Also rants about the unfairness of parachute payments. [Post edited 31 Dec 2025 21:17]

His general point about parachutes is broadly correct; they do distort the championship, BUT they are necessary because of the absurd imbalance of finances in the prem. He’ll be more than happy to collect those cheques if/when they come his way.

For the last few years they’ve been able to pay £100 more (optional) and if they get promoted in that season the PL season ticket is totally free.

Eliminating parachute payments would be catastrophic without completely rebalancing the money distribution between the leagues. It would lead to either the gutting of any squad relegated from the PL, or a significant increase of relegated clubs getting into serious financial trouble.

They are in an incredible position, and I would argue he should be rallying the troops, not moaning about season ticket holders who couldn't make a weekday match at 6pm. As Mick McCarthy once said, it's not good to stand outside the tent and p*** in.

As a supporter, I don’t think it really gets much better…” Has a team thats not been in receipt of parachute payments never got promoted before then? Whilst i agree with the more general point on parachute payments, im struggling to see how it doesnt make the premier league a closed shop more if teams go up and dont hve a go at it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

tbh I'm obviously glad we've got them, but I'm fundamentally against Parachute Payments. My opinion on them hasn't changed now we've got them, but it's nicer to be the ones being unfairly helped. There should be a better way to spread the wealth of football throughout the pyramid, but this is the best way as long as the Premier League teams are unwilling to share.

So they have crowd-funded their way to buying promotion!

He is of course correct, as are you. The Prem cause the imbalance in football due to their hoarding of the vast majority of the wealth. Or frittering it away on poor signings. Either way, it’s the Prem who are causing much of the issues in the Championship and below.

I briefly watched some of the Swansea game and their seemed lots of empty seats for that match, I said to my son top of the league and can’t fill the stadium that’s not a good sign if they win promotion and can’t win a few games early on. As for the fans leaving early against us well that was really embarrassing. Realistically they’ve had a great first half of the season but in 2 games against us I didn’t see a lot of Premiership quality. Even their long throws were pretty poor in the second game and Mason-Clarke who looked a decent player at Portman Road was completely ineffective along with Simms and Wright. I really hope we don’t end up playing them in the play offs I’ve had enough of their fans always blaming the ref, parachute payments and injuries in their small squad.
| Cov owner having a dig at their fans for leaving early on 08:27 - Jan 1 with 1074 views | Dubtractor | Have to say, I was somewhat stunned to see them leave in huge numbers when we got the second, given that there was at least 10 minutes left and considering the season they have had. a) Anything can happen in 10 minutes of football, even if it seemed improbable. b) As a fan you'd surely want to clap your team off, show some support etc, after the year they have had. Finish the calendar year miles clear at the top, and no one can be bothered to show appreciation. Can't imagine the players felt especially well loved at the final whistle. | |

An extra 3000 in the crowd would make a significant difference though wouldn’t it. And the season ticket holders do get an incentive to exchange with whatever the voucher is. He’s right, it’s lazy and selfish to just let the seat go to waste.

They didn’t look great against Swansea either. On recent showing, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them drop out of the top 2. But then people were saying the same about us in 23/24 and they could rally again.
