The Kuwait league was such a low standard, if he wants to live in a Muslim country and play at a decent standard he can only really be looking at

Turkey [to an extent] in Europe
Saudi, UAE or Qatar in Asia [but Saudi a long way ahead]
Egypt, Morocco or Algeria in Africa

He knew what he was signing up for.

I wonder if his wife wanted the move more than he did?

I thought we should have kept him here in the summer but the moment has passed for him here now unfortunately. He's not going to come in as a squad player and his presence would undermine O'Shea.

Indeed. Even on the coaching front, it would depend how well he could adapt to the change of what he would be doing and also the position in relation to his former teammates. Not necessarily an easy transition at a club where he was a player before (but by no means impossible, either).

We can't, in any case, take him as a player until January and I wouldn't want to cast aside Matusiwa and the progress he's made so far (for a man in his mid thirties). Especially as CM is not at the root of any issues we've had this season.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Yep, this is the unfortunate reality.

Reading between the lines, Morsy was sent off in a recent behind-closed-doors friendly as well as this recent league game. Sounds like the club weren't impressed with his ill-discipline. Some of their fans have also said they didn't need a ball-winner in midfield as their team was already so dominant in their league.

Strange move all-round, sadly.

Perhaps football in Kuwait is reffed more strictly in regard to tackling and borderline fouls, which are an essential part of the English game? That would severly cut across Morsy's style and skillset.

The Club doesn't want him here. Reading between the lines, my view is that he was seen as a serious reputational risk.

His stance on rainbow laces was already problematic, and I can imagine that his outspokenness on Gaza also wasn't viewed in the best possible light by the ownership group.

There's a reason he was allowed to go on a free.

If true, then weird. But then there have been some high profile players who’ve gone there and regretted it. That League’s got a bit of a reputation for overselling itself and over-promising.

I’m sure the money was a factor in tempting him, but personally I’d have stayed put here. You can’t buy what he had here.

Surely you cannot make that judgement when you don't know the figures involved .

Surely he hasn't brought the game into disrepute with his discipline lol, and if he has then can only think it would have been intentional because he wants out.

Summer talk was of him moving to make his millions, some confusion around why we didn't demand a fee when so much wealth is sloshing around there. Now he must be earning handsomely to have gone, must be, but the league itself doesn't appear to share any financial similarities with the Saudi Pro.

The league's chief sponsor awards £1200 to the best player for from each round of fixtures, £24K to the league's player of the season. The most Morsy's club appears to have paid on a transfer fee is just north of £1m; I believe they're considered the biggest club in the country. Indeed Morsy is the only player I know in the competition, seems to be the only European player over there, and the competition receives so little international coverage that I'm unable to find a website which publishes something as basic as lineup information - only know he's been playing because of the red card stat!

Yes, can't join another club until the transfer window.

Could he come back as a trainee coach to do his badges and sign a pre contract agreement ?

Stinks if he ends up back over here and we didn’t get a fee.

It already stinks that we didn't get a fee.

Totally unprecedented to let a captain go who's under contract, when you want to keep him, and not even ask for a fee. This club's never done that before, and I can't think of one which has.

Either there's more to it, or this was the icing on the cake of a number of seriously questionable transfer decisions.

And let's not pretend that he was past it. Fans were ready to accept the idea that it was time for him to move on as he's getting on a bit, but they salivated at Cajuste, who won fewer points per game than Morsy in the premier league. More than good enough for a bang average mid-table championship side. Which is what we are right now.

Imagine if he ended up at Norwich 😳

This would be a truly horrible outcome, but you very much reap what you sow.

At least Norwich got a fee for Nunez...

I don't really see it as something likely. I think he wanted to move on as he saw that he wasn't going to start week in, week out going forward and I think the club were happy to allow him to go that being the case.

People might not be ready to accept this, and there are good reasons why we all love Sam still, but he doesn't get into our midfield now, barring a couple of injuries. Things are probably best left as they are. Unless KM feels he has something to offer coaching wise.

The spending power or spending inclination in that league appears so low that I think it's unsafe to assume Kuwait SC would have been prepared, able even, to both meet Morsy's wage demands and offer us a meaningful transfer fee.

If this club thinks it needs a midfielder in January I would be disappointed if Morsy was seen as an option. We want someone for now and the future hence why we wouldn't sign him imho.

Oh that's a shame. I thought that was a good move for him to see out his career there. At 34, he's going to find it a challenge to find a new club at a high level. Couldn't see him coming back to Town but who knows. It's a funny old game.

If he comes back to the UK, wouldnt surprise me if a Derby, Oxford come in for him.

I noticed on Instagram, the official club account rarely tagged Morsy in pictures he was in, presumably to avoid people seeing his Instagram stories regarding the war in Gaza.

The tax implications of coming back to the UK are huge on the money that he was supposedly on.

Weekly earnings £110,000 × 14 weeks in Kuwait ≈ £1,540,000 so could be looking at a tax bill of £693,000 if he spends 183 days or more in the UK up until April next year.

He will have probably earn't more than that with the termination as well.

As a free agent, he could agree to sign for a club ahead of January, certainly. I think there were a few reasons why the summer was the right time to part ways from both angles. I think it's probably difficult for a club captain to become bit-part player. I didn't get the impression the club made too much effort to keep him when he told them about the offer he had had. There was no new contract offer, which I would guess was what SM might have expected.

Might be wrong but that was the figure discussed on here at the time.

Regardless, the tax implications are the same. Even if he's on let's say 50k a week his tax bill would be just shy of 300k.

Much like Henderson. Believe he had to pay a similar sum when it didn't work for him in Saudi and he wanted to come back. I presume Sam will just stay in the Middle East.

According to various online links he could sign for anyone but could only be registered if they have a spare space. If no spare space he'd have to wait until jan to play. But he could for example sign for town tomorrow if he wanted to.
