The technology isn't accurate enough to disallow goals on such fine margins. They dont know exactly when the ball left the guys boot, so cant possible rule that goal off conclusively. Its a nonsense. For the record, I NEVER wanted VAR. [Post edited 10 Feb 20:33]

Yeah but then you get the same problem when someone is a toenail offside

But at least the attacker has some form of advantage, like they are supposed to have. Off side was supposed to prevent goal hanging, not rule goals off by a millimetre.

Then its not a clear foot ahead. The heel needs to be ahead of the defender. Anything else is onside. Imo.

If there is a point that determines onside vs offside, then anything on the cusp will be examined closely. In your example, you just have VAR drawing the lines to determine if the heel was indeed in front of the defender (oh, and which part of the defender). Whilst you have VAR, it will always be scrutinised very closely, wherever you decide to draw the line as to what is offside.

Have it that there has to be clear daylight for it to be offside and, if there is no conclusive instant angle that shows it, the linesman's call is correct. Or better still, just do away with it entirely. That would change the game (for the better) hugely.

Football is about scoring goals so that shouldn't be the case. Surely it would be far better if, where part of the body is level then you are level and onside. Find a good reason to allow the goal. In Rugby Union, TMO shows the ref the evidence but the ref makes the judgement call. There is no blame or loss of face and the ref retains control of decisions.

So what happens if someone scores a header with the players head in an offside position but his feet are onside?

Not offside based on the rules id bring in. Only by the foot being beyond the defender could you be offside.

Which is fine if the head couldn’t be used to strike the ball. I know that this won’t be popular but I’ll keep it as it is or make offside calls the sole responsibility of the on-pitch officials. And simply accept that wrong decisions happen.

Your last option has to better than what it is now. I was for VAR until I saw how poor it is. I still think that scrapping it entirely is best. It is an impossible rule to get 100% right every time anyway (even with VAR which is still fallible because they aren't drawing lines from a photo taken in line with the players at the precise moment the ball is kicked anyway).

It's in the rules (or it used to be!) that level is onside however they will never give a "level" anymore, and that's what I'd bring back - anything which looks really close and you can't tell onside or offside without using technology you call it level - so it's onside.

This the real reason it was brought in. A reaction to Sky over analysing every decision and 'proving' decisions were wrong with the benefit of 8 slow motion replays and then Managers feeling hard done by and refs under extreme pressure. So now we have VAR and these kind of decisions.

Which moment of the assisting player kicking the ball is it based on? When the ball first comes into contact, or when it leaves the boot? There must be fractions of seconds that would make a difference when the offside call is as fine as this?

Exactly... and penalties weren't invented so they could award a penalty because a ball struck an arm from a harmless cross. But you can't un-invent technology. If a sensible ref let's a goal stand even though he's "offside" by a mm.... there'd be post-game analysis spending ages saying different and fans going apesh1t.

What is clear and obvious? Different to everybody. There'll still be arguments and the officials will steer for the safe option for the black and white rather than back themselves in the grey.
