maybe something to do with him being a private schoolboy, which is atypical for a footballer?

And people wrongly claiming him to be of the JCB Bamford family I suspect.

His goal against Wrexham was unbelievable finishing ability.

At this level, when fit, he scores goals - about as good a goalscorer as you'll find at this level.

Of course fitness is the question mark against him, can we take that risk currently, I don't know.

Whoa. Let's not get over enthusiastic. "who would be capable of playing in the PL too"

He's certainly not that.

@Chelts
Do you not think he has that ability? He is a classy footballer who can score outstanding goals, the question marks have been more around him sustaining it over a significant period of time. He is a bit lightweight, but tbh, I can't think of anyone currently 'gettable', without spending £20m, that would be of higher quality in the striker role for us. Would be a starter ahead of Hirst ... if fit.

What about John Wilson? He knew how to get them in the net.

I watched Wilson against Wolves and I know it wasn't exactly a stellar performance from any Wet Spam players but he looked awful

Slow , heavy , lethargic , uninterested

On a free transfer and plenty of room in the squad how much of a risk is it really? Obviously will be on a decent whack but on an 18 month deal I don't really see too much risk.

There are loads. It might be atypical but its not all that uncommon at all, especially for highly thought of players in top academies as paying school fees is often a hook to get them in, or players with footballer parents who aren't short of cash.

Foden, Bellingham, Lampard all did. ITFC wise Nick Pope, Mings, Norwood, various others all did.

Not necessarily a bad move. He won't be playing full 90 mins.
Back up for Hirst, or cameo roles. Short term deal. I'm sure we are in a position to offer him more wages than Sheff Utd.

I don’t know why since I don’t know the bloke, but there’s something about him I’ve always detested. Unfair? Probably.

I’m with you on this. Just said the same on the news page about him. Something I can’t put my finger on, but I don’t like the guy, never have.

....and it's a big if, then maybe KM thinks Bamford would be ahead of Hirst.

Is he a better finisher?

Possibly.

Who knows the ins and outs of KM's magical mind?

Why? We're 3rd in the league, I think we'd be fine for the rest of this season at least with Hirst/Bamford/Azon

Will come down to salary, and contract length, what our cap on that would be, what other teams are willing to offer.

I think really you would need better in the PL, so would we want to offer more than a 6 month deal. It's unlikely he would accept just 6 months.

There are moving pieces for this deal, don't think it would be straight forward, would imagine multiple clubs will be competing for him.

There will certainly be competition for him, not least Sheff United where he's doing well but no doubt elsewhere too. If we want him I would think we'll be able to put a decent package his way though, especially in the absence of a transfer fee.

He's not going to be one to lead the line in the premier league but we need a bit of experience and know how. Ultimately if he plays his part in getting us there over the next few months then having another year on his deal is a pretty minor issue in the grand scheme of things and with PL money. We either rate him enough that he sticks around as a bit part, or he's loaned back to the Champ where there would no doubt be interest.

Not a prolific goalscorer and personally not that keen on him. I think we could do better. But anyone we bring in will be a risk. Besides Bamford is 32 so not a long term proposition. Even to give him a two year contract when players like Morsy and Burgess weren't given one seems absurd.

Well he certainly isn't going to play the Hirst role. That involves closing down defenders, which naturally means lots of running, one thing Bamford doesnt do now is run around a lot.

Sheffield United have just posted about beating us in the FA Cup in 2018. Think it may be a cryptic dig at our interest in him. Journos up there reckon Bamford has agreed to stay with them

Whilst I appreciate January is a tricky month to do deals, I have to say - like I mentioned on another thread the other day - that if 12 months worth of Prem money is scouting you Patrick Bamford, I genuinely think something is wrong within the club.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…
