Jon Nolan 19:17 - Oct 16 with 4504 views | townblue | After reading the story about toto I looked up Nolan to see how he got on after joining as part of the same deal. According to Wikipedia, it looks like he's only played 14 games after leaving us. Crazy.

Trying to rank Paul Taylor, Jay Emmanuel Thomas and Frank Nouble in order of who is the worst signing is like that gif of the three versions of Spidermen from different multiverses pointing at each other. The Evans era was so bad, it can't be described via Newtonian Mechanics. Only a quantum model with both/and paradoxes can come close to representing it.
Jon Nolan on 05:13 - Oct 17 with 769 views | Churchman | I watched Nolan playing a couple of games on tv for Shrewsbury and thought he looked a decent box to box goal scoring midfielder. Busy and aggressive I thought at the time ‘what’s not to like?’ Answer: just about everything. He wasn’t very good and was well short of Championship standard. In fact he wasn’t much good in League One either. It might have been that he was a poor fit for the club. Maybe because Hurst was out of his depth, windbag Lambert was Lambert, fitness issues, who knows. Nsala wasn’t great either. Looking at his career he was a real lower league journeyman In the context of the time, they were two poor signings at a time of the club’s lowest ebb under Evans. [Post edited 17 Oct 7:36]

I think it was partly the mental side he couldn't do because he was technically decent, used both feet and got around the pitch well. It was a really disappointing return against his talent let alone what he cost. At least some good moments in a season of dross from him, the goal at West Brom was on one of a handful of bright days. Did ok after relegation but never consistently.

Jon Nolan on 19:52 - Oct 16 by Nthsuffolkblue | How much did Sam Parkin cost? Before you get to the likes of JET or Tom Adeyemi. |
Adeyemi played like 3 games for us and he was MOTM in almost all of them. He was just made of biscuits. That season MM was desperate to put out a midfield 3 of Skuse Huws and Adeyemi but 2 of the 3 could barely get out on the pitch.

Nolan always seemed to be either injured or coming back from injury, never had a run of games to get any rythm or confidence. I thought he was a decent little player, read the game well, eye for a goal, but Championship in a struggling team was a step too high. Poor man's Norris and that's not a very high bar. His last injury absolutely did him in.

Jon Nolan on 20:42 - Oct 16 by Swansea_Blue | It was superb. Made him look like a cross between Shearer and Marcus Stewart. And then we found out he couldn’t score away (or home, I can’t remember which as I’m trying to purge those years from my brain). |
We signed Nicky Forster who was older and probably nearer the end of his career same season and I remember going to a game early on that year watching this old guy hobble around and do nothing and saying Forster looked well passed it. It was Sam Parkin. Forster looked half his age

Jon Nolan on 09:41 - Oct 17 with 619 views | patrickswell | I could never get over the fact that he looked frightened out there. He really played like he didn’t want to be noticed. He also played one of the most brainless passes I’ve ever seen to put us a goal down at QPR on Boxing Day 2018.

Jon Nolan on 19:43 - Oct 16 by jasondozzell | Remember Paul Taylor at a train station with a subway after being sent home from away trip? Also vaguely the dentist thing. Bloody hell. Millions of quid for all that. |
The station with a Subway and the dentist thing are two halves of the same story. He was sent home from a match and the reason given was that he needed emergency dental work. But he was photographed that afternoon at a station eating a great big chewy sandwich. I guess the most generous interpretation was that the club was trying to protect the player and keep any disciplinary matters private, but that the player was incapable of protecting the player. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Well remembered! I just remember the picture of him with said sandwich! Was a northern away game I think. Blimey - what a time that was.

I was once having a pub lunchtime meeting and was introduced as an Ipswich fan to a colleague's friend who was with us... "oh you must know Sam Parkin then?" "Sam Parkin-boo..." "Pardon?" "Sam Parkin-boo... that's his full name in Ipswich" "I'm his sister" Drink up pint and make an excuse to head back to the office. Lesson learned

And to think George Boyd was in the building and travelled down from Posh with Taylor. He didn’t sign because ME wanted to put a crazy release clause of £10m in his contract. Boyd went on to have a very decent career.

Spot on with the dentist but but it wasn’t disciplinary action that saw him omitted and sent home, it was because we signed Paul Green on loan the morning of the game (with Green being added included immediately) There is a rather gullible regular poster on here who was a big fan of Taylor and recall getting into an unsurprisingly long discussion on here with them where they continued to swear blind that he really did have toothache and there was no reason to think otherwise

He was hardly a world beater but Nouble isn’t anywhere near the worst signings we had during the Evans era - could actually make a pretty good argument he was a relatively successful one for the fee paid [Post edited 17 Oct 14:51]

The Ipswich court system certainly remembers Paul Taylor
Jon Nolan on 20:45 - Oct 17 with 150 views | patrickswell | I was at the Crawley league cup tie which ended up being the final Town game for both Taylor and Nouble. As I remember, the Town fans actually sang “We want you to stay” to Taylor when he was substituted, even though he didn’t really do anything particularly brilliant. Nouble had a shocker, unfortunately. Nothing went right for him and you could hear the fans emotionally closing the door on him. [Post edited 17 Oct 20:50]

I mean technically I suppose he did just about score goals plural. But if your idea of a striker scoring 1-2 goals a season is the sign of anything other than a dreadful signing then scouting isn't for you. He was a really really limited footballer who was quite strong but didn't use it nearly enough. L1-L2 player absolute best.
