. | | | |
