The Reaction From Some Of Our Fans... 18:24 - Feb 21 with 7966 viewsBad_Boy_Mark

At full time was shameful and embarrassing.

Most of you don't know me from Adam; I'm just a regular Dad who takes my young Son home and away.

We have seen some great performances, some mediocre ones and some poor ones too.

Today was not great defensively and we were as disappointed as anyone to see us concede 3 further goals after being 3-2 up.

However, this does not excuse some of the vitriolic behaviour that we witnessed today.

We sat just above the tunnel and as the players came off the pitch, there were hundreds of fans booing, effing and jeffing at the players, dropping the C-bomb, and using the various finger gestures...even at McKenna.

He came over to appreciate the fans for their support and after witnessing the above, he soon disappeared up the tunnel.

Dara O'Shea came off the pitch holding his hands up in a 'sorry' style manner - he got nothing but heaps and heaps of abuse. I know he didn't have his best game, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to give him encouragement...

I understand that it's a passionate game and we as a fan base, were disappointed about the manner of defeat but for goodness sake, this type of reaction has to stop.

Get behind the boys, like the song says "follow the Town, up or down"

I don't care what others were saying on here, McKenna said as much, Joe Fairs said the same on Blue Monday. The cup game and yesterday were unrelated (other than they were both sh!t performances).

joe fairs is part of the coaching staff? be surprised if the club let an official coach go on a supporter podcast

you are right on the performances though

Where on earth have I suggested that? He's just someone whose opinion is respected by many.

But if you don't want his opinion, how about the manager's;

"A big priority... had to be getting minutes into players who needed it. It was clear with the schedule that we have and the games that we have to fit in that we're going to need the squad and we need players match fit and ready to go. We had to use tonight for that, to get some players ready..."

I was probably sat not far from you.

McKenna looked really peed off with the reaction, he came to applaud the fans and after receiving the abuse threw his hands down in a “sod it” gesture and went down the tunnel.

O’Shea held his hands up by way of apology and also got the same.

It’s one thing to be annoyed / disappointed at a result / performance etc, but the outright vicious abuse was well over the top.

If someone can’t handle losing football matches, maybe this isn’t a hobby for them. When you make the decision to spend money on a ticket, food and travel, we all know anything, good and bad can happen.

Think McKenna has done that a few times now this season, he looks and sounds thoroughly peed off to me these days.

Such a shame it’s going this way, one of the best young managers in the country who’s only going upwards when he leaves here and he’s being treated this way from a minority of the fan base.

Same at every club , we’re in a results business and if people are travelling hundreds of miles and spending fortunes supporting the team they expect results not a capitulation against Wrexham ffs

No, if people are spending time and money travelling to “support” the team, they are wrong to expect anything.
When you make that decision as a football fan, you know anything can happen, good or bad.

It's changed in the last decade. Fans will get the hump and show it but we lose a league game and you've got people screaming at KM to f off.

It used to be in football that you'd lose a game and that would be it. Now it's an inquest and performative rage.

'Performative rage' is exactly the phrase.

Morons. But reflecting the moronic condition of the modern human in the moronic modern human environment.

I know it's a cliche, but social media has really fked us up.

It’s depressing stuff, and sadly not unique to us. Humour, decency and patience seem in ever shorter supply these days. I don’t know why. A lot of people blame social media, but I can’t see how that’s the cause, and certainly not at games. All social media does is let people highlight to the world who they are. Why they’re rude and obnoxious arses in the first place is another question. Bad parenting? No role models? Thick as a Boxing Day turd? Who knows.

It lets people highlight to the world who they are, but it also modifies who they are by a process of ratcheting down behaviour by example and by standards erosion.

It's cancer.

Yup, certainly feels that way to me. I don’t think Ashton would make any knee jerk reaction on him at the end of the season, I think he’d keep him on, but I’m not sure McKenna will want to stick around. I can’t blame him either.

It wasn't "in order for the win yesterday", it was to give those other players minutes.

I saw it said that nobody cared much about the FA Cup it was all about the league this season.

Rest our besties they will come out of the traps all guns blazing that kind a thing for the league game.

In truth KM wasn’t worried about a cup run, neither were a lot of our fans.

What irritates me these days is these are obviously regular asay fans because it’s impossible to get an away ticket these days. Why bother, there are other fans willing to travel and pick the team up off the floor!

That’s the spirit!

Bristol Rovers away during our League One promotion year was pretty bad, wasn't it? Didn't Morsy confront the fans over it?

I'd forgotten about that but wasn't at that game.

There's really no excuse for abuse and its sad to hear about.

I guess for some its the frustration of spending ÂŁ100s to go to games to see a team paid ÂŁ1000s not perform. Not saying that makes abuse acceptable, far from it, but its the imbalance in the world and the state of affairs which in my view leads to this sort of thing happening. Its a slippery slope.

Yes, he must be thinking to himself, after all I've done for club and the position we are in, why has the crowd reaction after games this season often been either muted or hostile?

It's not even as though we've done as badly as Leicester or Southampton, and being a parachute club is never a guarantee of success.

If you’re going to shout targeted abuse it probably better to go to the pub or get the train when we are two down in injury time and have a good old moan in there instead.

Not really unique to ITFC though.

Indeed! I make no apologies for leaving when the 5th goal went in for that very reason.

Yep. I don't think some so called fans realise what they are doing this season means that we are more likely to lose him. He's been irritated by the lack of support and loyalty and I don't blame him. It's a tragedy - we've got one of the best young managers who has brought us so much joy and we're hounding him out when I'm with a great shout of another promotion.

Like I said, it wasn't about this game in isolation. It was giving minutes to players who need to be match fit because we might need some of them at various stages.

But yeah, he wasn't worried about a cup run and was treating it like a training game, which is a bit disrespectful to those who paid to go but I guess they probably should've known. And of course there's always the hope that they could get through anyway and thus give themselves more game time.

If mckenna is going to make it big as a head coach he's going to have to overcome more than little old Ipswich groans. Christ the higher he goes the worse the 'entitlement' gets. Look at west ham who hounded their manager out despite winning a cup!

Where have I remotely sounded angry? I said who Joe Fairs is on the previous post - of Blue Monday. And you seemed to know that Blue Monday is a podcast.

But you're deflecting, because that's not the context that's needed anyway. I've literally quoted the manager saying it as well.

I’m not even on SM and would agree that it gives a voice to the more niche amongst society.

However it seems a nonsense to paint the abuse and general hostile behaviour as being a modern thing given what football crowds were like in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Think people just try to over analyse stuff personally.
