Cov showing the way forward 14:19 - Oct 4 with 3873 views | nrb1985 | Coventry basically showing that our pragmatic approach is probably not the way forward in my opinion. For whatever reason we are playing incredibly passively this season in a low block, despite an embarrassment of riches in terms of playing staff and resources. This is particularly frustrating given nobody other than Cov appear to be playing on the front foot this season. So many draws, nobody other than Boro putting down much of a marker. I do wonder how much better off we'd be points wise had we actually come out of the blocks looking to attack teams and assert some pressure from the off. The three away games have been a really tough watch so far. Just so frustrating to watch us not press home our advantage so far. Hopefully we can put that right starting tomorrow. But in a very worst case scenario, Cov could be out of sight by the time we decide we want to play on said front foot. [Post edited 4 Oct 14:22]

We have 7 from 9 in our last 3 games, on course for 107 pts this season, if you want to live in the present

Cov showing the way forward on 16:02 - Oct 4 with 725 views | StokieBlue | Some clear missing context here though. Teams try and beat Coventry and leave a lot more space than they do against us where they play on a break with a massed low block and are happy with a point. Let's see what Coventry are like when that starts for them. Certainly started incredibly impressively though. SB

Cov showing the way forward on 15:53 - Oct 4 by PhilTWTD | Me neither, we've taken the game to everyone we've played. We had 64 per cent possession away against a team in the top four on Tuesday, which illustrates the point. |
I’m travelling at the moment so didn’t see Tuesday’s game as I’m in the wrong time zone. But at a guess and from what I’ve seen so far, a lot of that possession would be because the opposition have simply sat off as opposed to us playing high up the pitch and with intensity. For example, other than against Sheff Utd, can you remember Matusiwa winning the ball back high up the pitch in the opponents half?

We're currently 5th for PPDA which is generally the best measure of pressing intensity. From that we're not getting many high turnovers, possibly because as we press teams are tending to go longer, quicker to reduce the risk. We currently have the highest % of high turnovers ending in a shot in the league so when it does happen we're taking advantage. I think to your earlier point it's more around turning up the intensity when we are in possession rather than necessarily how high up the pitch we are. Still lots of quite slow triangles, rather than players making decisive runs/passes. There have been some signs of this changing - e.g we saw a few in the Pompey game. It's an area we will continue to progress as the connections develop I think. Overall I don't think our approach away from home is that dissimilar to the Championship promotion season - keep it tight in the first half and don't over commit, and then build pressure in the second half. Game state obviously changes that e.g. if we conceded first.

Cov showing the way forward on 15:47 - Oct 4 by nrb1985 | Have to disagree - I said something similar in another thread and quite a lot of people agreed. Most of which weren’t the usual boo boys either. So at the very least we can say, some reasonably well informed people and myself, don’t think the way I’ve characterized our play to date as “way off”. |
We haven't set up in a low block this season, about the only game we have set up in a more compact shape was Birmingham. Arguably our attacking play is too slow, but nothing about how we set up is a 'low block'.

A low block would be us sitting back and frustrating the opposition, which hasn't happened in any game, other than perhaps the opening 20 minutes or so against Birmingham, as Dubtractor says. If anything we leave ourselves too open and too vulnerable to breaks by keeping a high line.

I think the OP is possibly making a valid point about the intensity of our attacking play, but misunderstanding what a low block is.

You might as well reference our UEFA Cup, League Title, and FA Cup. They’re as relevant to this group! Let’s ignore the last 44 games then and celebrate second place to a seriously poor Plymouth side, with three times their resources, from the lowest position in the clubs history. McKenna deserves huge credit for 23/24 and maybe the leadership group he threw under the bus to save himself, deserve even more, but it’s gone. We’re now a manager and CEO that spent £200 million, have barely won a game in over 14 months and 44 attempts, and are really struggling against side costing TEN TIMES less. Not conjecture. Not opinion. Not designed as an attack of the ego you attached to those employees, who agreed to leave us TWICE .., just measurable facts! Apologies if you don’t think results matter at all .., in which case performances are equally drab. Keep digging. Keep up the nodding dog routine Our club IS bigger than your ego!

So you, as a town fan, think our incredible history means “diddly squat”? Odd. I am very proud of a club of our size doing what we did, albeit many, many years ago. It’s one of the things that makes me incredibly proud of who we are. We have a history so many so called bigger clubs would kill for. Nice to know you don’t care about that.

Cov showing the way forward on 19:09 - Oct 4 with 298 views | jas0999 | It’s not the home form which worries me … actually, last two games we look decent and hopefully a further three points tomorrow. Should be. We have looked below average away from home though … two penalties only … Coventry, have more than us away in regard to attacking intent. I’m sure it will come, but at the moment the away form hasn’t been good.
Cov showing the way forward on 19:11 - Oct 4 with 301 views | Chrisd | Coventry scoring for fun and their GD is ridiculous already +20!! Us in comparison look a side playing with the handbrake on and this slow labouring passing isn’t going to pull sides out of shape or entice them out of a low block. We certainly need to get the opposition keeper working more, get more shots off these halves we play when we don’t have a shot on target but have a high % of possession isn’t going to win you games.

So is it McKenna out for you? I presume so. I also presume you view the present is a draw last week and maybe this season to date. In which case, out with the crayons and get that ‘get out’ placard started. Coventry have a relatively settled side and have started really well. They’re going to be a force. Congrats them - they may go the distance. But who cares? It’s October. Season starts now and it’s about what we do. We do not have a settled side at the moment. It’s still forming. We have some seriously good players for this level and if the bedsheeters can hold fire for a little bit, even they might well see a really powerful side for this level emerge. McKenna knows how he wants them to play and at the moment it’s a bit of a mirror of how it was in his first half season in 2021/22. The value of the past is in that it can signpost for the future.
