It's not in my wheelhouse 13:40 - Feb 19 with 1704 viewsblue_curacao

I think these cliches go through phases where everyone in an organisation picks up on them and starts using them before fading from use and being replaced by the latest catch-phrases.

The latest expression I'm hearing a lot at work at the moment, which really grates with me is "it's not in my wheelhouse". Grrr, very irritating!

I don't think that's a new one.

I've heard people say 'choiceful' a lot lately. Appreciate its a word, but I've never heard it used so much in conversation as I have over the past couple of years.

"Buildout". As in "when we buildout product X". No one was saying it at my company in 2025. Now someone can't stop saying it in meetings in 2026. It's just Product Development, get over yourself.

The previous 3 years it was all 'pivots' and 'pipelines'.

'Anas Sarwar has said Sir Keir Starmer is "welcome to come and chap doors" during the Scottish election campaign - despite urging him to resign as prime minister.'

I've lived in Scotland for twelve and a half years, and get invites to go canvassing for Labour but I have never once heard anyone say 'chap on doors.' Sounds like a late night homoerotic dogging show...

I can recommend some light reading to help you cope with the modern workplace:

Had to shortURL it to get around the language controls, but it's an Amazon link with a fruity title.

I spent yesterday trying to bring back the spirit of 1980's Australian TV and spent the day telling people to 'Rack Off'

Peculiar looks from the U40 brigade. "Oh, just rack off will ya"

Everyone is 'finding levers to pull' in our office at the moment.
It's Higher Ed so these days, most of the levers have nothing on the end.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Younger people and data-type people at my workplace keep referring to things being in "buckets" rather than categories. No idea what that's all about but it does my head in

I think you need to peel the onion, unpack the problem with a deep dive and target the low hanging fruit assuming your ducks are all aligned.

Keep me in the loop.

I imagine they're using some sort of Jira or similar board. Columns = 'buckets'

I love the nonsense of 'its like peeling the layers of an onion'.

No it isn't, for a start, nobody peels the layers of an onion - unless they're producing those poncey single onion cups that chefs produce to hold 10ml of 'jus'. Secondly, peeling one would make you cry, is that the analogy want for the problem solving you're discussing?

It's nearly as silly as 'we've written some FAQ's'. Utter tripe; if you've written them, they aren't frequently asked!

Since COVID everything gets 'ramped up'. That one grinds my gears as much as someone saying grinds my gears.

I'm rather old-school.
If someone disagreed with me, I would most likely say 'fancy a bunch of fives, Daphne?'
They would get as far as 'whats a bu...?'.

It always comes across as so insincere in the workplace. You can spot people who’ve been on HR courses a mile off. One of our regular ones was people who’d been on ‘difficult conversations’ training.

“I’d like to see if we can reach a better understanding…”
“From what you’ve told me… [repeat what they’ve just said]”
“What would happen if you did nothing?”

I suppose it’s useful to people new to any sort of management or supervisor roles, but if you can’t work out how to speak to someone on your own I do wonder if you’re in the right job!
