If O’Shea or Kipre punt it forward and it goes out of play, or the winger or striker mis times their jumps for headers, they get absolute pelters. Where’s the midfield? Who has the b0ll0x to go in and get the ball off one of them and make something happen? I’ve had a season ticket for 18 years, been watching us for 25 years and Cajuste has to be the most over rated player I have ever come across. The bloke does absolutely nothing. Hopefully, and a very big hopefully, Dan Neil has something about him and get us going in the middle of the park because whilst it’s crucial we get a centre forward in on Monday, we are abysmal in centre mid.

We need a much better Plan B for getting up the pitch when it's evident that the opposition are happy to sit back.

That midfield is terrible . Cajuste is just a passenger most of the time. I hope Neil is the answer but what we need is some real physical guys in the middle who can mix it up. Both Neil and Anis don’t look that type yet again. Kieran always seems to prefer the lightweights, they are never going to boss a physical game. As for striker Ashton and McKenna need to go hide this week if we don’t get one in,because there are going to be some very disgruntled supporters. It’s not like we haven’t wanted one in blo0dy ages after all!

Is this where we miss Morsy? - ie having someone to pick the ball off the defence and carry it into midfield. Furlong seemed not to want to pass it to Burns today.

Teams just sit off us, put everyone behind the ball whilst we knock it about the back. Then it's just shear arrogance defending like we do, on the half way line, getting turned and them being through one on one

It's not the CM It's the directive Looked into a while back, oshea is this season what Morsy was in the promo season Oshea is the ball carrier and sprays the ball round as much as morsy did, he also creates a large number of attacking phases with his cross balls to clarke, davis etc. We didn't imo have an issue getting the ball up the pitch. Our issue was we got up the pitch but then passed is sideways across their box. We dont imo get enough balls into the box to cause mayhem and we don't draw enough runners from their defensive lines when they sit in a low block. We are far far to pedestrian in the final third. Having a different CM coming to get a ball from the cb today wouldnt have effected anything

Exactly. Again today Preston not interested in pressing, completely denying any space to work through, in or wide. Easy to say 'move the ball quicker' or go in behind but to what?

Cajuste marked out of the game today. Preston's work off the ball denied us any space. Those dropping deep were tracked as were those going in behind.

A guy behind me in the West today was going apoplectic that we weren't getting the ball forward quicker - and then Johnson (I think) pumped it forward aimlessly and it went straight to their players - at which point he started screaming about holding onto the ball more. Sometimes I despair more at our fans than our players.

It feels like there must be a middle way, though? The opposition get the ball up-field, commit a few men forward, and the ball then ends up with Walton. All that is achieved by giving the ball to Dara, who proceeds to fail to encourage a press, is that the opposition can reset and 'solidify'. Those particular circumstances feel as if they call for us to attempt some bold counter-attacking football.

We have to be more willing to gamble with a pass through the low block, instead of playing horseshoe of doom with an oppo keeping us at arms length. We don’t make the defenders work against a player on possession, holding shape is simple in comparison

Giving teams time to get back in shape is the frustrating thing for me. Our champagne goals in 23/24 were all when we moved the ball forward with pace and were fairly direct, with maybe only 3 passes from Hladky to the goal. That rarely seems to happen now - we’re much more formulaic and controlled (or slow and predictable if you prefer).

Complete nonsense. Morsy was able to drive with the ball which meant that he himself could be a threat, so teams couldn’t just stand off and let him have it - which is exactly what they do to O’Shea because he can’t

We're not asking oshea to be morsy, driving forwards with the ball into the oponents half, we're asking our cb to slowly bring the ball out and provide varying aspects of ball distribution, some are passes to kipre, some to furlong, some on the diag, some into the channel. We're not asking any midfielder to be a morsy Ohsea, and the backline are doing absolutely what is being requested of them with the ball. It also worked extremely well. we were constantly getting the ball around the preston box. So no it's not nonsense.
