A decent win made harder 16:54 - Sep 27 with 2387 views | Mullet | Thought we played really well at times, but that late goal was a reminder how sloppy and complacent we can get. Some of the times we have the ball away in the first half, combined with giving them a free header in stoppage time take a little shine off it for me. Was hoping we’d really put them to the sword when we scored early as some of our play was superb. Maybe I’m nitpicking, maybe I’m entitled but I’d hope we shit teams out all season and not risk dropping points in future weeks. Shut obviously…. [Post edited 27 Sep 17:05]

A decent win made harder on 18:02 - Sep 27 by LeoMuff | We have a squad worth £150m with multiple players over £10m we absolutely should be in control at home against Portsmouth for 95% of the match not 60% |
Doesn't matter what the value of squad is. No side is going to be in full control of a whole match. A majority yes which I felt we did. I think tbh pompy having a few shots has made some feel we didn't control enough of the game which imo we did and if we needed to I think there were more gears for us to have used.

Manchester City controlled all of the game against us back in January...

In terms of the scoreline yes but we were not in control as in being the dominant team. Pompey had some good spells in both halves, luckily for us like Sheff U they are not very good in either box. That said great to get another win, build the confidence but we need a result on Tuesday now to keep the momentum ticking on. A lot better is to come I am sure, we need more from the 10 position and Hirst although he has scored a few goals and his effort is good doesn't seem quite at it.

A decent win made harder on 18:12 - Sep 27 with 506 views | _clive_baker_ | I don’t think the scoreline fairly reflected our general dominance. Hirst missed a good chance, Szmodics too. Could’ve been 3 to the good at half time quite easily. 2nd half was a bit sloppy, but a well deserved 3 points and the first back to back league wins since promotion day against Huddersfield. I think there’s loads more to come from us, really need to build on this now and put a nice little run together.

And yet we still had 8 shots and 4 corners. We were absolutely thrashed. But there were still times in the game we had our moments. Just like pompy had their moments today We had more of our own today ontop of the goals too. Azon post Hirst miss Szmodics miss Philogene 2 x wide Oshea header Egeli deflection over Kipre header ( poor attempt tho) Cajuste effort Etc Personally I never felt pompy were going to score. Didn't worry when they had the ball so it was annoying they got the set piece goal. But I felt completely comfortable today. [Post edited 27 Sep 18:18]

Thing is we are controlling the game without doing what the top sides do, stamping on their throat, Hirst missed an almost sitter first half with terrible contact and Szmodics should have scored as well. Go in 3 or 4 up is the ideal situation. They offered nothing. However, it’s better to be talking like this after a win. When it fully clicks we will be very dangerous.

Of course it does, we have players of premier league value and with premier aspirations, we have quality pompey can only dream of. If a premier league team played at home against Pompey they would have complete control, that is where we should be and aspire to.

A decent win made harder on 17:05 - Sep 27 by StokieBlue | I think that's very harsh. We controlled the first half, CM looked great as did the left side. Kipre and O'Shea were good. It's definite progress towards a more McKennaball team, don't think the negativity is that warranted given it's clearly a work in progress. SB |
I think the thing is that most players are playing pretty well, some very well, but that the interplay isn't always as slick and intuitive as we're used to, and consequently team confidence is just a little low - not overall confidence, but the confidence that makes those instinctive patterns of play really work. It makes us look clunky for chunks of games. The exciting thing for me is that it's very obviously coming between Leif and Jaden, and between Matu and Cajuste. At times you can see that we can be a better team than the last promotion team, but at times we look worse - whereas the promotion team was super-consistent and well-drilled. It shows the most up front where the lack of team understanding we had from Chappers and Omari and to some extent Broadhead means we're not as linked up as we need to be. This makes Hirst look isolated and awkward at times, but it's far from all down to him. The biggest thing for me though is that, Delap and Hutchinson aside, we have a better set of players than we had in the Prem, and I absolutely trust KMc above any other manager to knit them into a fluid and better version of what we were used to. I've seen nothing from the rest of the division to worry me at all.

i would say pompey only had one moment from open play. that was when hurst lost the ball in the centre circle and one ball through and Yang Min-Hyeok was through clear on goal , but walton saved the day. i never thought pompey looked like scoring until that late corner.

Swap Walton for Palmer, and I agree fully with this.

It was when they brought Pack on and he played deeper, between the CBs - I thought he made quite a big difference for them. As you say, once we brought our subs on things got better for us, but that tactical change had us scratching our heads for a while

Actually value doesn’t come into it in that way as far as I’m concerned. They are human beings, some comfortable, others less so early in their ITFC careers. Some in form, some not. My read was that especially first half, they totally outplayed Portsmouth. Started well, great goal, looked like another in the offing. A couple of silly give aways and the momentum dropped a little. But Portsmouth, despite being at it along with a ref favouring them, never looked like getting close and Palmer didn’t have a lot to do bar a good stop after a cheap loss of possession. Then we broke and scored again. Lovely goal. Nearly repeated it a minute later. I hoped we would go on and get that third to kill it. Portsmouth pressed hard, but individually and collectively the final score flattered them. When these players realise just how much better they are than most of the opposition, they’ll start ripping teams apart. They still look a tad ‘unsure’ at times and fragile from a confidence perspective. Overall, the potential of this team is much higher than the 2023/24 side. They are not complete team yet by any means and in that Mick Mills was right about forming partnerships. But for me, we are getting stronger and in many ways this was a more encouraging performance than Sheffield Utd.

With Colby Bishop on the pitch I always felt they could score. Marlon Pack always offers a goal threat so it was good he only came on towards the end. Palmer had to make a smart stop after we gifted them possession and they should have scored in the first half. They also got in behind us a couple of times but their final ball was woeful whereas a better one should have seen them score. They took a speculative shot from distance when we gave the ball away and Palmer was a long way from home. Had that been on target it might have troubled him. Overall we gave the ball away far too easily and, even though they were poor, they threatened at times when we did.
